SaaSChrome extensions playbook

Get your extension installed, and kept, by the people who need it

The Chrome Web Store ranks extensions partly on ratings and on how many installs stay installed, and its editors choose collections themselves. Outpost works on the listing, the badge path, the other browser stores and the web pages that send installs, and logs every step.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

People find extensions three ways: searching the Chrome Web Store for a task, searching Google for a problem ('how to bulk download images from a page') and landing on a page that recommends an extension, or seeing it in a video, a newsletter or an 'alternatives' list. Editorial collections and the Featured badge help inside the store, but much of the volume starts on the open web.

The buying journey

Installing is one click, so the decision is fast. It rests on the listing: a clear single purpose, screenshots showing it working, the permissions warning, rating count and recent reviews. The real test comes after install. Users who do not see value in the first minute uninstall, and the store's ranking takes uninstalls into account.

What extension developers aim for

  • Rank in Chrome Web Store search for the core task
  • Earn the Featured badge and avoid policy strikes
  • Turn installs into weekly active users
  • Convert free users to a paid tier or a companion web app
  • Expand to Edge and Firefox with little extra work

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Chrome Web Store listing

    Essential

Google says store ranking uses a heuristic that includes user ratings and usage statistics, such as downloads compared with uninstalls over time, and that search uses listing metadata. A clear purpose, real screenshots and a complete listing are the base of everything else.

  2. Job-to-be-done SEO pages

    Essential

Many installs start with a Google search for a task. A page that explains how to do the task, with the extension as the fast way, captures that search and links to the store listing.

  3. Featured and Established Publisher badges

    High

Badges can improve search and filter ranking and lead to promotions. The Featured badge is given after manual review by the Chrome team, and you can nominate through One Stop Support. Neither badge can be bought.

  4. Other browser stores

    Medium

Microsoft Edge Add-ons is free to register and submit to, and Firefox Add-ons (AMO) reaches users Chrome does not. Each listing is another search surface for little extra work.

  5. Launch platforms and alternatives directories

    Medium

Product Hunt, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub list extensions next to the apps they replace or improve, which brings early reviews and lasting comparison traffic.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Listing and policy check

    • Rewrite the listing to state the single purpose in the first line
    • Replace screenshots with shots of the extension working on a real page, plus a short video
    • Check the description for keyword repetition and brand lists that break the spam policy
    • Make sure the Privacy tab matches your privacy policy and request only the permissions you need
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Activation and reviews

    • Add a first-run page that shows value in under a minute
    • Add a gentle in-extension prompt to rate it after a successful use
    • Reply to every existing review, especially negative ones, and fix what you can
    • Nominate the extension for the Featured badge through One Stop Support if it meets the criteria
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Web demand

    • Publish three task pages for the searches that lead to your extension
    • Publish an 'alternatives' page comparing your extension honestly with the best-known one
    • List on AlternativeTo and SaaSHub against the right products
    • Submit the same package to Microsoft Edge Add-ons
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Launch and measure

    • Launch on Product Hunt with a GIF of the extension in use
    • Submit to Firefox Add-ons if the code is compatible
    • Compare weekly users with installs to see where people drop off
    • Plan the next update and its changelog entry, since a fresh update gives you something to announce

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Keyword stuffing the description

Chrome Web Store policy treats irrelevant or excessive keywords as spam, including lists of sites or brands and repeating the same keyword more than five times. It can get the listing rejected or removed.

  2. Bundling unrelated features

Chrome extensions must have a single, narrow purpose. A 'toolbox' that does five unrelated things is harder to rank, harder to explain, and at risk under the single-purpose policy.

  3. Asking to be put in a collection

Google states that requests to be placed in a collection are not accepted. Put the effort into the Featured badge criteria and the listing instead.

  4. Ignoring uninstalls

Usage, including downloads compared with uninstalls, feeds the store's ranking. An extension that installs well but loses users in the first minute will slide. Fix first-run value before buying traffic.

  5. Permission requests that scare users

Broad 'read and change all your data on all websites' permissions reduce installs and invite scrutiny. Ask for the narrowest permissions and explain why in the listing.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Prepares your Chrome Web Store listing copy from your confirmed facts, written against Google's spam policy, plus a screenshot plan

  • Publishes task pages that rank for the problems your extension solves and link straight to the store listing

  • Prepares your Edge Add-ons and Firefox listings, plus AlternativeTo, SaaSHub and Product Hunt, for you to submit, with a receipt for each

  • Tracks search visibility on the web and in AI assistants, next to the installs you share, so you can see which pages bring users

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How does the Chrome Web Store rank extensions?

Google says ranking uses a heuristic that includes user ratings and usage statistics, such as downloads compared with uninstalls over time, along with factors like design and clear purpose. Search also uses your listing metadata. There is no secret keyword trick.

How do I get the Featured badge?

The Chrome team reviews extensions by hand for best practices, a clear listing and good images. You can nominate through the One Stop Support page if you meet the listed criteria. The badge cannot be bought.

Can I pay to be in a Chrome Web Store collection?

No. Collections are chosen by the store team, and Google says requests to be placed in one are not accepted. Focus on the badge criteria, ratings and a strong listing.

Should I publish on Edge and Firefox too?

Usually yes. Edge Add-ons is free to register and submit to and accepts Chromium extensions with few changes. Firefox needs compatibility work but reaches a separate audience. Each store is another place to be found.

Does an extension need a website?

Yes. Many installs begin with a Google search for a task, not a store search. A simple site with task pages, a privacy page and a changelog captures those searches and earns links the store listing cannot.

How fast will this work?

Listing fixes can affect store conversion within weeks. Ratings and web SEO build over months. Badge eligibility depends on review timing and your compliance history, which can take months for new publishers.
