SaaSPre-launch startups playbook

Launch day should be the second time people hear about you

Most launch platforms only feature products people can use today, so the weeks before launch are for beta users, feedback and plumbing: indexing, analytics and a page that converts. Outpost's $49 Runway plan is built for this stage.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Before launch, early users come from places built for trying unfinished products: BetaList, r/AlphaAndBetaUsers, TestFlight public links for iOS, Google Play closed tests, the founder's own network, and the communities where the target user already complains about the problem. Search barely helps yet, but it takes time to start, so the site should be indexed well before launch.

The buying journey

Beta users join out of curiosity or because the problem hurts. They tolerate rough edges in exchange for access and influence. The goal is not signups but activated testers who give feedback and later become paying customers, references and launch-day supporters.

What founders aim for

  • Recruit 20 to 100 testers who match the target customer
  • Get the site indexed and measured before launch
  • Collect feedback and testimonials to use on launch day
  • Line up a launch sequence across Product Hunt, Show HN and directories
  • Meet store testing rules (TestFlight review, Play closed test) in time

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Beta platforms

    Essential

BetaList features unreleased, invite-only or just-launched startups, up to twice (once pre-launch, once at launch). It is paid and rejects template landing pages, so it rewards a real product page. r/AlphaAndBetaUsers is free but requires a testable product.

  2. Store beta programs

    Essential

TestFlight public links can take up to 10,000 external testers. On Android, new personal developer accounts must run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days before production access, so tester recruiting is a requirement there, not a nice-to-have.

  3. Problem communities

    High

The best testers are people already complaining about the problem in their own subreddits, forums and Slack groups. Ask for feedback there within the rules, not for signups.

  4. Indexing and measurement setup

    High

Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow cost nothing and take minutes. Setting them up before launch means launch-day pages and links are discovered and measured from the first day.

  5. Launch sequencing

    Medium

Product Hunt only features products that are currently available (waitlisted products are not featured unless access is immediate), and Show HN treats sign-up pages as off-topic. Plan the public launch for when people can actually use the product.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Plumbing and a real page

    • Replace any template landing page with a page that shows the product, the problem and who it is for
    • Verify Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and set up IndexNow
    • Add privacy-friendly analytics and an onboarding event to measure activation
    • Write a short tester brief: what to try, what feedback you want, what testers get
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Recruit testers

    • Post on r/AlphaAndBetaUsers with the right platform tag and a testable build
    • Open a TestFlight public link or Google Play closed test and track active testers
    • Ask for feedback in two problem communities, following their rules
    • Submit to BetaList if the product page meets its requirements
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Learn and fix

    • Run five 20-minute calls with testers who used the product twice
    • Fix the top onboarding blocker and tell testers it is fixed
    • Ask happy testers for a quote and permission to use their name
    • Draft the Product Hunt page, the Show HN post and the directory descriptions
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Launch readiness

    • Open access fully so launch platforms can feature the product
    • Create company profiles (Crunchbase, LinkedIn) and list on directories that accept live products
    • Pick launch dates for Product Hunt, Show HN and one small launch platform, spaced apart
    • Email testers with the launch date and how they can help, without asking for votes

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Collecting emails instead of testers

A waitlist with no product to try produces names, not feedback. Many places reject waitlist-only pages: Product Hunt does not feature waitlisted products, Show HN treats sign-up pages as off-topic, and SaaSHub rejects waitlist landing pages. Give people something to use.

  2. Leaving indexing until launch day

Search engines need time to discover and trust a new domain. Verify Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and set up IndexNow weeks before launch so launch-day attention leads to indexed pages.

  3. Underestimating store testing rules

New personal Google Play accounts must keep at least 12 testers opted in for 14 days in a row before production access, and the first TestFlight build needs beta review. Start recruiting early.

  4. Using a template landing page

BetaList rejects template and default-theme pages, and visitors notice them too. A plain page with real screenshots and a specific promise beats a polished template that could be any startup.

  5. Asking testers to upvote

Product Hunt, Peerlist and Hacker News all treat vote-asking as manipulation. Ask testers for honest comments and feedback instead.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Runway ($49) is built for pre-launch: it audits your landing page, hosts a coming-soon page with an email-confirmed waitlist and helps you connect Search Console before you need it

  • Prepares BetaList and r/AlphaAndBetaUsers posts that meet each platform's rules, so they are not rejected; you press submit

  • Drafts early-feedback posts for communities such as r/roastmystartup and r/SideProject, within each one's rules, for you to post

  • Builds a dated launch sequence across Product Hunt, Show HN and small launch platforms, timed for when the product is usable

  • Keeps a receipt for every submission and setup step, so you can see exactly what is ready before launch day

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How many beta users do I need?

Enough active ones to see patterns. A small group of testers who use the product more than once usually teaches you more than a long list of waitlist emails. On Google Play, new personal accounts need at least 12 testers opted in for 14 days in a row before production access.

Is BetaList worth it?

It can be if your product is a real tech startup in beta or just launched and your page is not a template. All submissions are paid, with a refund if you are not selected, and you can be featured once pre-launch and once at launch.

Should I launch on Product Hunt before the product is ready?

No. Product Hunt features only products that are currently available and does not feature waitlisted products unless access is immediate. Use the pre-launch period to prepare the draft and gather feedback, then launch when people can use the product.

Why set up SEO before I have users?

Search takes months to build. Verifying Search Console and Bing, submitting a sitemap and setting up IndexNow are free, take minutes, and mean the attention you get at launch becomes indexed pages instead of a spike that disappears.

What should the $49 Runway plan cover?

Runway is for founders before launch: a site audit, indexing setup, a beta recruitment plan, and submissions to platforms that accept pre-launch products. Everything is logged with receipts so you know what is done.

Where do I find testers who match my customer?

Where your customer already talks about the problem: their profession's subreddit, forum or Slack. General tester communities are good for finding bugs. Problem communities are good for knowing whether the product matters.
