01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Security practitioners discover tools through technical work: a write-up on a new attack technique, an open-source scanner on GitHub, a talk at a BSides or Black Hat, or a recommendation in a practitioner community. Buyers then check peer reviews on Gartner Peer Insights, G2 and PeerSpot, and look for proof such as documentation, a security page and certifications. Startup stages like Black Hat's Startup Spotlight and RSAC's Innovation Sandbox put early companies in front of buyers and investors.

The buying journey

A practitioner finds you through research or a free tool and tries it on a real problem. They then champion it to a security leader, who brings in procurement, legal and a security review of the vendor itself. Expect questionnaires, a proof of concept and a long cycle for anything that touches production data.

What SaaS teams aim for

  • Earn credibility with practitioners before reaching buyers
  • Get on shortlists through peer reviews
  • Make vendor security review fast with public documentation
  • Get stage time at security conference startup programs
  • Turn free tools or research into qualified pipeline

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Original technical research and open-source tools

    Essential

Practitioners judge vendors by the quality of their technical work. A real write-up or a useful free tool travels through the security community in a way marketing copy doesn't.

  2. Peer review sites (Gartner Peer Insights, G2, PeerSpot)

    High

Buyers check peers before shortlisting. Gartner Peer Insights verifies reviewers and covers security markets such as endpoint protection.

  3. Practitioner communities (Hacker News, security subreddits, BSides)

    High

These are where tools and research get discussed. Many of them remove vendor promotion, so share research and tools, not pitches.

  4. Conference startup contests

    Medium

Black Hat's Startup Spotlight is open to startups 5 years old or less with fewer than 50 employees, with no entry fee. RSAC Innovation Sandbox finalists got a $5 million SAFE in 2026.

  5. Founder and researcher LinkedIn

    Medium

Security leaders follow people who share real findings. Posts by the researcher who did the work beat posts from the brand account.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Trust surface

    • Publish a security and trust page: data handling, architecture overview, certifications in progress, how to report a vulnerability
    • Make product documentation public enough for a practitioner to judge the product
    • Remove fear-based copy and vague 'AI-powered' claims from the homepage
    • Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Technical content

    • Publish one deep technical post from real work (a detection approach, an analysis of a misconfiguration class)
    • Release or polish a small free tool or script with a clear README
    • Share the research on Show HN and relevant communities with disclosure, following each one's rules
    • Line up the next two research topics
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Reviews and profiles

    • Claim profiles on G2 and Gartner Peer Insights, and list the product on PeerSpot
    • Ask design partners for honest reviews through each site's own review flow
    • Add the product to AlternativeTo against the incumbents you replace
    • Update Crunchbase with consistent positioning
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Conference pipeline

    • Check RSAC Innovation Sandbox 2027 and the next Black Hat Startup Spotlight windows on the official sites
    • Draft the video pitch script (3 minutes for RSAC as reported, 5 minutes for Black Hat)
    • Submit a talk proposal to a local BSides about the research
    • Review which research pieces brought trial signups and plan the next month

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Leading with fear

Security practitioners see doom-laden marketing every day and discount it. Specific technical evidence of what you detect or prevent earns more trust.

  2. Pitching in practitioner communities

Many security forums and subreddits remove vendor promotion. Read each community's rules and share research or tools, with disclosure, instead of product announcements.

  3. Gating everything

Locking every whitepaper and doc behind a form stops practitioners from evaluating you and keeps the content from ranking. Keep technical depth public and gate only what genuinely needs a conversation.

  4. No public security posture

Security vendors get the toughest vendor reviews. Without a trust page, a vulnerability-reporting route and clear data handling, deals stall in procurement.

  5. Missing contest windows

Startup contest deadlines fall months before each conference (RSAC's 2026 deadline was in November 2025). Treat them as calendar items, not things to get to someday.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Turns the facts you confirm about your team's technical work into research articles aimed at practitioner searches, never generic filler

  • Prepares G2, Capterra and AlternativeTo listings for you to submit, with receipts

  • Prepares a Show HN post with disclosure, timed to when you can answer comments, for you to post

  • Checks how AI assistants describe your product for '[category] tools' questions and whether they cite your research

  • Reports which articles and listings sent clicks, next to the trials you share

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Why does cybersecurity marketing take so long?

Security buyers check vendors more thoroughly than almost anyone. Trust builds through research, reviews and visible security practices over months. SEO compounds on a similar timeline.

Are startup contests worth it for an early company?

They can be. Black Hat's Startup Spotlight has no entry fee and is open to startups 5 years old or less with fewer than 50 employees, and RSAC Innovation Sandbox finalists received a $5 million SAFE in 2026. Check current terms on the official sites.

Should we open-source part of the product?

A free, useful tool is one of the most credible ways to reach practitioners. Only do it if you can maintain it, because an abandoned repo hurts trust.

Which review site matters most?

It depends on your buyer. Enterprise security teams often read Gartner Peer Insights, while mid-market buyers frequently use G2. Claim both and focus on whichever your prospects mention.

Can Outpost write our technical content?

Outpost drafts and structures content from your team's real findings and publishes it. It won't invent research, and your engineers should review anything technical.

Does this need an ad budget?

No. Every plan works at $0 extra spend. Conference booths and sponsored placements are optional extras.
