Podcast apps grow when podcasters tell their listeners

Listeners rarely switch players on their own. They switch for a feature, a creator's recommendation or a community. Outpost helps you earn those mentions, prepare listings where the podcast industry looks, and logs every action with a receipt.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

There are two audiences. Listeners usually stay with the player that came with their phone until a feature (transcripts, chapters, better search, cross-platform sync) or a creator they follow gives them a reason to switch. Podcasters choose recording, editing and hosting tools based on peers, industry news and conference talks. Both groups are reachable through the podcast industry's own channels: Podnews, a daily newsletter on podcasting news edited by James Cridland; the Podcasting 2.0 app directory, which lists players supporting open podcast namespace features; communities like r/podcasts and r/podcasting; and Podcast Movement events.

The buying journey

Listener hears about a feature or app from a podcast host, a newsletter or a forum -> tries it, often importing subscriptions via OPML -> keeps it if playback, sync and search are reliable -> pays for premium features or supports creators through it. Podcasters: hit a workflow problem -> read industry news or ask peers -> trial the tool on one episode -> adopt it for the show -> recommend it on air or in groups.

What app makers aim for

  • Listing in the Podcasting 2.0 app directory for the features you support
  • Coverage in Podnews and other podcast-industry outlets
  • On-air mentions from podcasters whose audiences fit
  • Store rankings for feature-based searches
  • Podcaster sign-ups for creator tools

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Podcaster partnerships

    Essential

A host recommending an app to their own listeners reaches people at the moment they are listening. Features that help creators (chapters, transcripts, supporter tools) give hosts a reason to mention you.

  2. Podcasting 2.0 feature support

    High

The Podcasting 2.0 app directory lists apps that support the open podcast namespace and sorts them by features supported. Supporting features like chapters and transcripts is both product and distribution.

  3. Podcast-industry press (Podnews)

    High

Podnews covers new apps and features, but requires your own domain and a product that is ready to launch. Send a complete release by email, with any embargo clearly marked.

  4. Feature-based ASO

    High

People search for 'podcast app with transcripts' or 'podcast app for Android Auto', not brand names. Store keywords around specific features are winnable.

  5. Podcast communities

    Medium

r/podcasts (listeners) and r/podcasting (creators) discuss tools often. Join threads with real answers; both communities restrict self-promotion.

  6. Industry events

    Supporting

Podcast Movement and Evolutions gather creators and industry people. Talks and demos reach decision-makers for creator tools.

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Free with in-app purchases

  • Poor fitF-Droid

F-Droid accepts only free/libre open-source apps, strictly forbids proprietary tracking or advertising libraries (e.g. Firebase, Play Services), and flags remaining ads, tracking or non-free network dependencies as anti-features.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • Poor fitF-Droid

F-Droid accepts only free/libre open-source apps, strictly forbids proprietary tracking or advertising libraries (e.g. Firebase, Play Services), and flags remaining ads, tracking or non-free network dependencies as anti-features.

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

  • Poor fitF-Droid

F-Droid accepts only free/libre open-source apps, strictly forbids proprietary tracking or advertising libraries (e.g. Firebase, Play Services), and flags remaining ads, tracking or non-free network dependencies as anti-features.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Asking listeners to switch with no reason

People stay with the default player out of habit. Lead with one feature they cannot get there.

  2. Pitching press before you are ready

Podnews will not cover products on free subdomains or placeholder sites, and fake customer logos count against you. Launch the product, then pitch.

  3. Making import hard

Switchers have years of subscriptions. If OPML import is buried, they give up before they hear an episode.

  4. Ignoring podcasters as a channel

Creators can recommend apps to their listeners in a way ads cannot. Features that help them are also marketing.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Rewrites store listings around the features that beat default players, for you to paste in

  • Prepares Podcasting 2.0 directory contributions and Podnews submissions that follow each outlet's stated rules

  • Drafts personal pitches to podcasters and founder answers for podcast communities for you to send and post

  • Publishes feature and how-to articles that rank for specific podcast searches over months

  • Measures clicks by source next to the installs and retention you share, with a receipt for every action

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How do we get into the Podcasting 2.0 apps list?

The site is open for contributions through its GitHub repository and an 'Edit this page' link. Support real namespace features first; the list is sorted by features supported.

Will Podnews cover our launch?

Possibly, if it is news. Podnews covers new apps and features but not products on free subdomains or placeholder sites. Email a complete release with copyable text and a clearly marked embargo.

Can listeners bring their subscriptions?

Most players support OPML export and import. Make it the first step of onboarding and show it in your screenshots.

Is a podcast player still a viable business?

It can be, in a focused niche: accessibility, specific platforms, learning or creator support. Be clear about why someone would leave the default app.

How long until feature pages rank?

A few months for most feature-based searches. Press and podcaster mentions can bring installs sooner.

Does this need an ad budget?

No. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend. Directory listings, press submissions and community work here are free.
