Local businessesLaw firms playbook

People look for a lawyer on one of the worst days of their year.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Clients search Google for a practice area and place ('divorce lawyer near me', 'DUI attorney [city]'), read answers to their legal question, compare Maps results and reviews, and check legal directories like Avvo, Justia, Martindale-Hubbell and FindLaw. Referrals from other lawyers, past clients and bar lawyer referral services remain a major source.

The buying journey

A question-driven search or referral, then reading one or two practice-area pages, a look at reviews and attorney bios, a directory check, then a call or contact form for a consultation. Urgency varies a lot: criminal and injury matters move in hours, estate planning over weeks.

What law firms aim for

  • Rank in the Maps pack for each practice area in the firm's area
  • Answer the questions clients ask before they call
  • Keep directory profiles complete and consistent
  • Grow reviews without breaking advertising rules

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Google Business Profiles for firm and attorneys

    Essential

Google treats lawyers as practitioners who may have their own profiles, with specific naming rules in multi-attorney firms. Maps results drive many first calls.

  2. Practice-area and question pages

    Essential

Clients search their problem before they search for a lawyer. Accurate, jurisdiction-specific answers build trust and rank, as long as they avoid misleading claims.

  3. Legal directories

    High

Avvo, Justia, Martindale-Hubbell and FindLaw rank for many legal searches and are checked by clients; complete profiles add trust and visibility.

  4. Reviews within the rules

    High

Reviews influence the choice, but bar rules limit giving anything of value for recommendations and how results and testimonials are presented.

  5. Referral networks

    Medium

Other lawyers and bar referral services send many matters; a clear site makes those referrals convert.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Calling yourself a 'specialist' without certification

The ABA Model Rules restrict stating or implying that a lawyer is certified as a specialist unless certified by an approved organization. Most states have a version of this rule; check yours before using 'specialist' or 'expert'.

  2. Advertising results without context

Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications, which includes creating unjustified expectations. Many states add disclaimer requirements for past results and testimonials.

  3. Paying for reviews or recommendations

The Model Rules generally bar giving anything of value for recommending a lawyer, and the FTC rule bans buying reviews. Ask every client the same way, with no reward.

  4. Practice-area keywords in the profile name

'Smith Law - Best DUI Lawyer Dallas' breaks Google's name rules. Use the firm's real name.

  5. Generic national content

Law differs by state. Pages that ignore your jurisdiction are less useful to clients and can mislead them.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can each attorney have a Google Business Profile?

Google treats lawyers as practitioners who can have their own profile if they can be contacted at the verified location during stated hours. In a firm, the profile name includes only the attorney's name; the firm has its own profile.

Can we ask clients for reviews?

Generally yes, as long as you don't offer anything of value in return and replies protect client confidentiality. Check your state bar's rules and ethics opinions, which vary.

Can I call myself a specialist?

Only if your state allows it, which usually means certification by an approved body. The ABA Model Rules restrict implying certification otherwise.

Are legal directories worth it?

Free profiles on Avvo, Justia and Martindale-Hubbell are worth completing because they rank for many legal searches and clients check them. Paid upgrades are a separate decision.

How long does law firm SEO take?

Profile and directory fixes help within weeks. Practice-area pages take months to rank in competitive markets, then compound.

Does Outpost work for law firms today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For a law firm, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage legal directories or map listings. Anything it drafts waits for attorney review. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
