CreatorsSelf-published authors playbook

Sell the next book to the readers who loved the last one

Indie books sell through Amazon's search and also-boughts, price promotions, reader newsletters and genre communities, and series do the compounding. Outpost covers your author site: reading-order guides and book articles that keep getting found, so each release lifts the backlist.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Readers find indie books mostly inside retailers: Amazon search, category bestseller lists, 'customers also bought' rows and Kindle Unlimited browsing. Outside Amazon, deal newsletters like BookBub, BookTok and Bookstagram, Goodreads shelves and genre Facebook groups and subreddits drive discovery. For fiction, the strongest channel is often the author's own newsletter, fed by a reader magnet and back-matter links.

The buying journey

Discover a cover in a list, feed or deal email, read the blurb and the first pages via Look Inside, check reviews and series length, buy or borrow, and if they like it, look for book two. Sell-through across a series is where most of the money is, so the end of each book is a marketing page.

What self-published authors aim for

  • A launch that reaches readers beyond friends and family
  • Ranking in the right Amazon categories and keyword searches
  • A newsletter of readers who buy each new release
  • Steady sell-through from book one to the rest of the series

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Amazon product page: keywords, categories, blurb, Look Inside

    Essential

Guides describe seven keyword slots and up to three category choices per format in KDP. Reader-language keyword phrases and the right subcategories put the book in front of people browsing your exact subgenre.

  2. Reader newsletter

    Essential

An email list you own sells every future release. A free reader magnet (a novella or prequel) linked in the back of each book and on your site fills it.

  3. Price promotions and deal newsletters

    High

BookBub Featured Deals require at least a 50% discount or a free book and are selective; smaller deal sites and Kindle Countdown or free days (with KDP Select) can spike visibility for book one of a series.

  4. Advance reader copies and reviews

    Medium

ARC services like NetGalley, BookSirens and Reedsy Discovery put early copies with reviewers. Amazon doesn't allow reviews from friends or family, so honest outside readers matter.

  5. BookTok, Bookstagram and genre communities

    Medium

Readers recommend by trope and vibe ('enemies to lovers', 'cozy fantasy'). Show the book in those terms, and in subreddits follow self-promotion rules closely.

  6. Goodreads Author Program

    Supporting

Free to join; claim your author page so shelves, reviews and series listings are accurate. Giveaways are paid.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Friends and family reviews on Amazon

Amazon's review rules bar authors' family and close friends from reviewing, and can remove reviews it links to your account. They can also skew your also-boughts away from real readers.

  2. Competitor names in keyword boxes

Guides warn that other authors' names, titles and brand names in KDP keywords can get a listing suppressed. Use reader phrases instead.

  3. Launching with no next step

A book with no newsletter link or next-book link in the back loses every reader it wins. Fix back matter before spending on promotion.

  4. Flip-flopping between KU and wide

KDP Select requires ebook exclusivity in 90-day terms that auto-renew. Decide on a strategy per series and mark the renewal dates.

  5. Paying for undisclosed 'reviews'

The FTC's 2024 rule bans buying reviews. ARC readers who got a free copy should say so.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build book sales?

A single launch spikes and fades. Steady sales usually come from a series, a growing newsletter and repeated promotions over many months, so plan for compounding rather than one big week.

Should I enroll in KDP Select?

It puts your ebook in Kindle Unlimited and unlocks Countdown or free-day promotions, but requires ebook exclusivity for 90-day terms that auto-renew. Many romance and genre authors use it; others prefer selling wide. Pick one per series.

How do I get a BookBub Featured Deal?

The book must be free or discounted at least 50%, meet length minimums and not have been cheaper recently. Selection is editorial and competitive; reviews and a strong blurb help. Submitting is free.

Can I ask friends to review my book?

Not on Amazon, which bars reviews from family and close friends. Use ARC readers who disclose the free copy instead.

Do I need ads?

No. Product-page work, a newsletter, ARC reviews and deal promotions all work without ads. Outpost plans run at $0 extra spend.

Is Outpost available for authors today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For an author, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage retailer listings, BookBub or reviewer outreach. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
