E-commerceDTC brands playbook

Grow a DTC brand before you can afford to rent attention

Shoppers compare on Google Shopping, read Reddit threads, watch creators and check reviews before they buy direct. Outpost builds the comparison and buying-guide pages that compound on your own site, so paid ads become an accelerator rather than a life-support system.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Discovery happens in a few places: product searches that surface free Google Shopping listings across Search, Images, YouTube and Lens; creator videos on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube; Reddit threads where people ask 'what's the best X that lasts'; gift guides; and Pinterest boards for visual categories. Before buying, shoppers usually search the brand name plus 'review' or 'vs', so what ranks for your own name matters as much as discovery.

The buying journey

See the product in a feed, a listing or a recommendation, search the brand, read reviews and comparisons, check price, shipping and returns, often leave, and come back through email, retargeting or a second recommendation. First orders tend to come from people who have met the brand more than once.

What DTC brands aim for

  • Products appearing in Google's free listings with clean, approved feeds
  • Owning page one for your brand name plus 'review', 'vs' and 'alternative'
  • A repeatable creator seeding program with proper disclosures
  • An email list that turns first orders into repeat orders

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Google Merchant Center free listings

    Essential

Free product listings can appear across Search, the Shopping tab, Images, YouTube and Lens. Only product detail pages qualify, and feed quality decides whether you match searches.

  2. Creator seeding

    Essential

Sending product to creators whose audience matches, with clear #ad or gifted disclosures, produces the videos shoppers trust and the content you can reuse. The FTC holds brands responsible for disclosure, too.

  3. Comparison and use-case content

    High

'[Brand] vs [competitor]', 'best X for small apartments', care guides and sizing pages catch shoppers in the research step and rank for years.

  4. Email and SMS you own

    High

Most first-time visitors don't buy. A welcome flow, back-in-stock alerts and post-purchase education are where organic traffic turns into revenue.

  5. Pinterest catalogs

    Medium

For home, fashion, food and gifting, Pinterest is a search engine for future purchases; catalogs turn your feed into shoppable pins for free.

  6. Reddit and niche communities (listen first)

    Medium

Threads asking for recommendations rank in Google and get cited by AI answers. Participate as yourself with disclosure, follow each subreddit's rules, and never astroturf.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

    • Mirror the feed to Microsoft Merchant Center and Pinterest catalogs
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Own your brand searches

    • Publish an honest comparison page against your closest competitor and a 'who it's for / not for' page

  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Creator seeding round one

    • Shortlist 20 small creators whose audience matches your buyer, not just your aesthetic
    • Send product with a written note on disclosure (gifted or paid) and no script
    • Set up an email welcome flow and a post-purchase care sequence
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Unqualified 'Made in USA' claims

The FTC's standard is 'all or virtually all' made in the US, and the Labeling Rule covers online marketing. Assembled-here-from-imported-parts needs a qualified claim.

  2. Creator posts without disclosure

Gifted and paid posts need clear disclosure, and brands share responsibility. Put the disclosure requirement in writing when you send product.

  3. Buying or gating reviews

The FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and paying for positive ones. Ask every customer the same way and show the critical reviews too.

  4. Launching paid ads on a broken feed

Disapproved products and thin product pages hurt free listings and paid Shopping alike. Fix the feed and pages first; it costs nothing.

  5. Training customers to wait for discounts

Constant sitewide codes make organic traffic less valuable, because visitors learn to leave and wait. Use education and bundles before discounts.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can a DTC brand grow without paid ads?

Yes, but slower and more compounding: free listings, comparison content, creators and email build a base that paid ads can later scale. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra ad spend.

Are Google Shopping listings really free?

Google offers free product listings through Merchant Center that can appear across Search, Shopping, Images, YouTube and Lens. Visibility depends on your feed data and product pages; being eligible doesn't guarantee impressions.

How long until organic content drives sales?

Free listings can start showing within days of an approved feed. Comparison and how-to pages usually take a few months to rank and keep paying off after that.

Do gifted creator posts need a disclosure?

Yes. Under the FTC's endorsement guidance, a free product is a material connection that should be disclosed, and brands can be held responsible for creators they work with.

Should we sell on Amazon too?

Many brands do, because shoppers research there. It's a separate channel with its own rules; this playbook focuses on demand you own.

Is Outpost available for ecommerce brands today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For a DTC brand, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage product feeds, marketplaces or creator deals. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
