SaaSAI chatbots playbook

Put your AI chatbot where teams already shop for one

Chatbot buyers find tools inside Shopify, Slack, Zapier and HubSpot, then test a live bot before they talk to anyone. Outpost prepares your listings, builds the comparison pages, and keeps a receipt for every submission you make.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Most chatbot buyers start inside the software they already run. A merchant searches the Shopify App Store, a support lead browses the Slack Marketplace or a HubSpot integration, and an ops person checks whether a Zapier integration exists. Others come from AI directories such as There's An AI For That and Future Tools, or from searches like 'Intercom alternative' and 'AI chatbot for Shopify'. Nearly all of them want to talk to a working bot trained on real content before they book a call.

The buying journey

A trigger such as rising ticket volume, after-hours questions or unqualified leads leads to a marketplace or Google search for the platform they use. The buyer shortlists two or three bots, tries a live demo, then runs a trial on their own help docs. Before installing, they check what data the bot stores, which model it uses, and how it handles wrong answers. Integration depth with their help desk or store usually decides it.

What SaaS teams aim for

  • Deflect repetitive support tickets
  • Answer customers outside business hours
  • Capture and qualify leads on the website
  • Hand off cleanly to a human agent
  • Keep answers grounded in the company's own docs

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Integration marketplaces (Shopify App Store, Slack Marketplace, Zapier, HubSpot)

    Essential

Buyers search these marketplaces with intent already formed, and each one has entry rules you have to plan for. Slack calls an app unsuitable if it has fewer than 10 active workspaces and fewer than 10 weekly active users. Zapier needs 3 or more users with live Zaps.

  2. Live demo on your site plus comparison pages

    Essential

Chatbot buyers judge quality by talking to the bot. A public demo trained on your own docs, plus honest 'vs' pages for the incumbents, converts searchers who come in from alternatives queries.

  3. AI directories

    High

Directories like TAAFT, Future Tools and Toolify are where non-technical buyers browse AI tools. Each one has different rules (for example, Future Tools does not accept waitlist-only products), so the order you submit in matters.

  4. Launch platforms (Product Hunt, Show HN)

    Medium

These are useful once for early adopters and backlinks, especially when the demo works for anyone who clicks.

  5. Founder communities (r/SaaS, Indie Hackers)

    Supporting

These communities give feedback and early users when you share build lessons, not pitches. Expect to give value before any promotion is tolerated.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

Positioning, proof and a public demo

    • Pick one platform wedge (for example Shopify stores or Slack-based internal support) instead of 'chatbot for everyone'
    • Publish a live demo bot trained on your own docs, with no signup wall
    • Add an accuracy and data-handling page: which model you use, how long data is retained, and how the bot handles questions it can't answer
    • Audit claims on the site and remove anything you can't substantiate
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

Directory submissions in the right order

    • Submit to There's An AI For That first, since its launch rules ask that a tool not appear on other platforms before launching there
    • Submit to Future Tools, Toolify and other AI directories with a consistent description and screenshots
    • Claim a G2 profile, since chatbot software is B2B, and ask early customers for reviews without offering rewards for positive ratings
    • Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so new pages get indexed
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Marketplace readiness

    • Check marketplace thresholds (Slack's 10 active workspaces, Zapier's 3 users with live Zaps) and recruit design partners to meet them
    • Prepare the Shopify listing: tags for its primary function, no keyword-stuffed subtitle, screenshots of the real UI
    • Draft the Slack listing disclosures: an LLM accuracy disclaimer, the model, data retention and residency
    • Publish one integration how-to per platform
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Comparison content and launch

    • Publish two honest comparison pages against the incumbents in your wedge
    • Launch on Product Hunt or Show HN with the live demo as the main link
    • Answer chatbot-selection threads in founder communities, disclosing that you built the product
    • Review which directories and pages sent trial signups, and plan next month around them

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Overclaiming what the bot can do

The FTC's Operation AI Comply took action against AI claims it called deceptive, including DoNotPay's 'robot lawyer'. Its chair said there is 'no AI exemption from the laws on the books.' Say what the bot does, show where it fails, and back up any accuracy claim.

  2. Submitting to marketplaces before you qualify

Slack's guidelines call apps with fewer than 10 active workspaces and fewer than 10 weekly active users unsuitable, and Zapier needs live users. Recruit design partners first, or the rejection costs you weeks.

  3. Hiding the demo behind a sales call

Buyers in this category judge a bot by talking to it. A signup wall or 'book a demo' button in front of the bot loses the visitors who arrived from directories and comparison searches.

  4. Chasing the head term 'chatbot marketing'

Much of that search is marketers who want to use chatbots, not buyers of yours. Platform-specific and alternatives queries carry clearer buying intent.

  5. Skipping data and model disclosures

Slack asks AI apps to disclose the model, data retention and LLM data use, and bars using Slack data to train LLMs. Buyers ask the same questions, so put the answers on a public page.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Prepares your bot's AI directory listings in an order that respects 'list here first' rules, for you to submit, and logs a receipt for each

  • Drafts marketplace listings for Shopify, Slack, Zapier and HubSpot against each platform's written rules, for you to submit

  • Publishes comparison and integration how-to pages aimed at platform-specific searches, not the mixed-intent head term

  • Checks every claim in what it drafts against your confirmed facts before anything goes live

  • Tracks whether AI assistants mention your bot for queries like 'best AI chatbot for Shopify'

  • Reports which directory, page or community post sent clicks, next to the trial signups you share

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Should I list on every AI directory at once?

No. Some directories, There's An AI For That among them, ask that a tool not appear elsewhere before it launches there, and others reject waitlist-only products. Submit in order, starting where launch rules are strictest, and only once your demo works for anyone who clicks.

Is the Shopify App Store or the Slack Marketplace worth it for a small team?

Usually yes, if your bot fits that platform's buyers, because people there already want an add-on. Plan for the entry rules. Slack wants real usage (at least 10 active workspace installs, maintained through review) and AI disclosures, and Shopify wants accurate tags, real screenshots and no unsupported claims.

How fast will SEO bring trials?

Comparison and integration pages usually take months to rank and compound after that. Marketplace and directory listings can bring visitors sooner, so we run both in parallel.

Do I need a public demo?

For chatbots, nearly always. A bot that answers questions about your own docs is the strongest proof you can show, and it lets directory traffic qualify itself.

Can Outpost write accuracy or ROI claims for my site?

Only claims you can back up. Outpost flags unsupported statistics and guarantees, which is also what the FTC and Shopify's listing rules expect.

Does this work at $0 extra spend?

Yes. Every plan works without an ad budget. Some AI directories sell paid placements, and Outpost marks those as optional and uses the free routes first.
