CreatorsOnline communities and memberships playbook

Grow a community people join for each other, not just for you

Members arrive through the founder's content, platform discovery, events and other members. Outpost turns what you share about your community into public, searchable articles and drafts replies to the threads where people look for groups like yours.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Most members find a community through its host: a newsletter, YouTube channel, podcast or LinkedIn presence that shows how the host thinks. Platform discovery adds a second door: Skool's Discovery page, Discord Server Discovery and listing sites like Disboard. Members inviting friends and public, indexable discussions (on Discourse or public Circle spaces) are the doors that compound over time.

The buying journey

Follow the host's content for a while, see a member win or a lively thread, visit the about page to judge who is inside and what happens weekly, join free or start a trial, and stay if they get a reply and a first win in the first week. Retention is acquisition for communities: churned members don't refer.

What community builders aim for

  • A steady flow of new members beyond launch week
  • Listing and ranking in platform discovery (Skool, Discord)
  • Public content that ranks and gets cited, without exposing private discussions
  • Members who invite peers and show up to events

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Founder-led content

    Essential

Your newsletter, videos or posts are the top of the funnel. Each piece should point to one community thread or event, not just a generic join link.

  2. Platform discovery (Skool, Discord)

    High

Skool lists groups in Discovery once they meet member, post and activity thresholds and ranks by keywords and a trending score. Discord Server Discovery requires a Community server that meets its eligibility checklist.

  3. Public, indexable content

    High

Selected public threads, member spotlights and resource pages on Discourse or public Circle spaces can rank and be cited by AI search. Keep paid discussions private and publish summaries with permission.

  4. Events and live sessions

    High

AMAs, workshops and co-working sessions give non-members a taste and members a reason to bring friends. CMX's 2022 report found 49% of respondents planned community-led events.

  5. Member referrals and partner hosts

    Medium

Referral rewards and co-hosted sessions with adjacent creators reach audiences that already trust someone.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Fix the front door

    • Rewrite the about page: who it's for, what happens each week, three recent member wins
    • Add keywords your audience searches to the Skool or Discord description and tags
    • Check Discord Community and Discovery eligibility in Server Settings, or Skool's discovery requirements
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Make some of it public

    • Pick five strong discussions and, with members' permission, publish anonymized summaries as public pages
    • Publish a resource page that answers a question your niche searches
    • Link both from your newsletter or channel
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Events

    • Run one open event (AMA or workshop) that non-members can join
    • Co-host one session with an adjacent creator
    • Follow up with attendees with a specific thread to join
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Referrals and retention

    • Launch a simple member referral offer
    • Set up a first-week welcome flow so every new member gets a reply and a first task
    • Review joins by source and first-week activity; plan next month's events

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Relying on platform discovery alone

Skool and Discord discovery reward groups that are already active. A new, quiet group rarely surfaces; your own content has to fill it first.

  2. Opening an empty room

Launching to strangers with no seeded discussions or members makes the first visitors leave. Seed it with a small group you invite personally before opening wider.

  3. Everything behind the paywall

If nothing is public, search engines and AI assistants have nothing to find. Publish selected summaries and resources, with members' permission.

  4. Gaming listing sites

Auto-bumping on Disboard is against its rules and can get a server delisted. Bump by hand or not at all.

  5. Measuring member count instead of activity

Discovery rankings and referrals follow activity. Track weekly active members and first-week replies, not just signups.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my community into Skool Discovery?

Skool lists groups that meet minimum member, post and activity thresholds and have a complete description, about page and media. Ranking then depends on keywords and recent activity, so a small, active group can outrank a big quiet one.

How long does it take to grow a community?

Most grow slowly at first. Expect months of host content, events and seeded discussions before referrals and discovery carry a meaningful share of joins.

Should community content be public?

Some of it. Keep member discussions private, but publish resource pages and anonymized summaries with permission so search and AI assistants can find you.

Is Discord or Skool better for a paid community?

It depends on your members. Discord suits real-time chat and gaming-adjacent audiences; Skool combines a feed, courses and discovery. Pick where your members already spend time.

Is Outpost available for communities today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For a community, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage platform listings or events. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
