01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Users see an edit they want, like a film look, a clean background removal or a transition in a short video, and go looking for how to make it: in the store, on YouTube and TikTok ('how to get this filter'), or on Google for the technique. Photographers compare tools on alternatives sites and in editing and film-photography communities. Presets and templates shared by creators carry the app's name with them.

The buying journey

The store page is judged in seconds, mostly on the icon and the first screenshots, which Apple shows in search results when there's no preview video. One edit in the first session decides whether the app stays. The paywall usually sits at premium filters, AI tools or export quality. Many mobile users choose based on one feature they saw in a video.

What app makers aim for

  • Raise store conversion with screenshots and previews that show results
  • Rank for technique searches ('remove background', 'film look') on Google and YouTube
  • Get presets or templates shared widely, with the app's name attached
  • Win 'alternative to' searches from users leaving the big editors
  • Build a steady stream of creator-made demos

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Store visuals and A/B tests

    Essential

Apple's product page optimization tests up to three alternate sets of icons, screenshots and previews for up to 90 days, at no cost. Custom product pages (up to 70) let 'background remover' and 'film filter' searchers each see the result they came for.

  2. Short-form video (TikTok, Reels, Shorts)

    Essential

Editing apps are shown, not described. A five-second before-and-after or a 'how I made this' clip is the native format, and it shows the app actually working.

  3. Technique tutorials (SEO and YouTube)

    High

'How to blur a background on iPhone' and similar questions get searched all year. A tutorial that solves the problem in your app turns a technique search into a trial.

  4. Photography and editing communities

    Medium

Post-processing and film-photography communities are critique-driven. Sharing a technique or a free preset pack as the disclosed maker works. Polished ads don't.

  5. Shareable presets and templates

    Medium

A preset or template that creators share travels with your app's name. Give each one a public page that shows the result and links to the app.

  6. Alternatives directories

    Supporting

Users leaving subscription-heavy editors search for alternatives. Being listed against the tools they're leaving catches that intent.

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

One-time purchase

  • WorksMac App Store

Non-subscription apps on Apple stores may offer a free time-limited trial only through a free (Tier 0) non-consumable IAP named 'XX-day Trial', disclosing its length and later charges before it starts.

  • WorksMac App Store

Mac App Store apps must be sandboxed and self-contained, may not show a license screen, require license keys or use their own copy protection, and must update only through the Mac App Store.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Screenshots of the interface instead of results

Apple shows the first one to three screenshots in search results when there's no preview video. Sliders and toolbars don't sell an editor. A striking before-and-after does.

  2. Never testing visuals

Product page optimization is free and runs for up to 90 days. Guessing which screenshots convert, when you can test them, leaves installs on the table.

  3. Showing results the app can't reproduce

Hero images polished in another tool, or AI output that typical users won't get, lead to bad reviews. Apple also forbids unverifiable product claims in metadata such as subtitles.

  4. Using other people's photos without permission

Marketing with photos you don't have rights to invites takedowns and trust problems. Use your own images, licensed stock or creator work with written permission.

  5. Chasing 'photo editor' head-on

The generic term is dominated by the biggest apps. Technique-specific and use-case searches are where a smaller editor can rank.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Runs before-and-after experiments on your website pages around the edits you want to be known for, and reports what changed.

  • Drafts technique tutorials, and logs every publish with a receipt and indexing status once Search Console is connected.

  • Gives every short-form video a tracked link and counts its clicks. You or your creators record them.

  • Finds YouTube creators already covering your technique and drafts outreach, with every message you send recorded.

  • Tracks whether AI assistants recommend your app for prompts like 'best free app to remove photo backgrounds'.

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How do we know which screenshots convert?

Test them. Apple's product page optimization compares up to three alternate sets of icons, screenshots and previews for up to 90 days. If you test alternate icons, they must be in the app binary. Screenshot-only tests can be submitted without a new app version.

How many custom product pages should we build?

Start with one or two for your strongest use cases, like background removal or film looks, each with matching keywords. Apple allows up to 70, but each one needs real, distinct visuals to be worth having.

Do we need paid TikTok or Instagram ads?

No. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend. Organic before-and-after clips and creator demos are the native format for this category, and they compound when presets get shared.

Can we use AI-generated images in our store screenshots?

Only if they're honest examples of what the app produces for typical users. Showing results users can't get leads to bad reviews and refunds.

Are tutorials worth it when people use TikTok to learn?

Yes. Many technique questions still start on Google or YouTube, and a written tutorial with clear steps keeps ranking for months. Make one technique into both a written page and a short video.

How long until this shows results?

Store tests give a read within weeks, though they can run up to 90 days. Tutorials and preset pages build over months. Viral clips are a bonus, not a plan.
