Desktop softwarePassword managers and privacy tools playbook

Nobody trusts a password manager because of an ad. They trust the audit

In security, proof is the marketing: a published third-party audit, documented encryption, telemetry that's off by default and an easy import. Outpost helps you publish that proof where privacy communities and switching users look, and every action comes with its own receipt.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Users come in waves. Many switch after a breach or a pricing change at their current provider, searching '<incumbent> alternative' or 'is <incumbent> safe'. Others follow recommendations from privacy communities and guides like Privacy Guides, which only recommend cloud password managers with a published independent audit. Teams and IT buyers compare on G2 and Capterra and ask for compliance reports.

The buying journey

The user reads the security documentation and audit history, checks for an import from their current manager, installs the browser extension and mobile app, imports, and lives with it for a few weeks before paying or rolling it out to family or a team. Trust is slow to build and lost fast.

What software makers aim for

  • A published, independent security audit
  • Ranking for switching searches after breaches or pricing changes
  • Recommendation by privacy communities and guides
  • Smooth import and browser extension adoption
  • Family and team plan expansion

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Security documentation and audits

    Essential

Privacy Guides' minimum criteria for cloud password managers include modern end-to-end encryption, documented security practices, a published independent audit and optional telemetry. Bitwarden publishes reports from firms such as Cure53. Your audit page is your most important landing page.

  2. Switching and comparison SEO

    Essential

After LastPass disclosed in December 2022 that customer vault backups had been copied, searches for alternatives followed. Honest comparison and import guides, ready before the next event, catch these users.

  3. Privacy communities and guides

    High

r/privacy, r/PrivacyGuides and the Privacy Guides forum discuss tools in depth. Privacy Guides says it doesn't make money from recommendations or use affiliate links, so the only way in is meeting its criteria.

  4. Browser extension stores

    High

Most daily use happens in the browser. The Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons and Edge Add-ons listings, ratings and reviews are discovery surfaces in their own right.

  5. Open-source distribution

    Medium

If you're open source, GitHub, F-Droid and Flathub build credibility with technical users who want to inspect the code.

  6. B2B review sites

    Supporting

IT buyers compare team password managers on G2 and Capterra and ask for SOC 2 and audit reports.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Publish the proof

    • Publish a security page that documents the encryption design, key derivation and what the server can and can't see
    • List every audit with the firm, date and full report, or schedule your first independent audit
    • Make non-essential telemetry opt-in and say so clearly
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Make switching painless

    • Test import from the five most common password managers and browsers, and publish a guide for each
    • Write honest comparison pages against the incumbents, covering encryption, audits and price
    • List on AlternativeTo against those incumbents
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Get the extension found

    • Rewrite the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons and Edge listings around what users search for (autofill, passkeys, sharing)
    • Submit to F-Droid and Flathub if you're open source
    • Answer real questions in privacy communities as the developer, following each community's rules
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

Prepare for the next switching wave

    • Prepare a 'switching from X' page for each major competitor so it's live before the next breach or price change
    • Ask team customers for G2 or Capterra reviews
    • Track imports completed per source, not just installs

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Launching without an audit

Privacy Guides won't recommend a cloud password manager without a published independent audit, and informed users won't trust it either. Budget for an audit before a big launch.

  2. 'Military-grade' and 'unhackable' copy

Security users see these phrases as a warning sign. Explain the actual design: algorithms, key derivation, what's encrypted and what isn't.

  3. Telemetry on by default

Non-essential telemetry should be optional under Privacy Guides' criteria. Default-on analytics in a privacy product gets called out quickly.

  4. Relying on affiliate 'best of' lists

Some 'best password manager' lists are affiliate-driven, so placement can follow payouts rather than quality. Build your own proof and community trust instead.

  5. Weak import

Nobody re-types hundreds of passwords. If importing from the main competitors isn't smooth and documented, switching campaigns fail.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Structures and publishes your security, audit and import pages so they rank for the trust and switching searches users make

  • Prepares 'switching from X' pages in advance so they're live when the next breach or price change sends users looking

  • Rewrites your Chrome, Firefox and Edge extension listings and prepares F-Droid, Flathub, AlternativeTo, G2 and Capterra listings where they fit, for you to submit, with receipts

  • Tracks AI-search answers for prompts like 'most secure password manager' or 'LastPass alternative' and reports changes

  • Never invents claims: every security statement Outpost publishes for you is checked against the facts you confirmed

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do we need an audit before launching?

For a cloud password manager, effectively yes. Privacy Guides lists a published audit from a reputable independent third party among its minimum criteria, and security-literate users look for one first.

Should we be open source?

It helps with technical users and lets you distribute on F-Droid and Flathub, but Privacy Guides lists open source as a best-case criterion, not a minimum. Documented security and audits matter more.

How do we capture switchers after a competitor's breach?

Prepare in advance. After LastPass disclosed in December 2022 that vault backups were copied, users went looking for alternatives. Have import guides and fair comparison pages live before anything happens, and don't gloat. Exploiting a breach looks bad.

Can we pay to be on privacy recommendation lists?

Not on the credible ones. Privacy Guides says it doesn't make money from recommending products and doesn't use affiliate links. Meet the criteria and engage openly with the community.

How long does it take?

Trust builds over months. Extension listings and comparison pages start working within weeks; audits, community reputation and search rankings compound over the following months.

What does Outpost cost?

Plans start at $49/month (Runway) and $149/month (Growth); Autopilot is $499/month. Every plan works at $0 extra ad spend, with a receipt for every action.
