SaaSDesign tools playbook

Design tools spread when designers can see the output

Designers find tools in Figma Community, in a colleague's file, in a shot on Dribbble or a launch-day post. Outpost plans the listings, showcase content and free resources that put your tool in front of them, and logs each step with a receipt.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Much discovery happens inside the design tool itself: designers search Figma Community for plugins, widgets and files, and often adopt a tool because a teammate's file already uses it. Outside the tool, the work is visual: shots on Dribbble and Behance, short screen recordings on X, LinkedIn and YouTube, and design aggregators such as Sidebar and Designer News. Standalone tools also get a large share of first users from launch platforms where designers and developers browse, such as Product Hunt and Peerlist.

The buying journey

Sees an output they like (a shot, a file, a recording) -> installs a free plugin or duplicates a community file -> uses it on a real project -> shares the file with a teammate, who now sees the tool too -> the team pays when it becomes part of their system, often when a lead or design-ops person standardizes it.

What SaaS teams aim for

  • Installs and repeat use of a Figma plugin or widget
  • Free resources (UI kits, templates) that bring designers onto your email list
  • A strong launch day on Product Hunt and designer-heavy platforms
  • Showcase content that shows real output, not marketing graphics
  • Team upgrades that come from files spreading inside companies

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Figma Community plugins, widgets and files

    Essential

Figma Community is a discovery surface inside the tool. Figma reviews submissions and rejects plugins that crash, recreate core Figma functionality, work around paid features or include ads, and it generally does not approve general-purpose AI chat plugins.

  2. Free resources (UI kits, templates, icon sets)

    High

Designers search for and share free resources. A genuinely useful file that uses your tool is both a lead magnet and a demo.

  3. Showcase sites and short recordings

    High

Dribbble, Behance and short screen recordings show output, which is what designers judge. A ten-second before-and-after communicates more than a feature list.

  4. Launch platforms

    High

Product Hunt and Peerlist reach designers and developers on launch day. Both require the founder to post from a personal account and forbid asking for upvotes.

  5. Design aggregators and newsletters

    Medium

Sidebar and Designer News curate design links; a useful article or resource can be picked up, while a press-release style post will not.

  6. Tutorial videos

    Medium

Designers learn workflows from YouTube. A practical tutorial that solves a real problem with your tool keeps bringing users after launch week.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Listing and positioning

    • Audit the site and the Figma Community listing for a clear one-line outcome and real screenshots
    • Fix edge cases Figma's publishing checklist calls out (no selection, missing fonts, large files) before a re-review
    • Set up Search Console and submit the sitemap
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

A free resource that demos the tool

    • Publish a free UI kit or template file built with the tool, on Figma Community and on your site
    • Write a landing page for the resource with an honest description of what is included
    • Record three short before-and-after clips for X, LinkedIn and Dribbble
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Launch week

    • Prepare the Product Hunt draft, gallery and maker comment for the founder to post personally
    • Prepare a Peerlist Launchpad project for the following Monday window
    • Submit the tool to AlternativeTo against the tools it replaces
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Tutorials and follow-through

    • Publish one tutorial article and video solving a specific workflow problem
    • Share the tutorial with Sidebar and Designer News as a resource, not an ad
    • Review installs, repeat use and upgrades by source and pick next month's resource

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Marketing graphics instead of real output

Designers distrust polished mockups that the tool did not make. Show actual results, including the rough edges.

  2. Shipping a plugin that breaks on real files

Figma's own checklist warns about missing fonts, large documents and multiplayer edits. A plugin that fails on a real project gets uninstalled and can be removed from Community.

  3. Treating Figma Community as an ad slot

Figma rejects plugins with advertisements and monetization in 'poor taste'. Monetize through a clear paid tier described in the listing, not by interrupting the user.

  4. Asking for upvotes on launch day

Product Hunt and Peerlist both forbid vote requests. Ask people to try the tool and leave honest feedback instead.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Drafts your Figma Community listing copy so the outcome is clear in one line, and audits your site's titles and descriptions

  • Plans and publishes free resources and tutorials that double as demos, with landing pages built to rank over time

  • Prepares Product Hunt and Peerlist launch drafts for the founder to post from a personal account, as both platforms require

  • Prepares AlternativeTo and other design-software directory listings for you to submit, with a receipt for every one

  • Tracks AI-assistant answers for prompts like 'best Figma plugin for X' and reports when your tool appears

  • Measures clicks by source next to the installs and upgrades you share, so you know which resources drive paid use

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How do people find Figma plugins?

Mostly through Figma Community search, through files that already use a plugin, and through recommendations and tutorials. A clear name, a specific description and real screenshots matter more than clever branding.

Can we charge for a Figma plugin?

Figma allows plugins to direct users to a third party for payment, and any extra payments or accounts must be clear in the description. It rejects plugins with ads or monetization it considers in poor taste. Check Figma's current creator terms before you build pricing.

Will Figma approve an AI plugin?

It depends on what it does. Figma's review guidelines say it generally does not approve general-purpose AI chat interfaces or plugins that expose an MCP server. A focused AI feature that solves a design task is a different case.

Is Product Hunt still worth it for design tools?

It can bring a burst of designers and early feedback on day one. Treat it as one launch moment, not a growth strategy, and make sure people can try the tool immediately.

How long until tutorials and resources bring steady traffic?

Usually a few months. Free resources can spread faster through shares, while search traffic to tutorials builds slowly as pages earn links.

Do we need to pay for Dribbble or ads?

No. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend. Free accounts on showcase sites and free listings are enough to start.
