E-commerceEtsy and handmade shops playbook

Get found inside Etsy search, then build traffic Etsy cannot take away

Etsy's own search box is where many sales start. This playbook shows how to tune titles, tags and attributes to what shoppers actually type; Outpost writes the off-Etsy articles on your own domain, so the shop does not depend on one algorithm.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Much Etsy discovery starts in Etsy's own search box, often with something specific and personal: "custom pet portrait", "dried flower resin coaster". Etsy matches listings using titles, tags, categories and attributes, then ranks them on relevance, listing quality, recency, shipping price and how complete the shop is. Outside Etsy, Pinterest and Google send shoppers straight to listing pages, and Etsy itself may advertise your listings on other sites through Offsite Ads.

The buying journey

A shopper searches, scans thumbnails, opens a few listings, checks reviews, shipping time and personalization options, and often favorites items before buying. Thumbnails and the first line of the title do most of the work. For custom work, a clear personalization box and realistic production time decide the sale.

What Etsy sellers aim for

  • Listings that appear for the specific phrases shoppers type, found in Etsy Search Analytics
  • Higher click-through on thumbnails and more favorites per view
  • Steady traffic from Pinterest and Google that is not dependent on Etsy's ranking
  • An email list or own-site option so repeat buyers have somewhere to go

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Etsy search (titles, tags, attributes)

    Essential

Etsy's matching uses titles, tags, categories and attributes, so filling every field with the phrases shoppers use is the single biggest free lever.

  2. Pinterest

    Essential

Handmade and gift ideas are planned on Pinterest, and Pins linking to listings keep sending traffic long after they are posted.

  3. Off-Etsy content and gift guides

    Medium

A simple blog or gift-guide page on your own domain can rank on Google for long-tail gift searches and send buyers to listings or your own store.

  4. Short process videos on Instagram and TikTok

    Medium

Seeing an item made sells handmade work. Process clips give people a reason to visit the shop and remember your name.

  5. Your own store and email list

    Supporting

Etsy owns the customer relationship. An own-site storefront plus an email list gives repeat buyers a channel that ranking changes cannot break.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

Read the data you already have

    • Export Etsy Search Analytics and list the search terms that bring views but few clicks, and the ones that convert
    • Pick the 15 listings with the most views and check each one fills every tag slot, attribute and category
    • Check shop completeness: banner, About section, policies, and shipping prices
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Rewrite the listings that matter

    • Lead each title with what the item is and who it is for, and put the shopper phrases in tags rather than repeating the title
    • Replace first photos that do not read at thumbnail size
    • Add a production partner to any listing made with a print provider or outside workshop
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Open a second front: Pinterest

    • Set up a Pinterest business account and claim your site or Etsy shop
    • Create boards by recipient and occasion, and pin your top listings with keyword-rich descriptions
    • Publish one off-Etsy gift guide on your own domain that links to the listings
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

Refresh, renew and plan the season

    • Renew or add a small batch of new listings each week to use the recency boost steadily
    • Decide whether Offsite Ads are worth it at your margin, and note whether you can still opt out
    • Set and publish holiday production cut-off dates on every personalized listing

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Cramming every keyword into the title

Etsy uses tags for matching too, and its search team has advised sellers to put keywords in tags rather than stuffing titles. A title that reads like a list hurts click-through even if it matches.

  2. Guessing instead of reading Search Analytics

Etsy shows which search terms bring views and sales. Sellers who rewrite listings from intuition often optimize for phrases nobody uses.

  3. Not declaring production partners

If a print provider or another workshop makes part of the item, Etsy expects a production partner on the listing. Skipping it is a policy risk that can put the shop in trouble.

  4. Being surprised by Offsite Ads fees

Etsy charges a fee on orders it attributes to its offsite ads: 15% for shops under $10,000 in yearly sales, who can opt out, and 12% once a shop passes that, when it becomes mandatory. Price your products with that in mind.

  5. Treating Etsy as the whole business

Ranking changes and fees are outside your control. A Pinterest presence and an email list are cheap insurance.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits your own shop site's titles, descriptions, structured data and broken links, and lists the fixes in priority order

  • Researches the search phrases buyers use for your products, for your titles and articles

  • Writes off-Etsy gift guides and seasonal pages on your own domain that link back to listings

  • Connects Search Console to your own domain and reports which guides earn impressions and clicks

  • Writes holiday articles, which you place on the Calendar ahead of your production cut-offs, and logs each publish with a receipt. Etsy listings stay with you

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What actually decides where my listing shows in Etsy search?

Etsy first checks whether a listing matches the search, using titles, tags, categories and attributes. It then ranks matches on relevance, listing quality based on shopper behavior, recency, shipping price for US sellers and shop completeness. Etsy changes the details regularly, so check its current Seller Handbook.

Should I use every tag?

Yes. Each tag is a chance to match a different shopper phrase. Use multi-word phrases people actually type, and avoid repeating the exact same words across every tag.

Are Etsy Offsite Ads worth it?

It depends on your margin. You pay nothing up front, but Etsy takes a share of orders it attributes to its ads within 30 days of a click, capped at $100 per order. Shops under $10,000 in yearly sales can opt out; above that it is mandatory at 12%.

Is Pinterest still worth the time for Etsy sellers?

For gift, decor, wedding and craft categories, usually yes. Pins keep working for months, and they send traffic to listings without Etsy taking an Offsite Ads fee, because that fee applies to Etsy's own ads.

Should I open my own website?

Not instead of Etsy, but alongside it once you have repeat buyers. Your own site gives you an email list, Google free listings and a place customers can return to. Many sellers keep Etsy for discovery and use their own site for repeat orders.

How fast will these changes work?

Listing edits are picked up by Etsy search fairly quickly, and new or renewed listings get a short, temporary recency boost. Pinterest and Google traffic build over months. Expect a steady climb, not a jump.

Can I use Outpost for this today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For an online store, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage your Etsy listings or Pinterest. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
