AppsAndroid apps playbook

Google Play gives you more testing tools than any store. Use them.

Android developers can A/B test store listings, run custom listings for different audiences, open pre-registration and ship to F-Droid or Galaxy Store as well. Outpost rewrites your listing within those rules and records every change you make, so you can judge it on evidence.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Most Android users find apps through Google Play search and browsing: category charts, editorial collections and 'similar apps' recommendations. Google Play indexes the title, short description and full description, so the listing text matters for search more than it does on iOS. Outside Play, users come from Google web search, which often shows Play results, from Reddit communities like r/androidapps, from tech sites and YouTube reviewers, and from alternative stores: F-Droid for privacy-minded users, Galaxy Store on Samsung phones, and Amazon Appstore on Fire tablets.

The buying journey

Users search, compare the first few results on icon, rating and screenshots, open one or two listings and install. The short description, the first screenshots and recent reviews do most of the work. Retention and Android vitals then feed back into how Play treats the app, so a listing that brings the wrong users can hurt.

What app makers aim for

  • Pass Google Play's testing requirement and reach production
  • Raise listing conversion with store listing experiments
  • Rank for the core task in Play search
  • Reach audiences outside Play through F-Droid, Galaxy Store and the web
  • Grow ratings and recent reviews

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Google Play listing optimization

    Essential

Play's metadata policy caps titles at 30 characters and bans emojis, ranking claims like '#1' and unattributed testimonials. Within those rules, the title, short description and description are indexed and can be tested with store listing experiments.

  2. Custom store listings and experiments

    Essential

Play supports up to 50 custom store listings with different names, icons, descriptions and graphics, and A/B testing of graphics and localized text. You can match a listing to a country or audience and test what converts.

  3. Testing and pre-registration

    High

New personal developer accounts must run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days before production. Pre-registration then lets interested users sign up before launch and get notified when the app goes live.

  4. Alternative Android stores

    Medium

F-Droid reaches users who want open-source, tracker-free apps, but it builds from source and forbids proprietary tracking SDKs. Galaxy Store reaches Samsung owners and Amazon Appstore reaches Fire tablets. Each is a separate audience with less competition.

  5. Web SEO and Android communities

    Medium

Users often search Google for 'best app for X on Android'. Comparison and how-to pages on your own site, plus thoughtful participation in r/androidapps and niche subreddits, catch users before they reach Play search.

Free with in-app purchases

  • Poor fitF-Droid

F-Droid accepts only free/libre open-source apps, strictly forbids proprietary tracking or advertising libraries (e.g. Firebase, Play Services), and flags remaining ads, tracking or non-free network dependencies as anti-features.

Free with ads

  • Poor fitF-Droid

F-Droid accepts only free/libre open-source apps, strictly forbids proprietary tracking or advertising libraries (e.g. Firebase, Play Services), and flags remaining ads, tracking or non-free network dependencies as anti-features.

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • Poor fitF-Droid

F-Droid accepts only free/libre open-source apps, strictly forbids proprietary tracking or advertising libraries (e.g. Firebase, Play Services), and flags remaining ads, tracking or non-free network dependencies as anti-features.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Technical eligibility

  • Amazon Appstore

Amazon Appstore requires that every native library in lib/arm64-v8a has a matching library in lib/armeabi-v7a, and tells developers not to remove 32-bit support.

  • Amazon Appstore

Amazon Appstore binaries can be up to 2.5 GB, OBB expansion files are not supported, and the console warns above 50 MB or on growth of more than 10%; Fire TV apps should ideally be 2 GB or less and stay under 4 GB installed.

  • Google Play

Apps on Google Play that target Android 15 (API 35)+ must support 16 KB memory page sizes on 64-bit devices; from 2027-02-01, updates that don't support 16 KB page sizes can't be released. Apps with only Java/Kotlin code already comply; apps with NDK/.so libraries (most game engines) must be rebuilt.

  • Google Play

Since August 2021, new apps on Google Play must be published as Android App Bundles (AAB); since June 2023 new and existing Android TV apps must be AABs too.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Breaking Play's metadata rules

Emojis in the title, '#1' or 'best' ranking claims, '50% off' and anonymous testimonials are all against Google Play's metadata policy. They can get updates rejected or limit promotion.

  2. Keyword stuffing the description

Play indexes the description, but its policy warns against repetitive or unrelated keywords and excessive length. Write for people and use the main terms naturally.

  3. Running out of testers mid-closed test

For new personal accounts, the closed test requires at least 12 testers opted in for 14 days in a row. Recruit more than 12 so a few dropping out does not reset your timeline.

  4. Submitting to F-Droid with tracking SDKs

F-Droid forbids proprietary tracking, analytics and ad libraries such as Firebase and Crashlytics, and apps that need Play Services will not build. Prepare a clean build flavour first.

  5. Never testing the listing

Play gives you free A/B tests that many developers never use. Even one experiment a month on the icon or first screenshot gives you evidence instead of guesses.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Rewrites your Play listing from your confirmed facts within the metadata policy's limits: title, short description and screenshot order

  • Runs before-and-after experiments on your website pages and records each change and its result

  • Plans the 12-tester, 14-day closed test and drafts tester-recruiting posts that follow each subreddit's rules, for you to post

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is the 12 testers for 14 days rule?

Google Play requires new personal developer accounts to run a closed test with at least 12 testers who stay opted in for 14 days in a row before applying for production access. Organization accounts are exempt. Recruit extra testers so dropouts do not reset the clock.

Does Google Play index the full description?

Yes. Play indexes the title, short description and full description, unlike Apple, which uses a separate keyword field. Write naturally and avoid repetition, which the policy forbids.

What should I A/B test first?

The icon or the first screenshot, since they are seen in search results and on the listing. Play's store listing experiments can test graphics and localized text against your current version.

Is F-Droid worth it?

For open-source apps without proprietary SDKs, yes. It reaches users who actively avoid trackers and often contribute back. It builds from your source, so plan for its requirements.

Should I bother with Galaxy Store or Amazon Appstore?

If your audience fits. Galaxy Store is on Samsung phones, and Amazon Appstore now targets Fire devices only, which suits media, kids and casual apps. They are extra reach for limited work, not a replacement for Play.

How long until ASO changes show results?

Experiments can show a winner within weeks if you have steady traffic. Search ranking and ratings build over months. Outpost reports progress each week and keeps a receipt for every change.
