AppsWeb apps and PWAs playbook

No app store to discover you? Then the whole web is your store.

A web app has no store charts, no editorial picks and no store search. Discovery comes from pages search engines can read, launch platforms, directories and, if you package it as a PWA, the Microsoft Store and Google Play. Outpost builds that whole surface and logs each piece.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Web app users arrive from search (Google, Bing, and AI assistants that cite web pages), from links on launch platforms and directories such as Product Hunt, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub, from communities where someone recommended the tool, and from shared links to things made in the app. Packaging the app as a PWA adds store listings: Microsoft documents publishing PWAs to the Microsoft Store with PWABuilder, and Trusted Web Activities let a PWA ship on Google Play.

The buying journey

There is no install step to scare people off, so the first visit is the trial. Visitors land on a page, try the app straight away or after a quick sign-up, and decide in minutes. Return visits depend on being easy to come back to: a bookmark, an installed PWA icon, email, or a shared workspace.

What app makers aim for

  • Get app routes and marketing pages crawled and indexed
  • Rank for the task the app does
  • Make the app installable so users come back
  • Gain store presence via Microsoft Store and Google Play packaging
  • Turn shared links and outputs into acquisition

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Crawlable, task-focused SEO

    Essential

Search is the main discovery channel for web apps. Google can render JavaScript, but its docs warn about single-page-app pitfalls such as soft 404s from client-side routing. Marketing and use-case pages should return real HTML, status codes and titles.

  2. Launch platforms and alternatives directories

    High

Without a store, Product Hunt, Uneed, Peerlist, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub act as your storefronts. Each gives a burst of users and a lasting listing that ranks for comparison searches.

  3. PWA installability

    High

Chrome shows its install prompt only when the app has a valid manifest (name, 192px and 512px icons, start_url, display mode), is served over HTTPS, and the user has engaged with the page. An installed icon brings people back without a store.

  4. Store packaging (Microsoft Store and Google Play)

    Medium

Microsoft says no code changes are needed to publish a PWA to the Microsoft Store: reserve a name in Partner Center, package with PWABuilder and submit. Trusted Web Activities do the same for Google Play. Each store listing is another search surface.

  5. Shareable outputs

    Medium

If users create something in the app (a link, a document, an image, a schedule), a light 'made with' link on shared outputs turns every share into a referral.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Free with ads

  • WorksMicrosoft Store

In the Microsoft Store, an app's primary content may not be advertising, ads must be clearly distinguishable, and the privacy statement must say personal data goes to the ad provider and how to opt out of interest-based ads.

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

  • WorksPeerlist Launchpad

Peerlist Launchpad launches only from individual profiles (valid name and photo, not a company), bans SEO agencies from launching for clients, requires a demo link, and treats unsolicited upvote requests as spam, with no business-model restriction.

  • Strong fitSaaSHub

SaaSHub rejects unreleased products, waitlist landing pages, products on free subdomains, software development agencies and non-English products, accepts mobile apps only with decent websites, and sends submissions that list no competitors to the bottom of the queue.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Putting everything behind the app shell

If marketing pages are rendered only by client-side JavaScript, with no real HTML or status codes, search engines may misread them. Google's JavaScript SEO docs specifically call out soft 404s in single-page apps.

  2. Forcing sign-up before value

A web app's advantage is zero install. A sign-up wall before the first result throws that away and gets your Show HN post marked off-topic. Let people try first.

  3. Treating 'PWA' as a marketing claim

Users do not search for 'PWA'. They search for the task. Installability is a retention feature, so market the job and offer the install after a success moment.

  4. Changing the manifest without resubmitting

For Microsoft Store PWAs, normal code changes ship from your server, but manifest changes such as a new name or icon need a new package and a resubmission.

  5. One giant homepage

A single page cannot rank for many tasks. Separate, useful use-case pages, each with a working example, give search engines and AI assistants specific answers to cite.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits whether your marketing pages are crawlable, finds broken links, server errors and missing titles, and lists fixes in priority order

  • Connects Search Console in a couple of clicks, so you see which new pages Google finds and what they earn

  • Publishes use-case and comparison pages built around the tasks your app does

  • Prepares Product Hunt, Uneed, Peerlist, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub listings on a sequenced schedule for you to submit, with a receipt for each

  • Tracks the clicks every listing and post sends to your site, next to Search Console and AI-assistant mentions, in one weekly briefing

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can a web app rank in Google if it is a single-page app?

Yes, but make it easy. Google renders JavaScript, with limits. Serve marketing and use-case pages as real HTML with proper titles and status codes, and handle 404s correctly on client-side routes.

Is turning my web app into a PWA worth it?

Usually, for apps people come back to. Installability gives users a home-screen or desktop icon, and it is the route into the Microsoft Store and Google Play. Chrome needs a manifest with name, icons, start_url and display mode, plus HTTPS.

How do I get a PWA into the Microsoft Store?

Microsoft's docs describe it: reserve an app name in Partner Center, package the PWA with PWABuilder, and submit the generated packages. No code changes are required, and review typically takes a day or two.

Can I put a PWA on Google Play?

Yes, by wrapping it as a Trusted Web Activity, an Android app that opens your PWA full screen. PWABuilder and Google's Bubblewrap tools can generate the package.

Which launch platforms suit web apps?

Product Hunt for broad launches, Uneed and Peerlist for smaller ones, Show HN for technical tools that work without sign-up, and AlternativeTo and SaaSHub for lasting comparison traffic.

How long does SEO take for a new web app?

Months. Indexing setup and launch links help early, but rankings for task searches build over a quarter or more. Outpost publishes steadily and shows you exactly what was done each week.
