SaaSLegal tech playbook

Lawyers buy software from peers, marketplaces and vendors that answer the security questions

Law firms are cautious buyers with client confidentiality on the line. Outpost's playbook puts your product where they look (practice-management marketplaces, legal tech directories, TECHSHOW) and builds the practice-area content and security pages that get you shortlisted.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Small and mid-size firms often discover tools inside the practice-management system they already use, such as Clio's App Directory, and from peers, bar association programs, CLE sessions and legal tech media. Larger firms' innovation and knowledge-management teams also use research directories such as Legaltech Hub and events such as ABA TECHSHOW. Searches are practice-specific: "immigration case management software", "personal injury intake software".

The buying journey

A lawyer or practice manager feels a specific pain, asks peers or checks their practice-management marketplace, shortlists a few tools, and looks hard at security, data handling and integrations before a trial. Larger firms add IT, risk and procurement review. Trust and fit with existing systems often matter more than features.

What SaaS teams aim for

  • Listing in the practice-management marketplaces your buyers use
  • Practice-area pages that rank for specific workflows
  • A security and confidentiality page that answers what firms ask
  • Presence at TECHSHOW and in legal tech media and directories
  • Referenceable customers in each target practice area

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Practice-management marketplaces (Clio App Directory)

    Essential

Firms browse integrations inside the system they already use. Clio's listing process includes a security review, a demo and a structured listing with practice areas and keywords.

  2. Practice-area content

    High

Lawyers search by practice and task. Pages for 'family law client intake' or 'immigration deadline tracking' match those searches and show you understand the work.

  3. Legal tech events (ABA TECHSHOW, state bar shows)

    High

TECHSHOW and state bar events gather lawyers looking for tools, and TECHSHOW runs a Startup Alley for new companies.

  4. Legal tech directories and media

    Medium

Legaltech Hub is a research directory for legal tech buyers, and legal tech news sites cover new products and integrations.

  5. CLE webinars with bar associations

    Medium

Teaching a practical CLE session builds trust with lawyers in a way a demo cannot.

  6. Review sites

    Medium

Small firms compare legal software on Capterra and G2, which list B2B legal tools.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Generic 'for law firms' positioning

A tax practice and a criminal defense firm have little in common. Name practice areas and show their workflows.

  2. Security answers only on request

Client confidentiality is the first concern. Marketplaces such as Clio send a security questionnaire before listing, so have the answers public and ready.

  3. Breaking marketplace listing rules

Clio's guidelines forbid using 'Clio' in your app name or logo and set limits on descriptions, practice areas and keywords. Listings that ignore them slow approval.

  4. Implying legal advice or guaranteed outcomes

Marketing that suggests the software gives legal advice or guarantees results worries cautious buyers. Describe what the tool does and where the lawyer stays in charge.

  5. Treating TECHSHOW as a one-day push

Meetings booked before the event and follow-up afterward produce most of the value.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits your site's security, practice-area and integration pages for what law firms check first, and lists what's missing

  • Drafts marketplace listing copy to each marketplace's rules, such as Clio's description, practice-area and keyword limits, for you to submit

  • Writes practice-area workflow content that you or a lawyer reviews before publishing

  • Prepares review-site and directory profiles for you to submit, with a receipt for each action

  • Writes articles you can place on the Calendar ahead of ABA TECHSHOW and state bar programs, and tracks whether AI assistants recommend you for practice-specific prompts

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Where do small law firms find software?

Often inside the practice-management system they already use, such as Clio's App Directory, and from peers, bar association programs, CLE sessions and review sites. Practice-specific searches are the main SEO opening.

How do we get listed in the Clio App Directory?

Build an integration, complete Clio's security and compliance questionnaire, demo the integration, then fill in the listing form; Clio's partnerships team prepares a draft for your approval. The listing needs a short description of 10 words or fewer, up to two categories, up to three practice areas and up to five keywords.

Is ABA TECHSHOW worth it for a startup?

It is one of the main events where lawyers look at technology, and it runs a Startup Alley for new companies. The 2027 conference is March 3-6 at McCormick Place in Chicago, with the EXPO on March 3-5.

How do we handle security questions in marketing?

Publish them. A clear page on data storage, encryption, access controls, and how client data is used, including by any AI features, removes the first objection before a sales call.

How long does legal tech marketing take to work?

Legal buyers are cautious and cycles are long. Marketplace listings and events can bring conversations within weeks; practice-area content usually takes months to rank and build trust.

Which Outpost plan fits?

Early legal tech products usually start on Growth ($149). Agencies serving several legal tech clients can use the Agency plan, from $1,499. No plan requires ad spend.
