Apple ranks on your title, subtitle, keyword field and category, plus how people respond to your app. Outpost rewrites that metadata for you to paste in, keeps Apple's windows on your calendar and builds the web pages that send people to the store.

01 · DISCOVERY
How customers find you
Many iOS users find apps inside the App Store: by searching, browsing editorial stories and lists on the Today, Apps and Games tabs, or seeing an in-app event card. Apple says search ranking combines text relevance (title, subtitle, keyword field, primary category) with behaviour such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Outside the store, people find apps through reviews on Apple-focused sites, recommendations and creators, and land on a product page, which can be a custom page made for that audience.
The buying journey
Search or see a feature → scan the icon, subtitle, rating and first two or three screenshots in the results → open the product page → download (often free, with a trial or in-app purchase) → get asked for a rating at a moment of success. The screenshots in search results do most of the selling.

02 · CHANNELS
Channels, ranked by what matters most
Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.
01
App Store search metadata
Essential
Title, subtitle, the 100-character keyword field and primary category are what Apple's search indexes. Promotional text doesn't affect ranking, so keywords put there do nothing.
02
Screenshots and product page optimization
Essential
Screenshots appear in search results. Product page optimization lets you test up to three alternate icons, screenshot sets or previews against the original for up to 90 days.
03
Custom product pages
High
Up to 70 extra versions of your page, each with its own screenshots, promotional text, link and optional keywords, so a page can appear in search for those keywords.
04
In-app events and Featuring Nominations
High
Event cards show in search and on your product page and can be picked for the Today, Games and Apps tabs. Nominations are how you tell Apple's editors about launches and big updates.
05
Ratings prompts and review replies
Medium
Apple says ratings and reviews can influence search ranking. You can prompt up to three times a year, and every reply notifies the reviewer, who can update their review.
06
Apple-focused press and launch sites
Supporting
Sites like MacStories and 9to5Mac, plus Product Hunt, send interested readers and earn links to a web page that also ranks in Google.

WorksApple App Store
Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).
Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.
AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.
On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.
Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.
Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.
Brazil's ECA Digital (Law 15.211/2025), in force since 17 March 2026, bans loot boxes (paid random virtual items or advantages whose content or usefulness is unknown in advance) in games aimed at children and adolescents or likely to be accessed by them under the game's indicative age rating, and requires reliable age verification, protective defaults and parental tools.
Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.
An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.
App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.
App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID
Common mistakes
Putting keywords in promotional text or repeating words
Apple says promotional text doesn't affect ranking, and asks you not to repeat words from the name, subtitle or category in the keyword field. Both waste characters.
Screenshots that explain the UI instead of the outcome
The first screenshots show in search results. Dense feature tours lose to one clear benefit per frame with real UI.
Prompting for ratings at the wrong moment
You get three prompts a year. Using them on launch or mid-task wastes them. Apple advises asking after a completed action or level.
Nominating for featuring the week before launch
Apple wants at least two weeks' notice and recommends up to three months for wider consideration. Late nominations mostly miss.
07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES
How Outpost helps
Rewrites your App Store title, subtitle and keyword field from your confirmed facts, each within Apple's limit.
Adds advice on screenshot order and the localisation your audience needs, as a kit you paste into App Store Connect.
Keeps Apple's own windows, such as the holiday review slowdown and the award cycles, on your calendar with the lead time each needs.
Builds a web landing page and articles for your app's use cases, so Google and AI assistants can find it outside the App Store.
Tracks your site's search rankings in Search Console and how AI assistants answer for your category each week. Store numbers come from what you share.
Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work
08 · QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
What does App Store search actually rank on?
Apple names text relevance (app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category) and user behaviour (downloads, ratings and reviews, and more). It doesn't publish the weights, and it says search keeps changing.
How do I use the 100-character keyword field well?
Separate terms with commas and no spaces, skip words already in your name, subtitle or category, and favour specific phrases your users type over broad words you can't rank for.
Are custom product pages worth the effort for a small app?
Usually yes, once you know your two or three main audiences. Each page can have its own screenshots and promotional text, and with assigned keywords it can show in search instead of your default page.
How do I get featured by Apple?
Use Featuring Nominations in App Store Connect for launches, new content and updates. Give at least two weeks' notice, up to three months for wider consideration. Featuring is never guaranteed.
Can I A/B test my App Store page?
Yes. Product page optimization tests up to three alternate versions of icons, screenshots and previews against your original, one test at a time, for up to 90 days.
How long until ASO changes show results?
Metadata changes take effect with the next approved version, and ranking moves can take weeks to settle. Ratings and conversion improvements build over months, so Outpost reports trends, not single days.
