01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Mac software has its own ecosystem. Mainstream users search the Mac App Store; power users browse r/macapps, the Mac Power Users forum and curated GitHub lists like awesome-mac, install from Homebrew, and read MacStories and 9to5Mac. Setapp subscribers discover apps inside the Setapp catalog, and bundles like BundleHunt reach bargain hunters. Menu bar utilities have their own niche directory, MacMenuBar.

The buying journey

Mac buyers tend to try before they pay: a free trial or freemium tier from the developer's site or the store, a check of reviews and of whether the app feels native, then a purchase or subscription. Power users care about whether the app is signed and notarized, whether it is available through Homebrew, and whether the developer has a track record. Price objections are common, which is why one-time licences, Setapp inclusion and bundles all play a role.

What software makers aim for

  • Be present in both the Mac App Store and direct distribution with a signed, notarized build
  • Earn a recommendation or app pick from Mac press and communities
  • Qualify for Homebrew Cask and curated lists that power users check
  • Decide whether Setapp, bundles or direct sales fit the pricing model
  • Turn macOS release season into a reason to be discovered

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Mac App Store

    Essential

The default discovery path for less technical buyers, with search, editorial and Apple's payment handling. Membership is US$99 a year and the Small Business Program cuts commission to 15% at or below $1M in proceeds, but sandboxing rules exclude some utilities.

  2. Direct distribution plus Homebrew Cask

    High

Many Mac power users install from the developer's site or with Homebrew. A cask needs a Developer ID-signed, notarized app that passes Gatekeeper and notability thresholds (75 stars, or 225 for a self-submission), so it fits apps with a public repo or track record.

  3. r/macapps and Mac Power Users forum

    High

These are where Mac recommendations happen. r/macapps allows self-promotion once every 30 days with disclosure and a set post format; apps without a public track record go to the monthly App Pile megathread.

  4. Mac press and newsletters

    Medium

MacStories has run an app pick in nearly every issue of MacStories Weekly since 2015, and 9to5Mac runs a tips line. A specific, well-made pitch around a new release or a clever workflow can land coverage that keeps sending users.

  5. Curated lists and niche directories

    Medium

awesome-mac on GitHub accepts pull requests with a one-sentence description, and MacMenuBar catalogs menu bar apps. These are quiet but durable sources of qualified visitors.

  6. Setapp and bundles

    Supporting

Setapp reaches subscribers who would not buy a single app; it curates for mature apps that fill category gaps. Bundles bring volume at deep discounts, so they suit apps that monetize through upgrades or later versions.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Distribution readiness

    • Confirm the direct build is Developer ID-signed and notarized so Gatekeeper does not block first launch
    • Audit the Mac App Store listing: title, subtitle, keywords, screenshots and whether the description explains the native details Mac users look for
    • Check eligibility for Homebrew Cask against star and repo-age thresholds
    • Decide which pricing paths to pursue: store, direct, Setapp application or bundles
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Directories and lists

    • Submit the free MacUpdate listing
    • Open a pull request to awesome-mac in the right category with a one-sentence description
    • Submit to MacMenuBar if the app lives in the menu bar
    • Create or update the AlternativeTo listing against the Mac apps you replace
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Community

    • Read the current r/macapps rules and draft a post in the required name, problem, comparison and pricing format, disclosing that you are the developer
    • Join the Mac Power Users forum conversation in relevant threads without advertising
    • Collect the questions people ask and add answers to the website FAQ
    • If eligible, submit the Homebrew cask
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Press and launch

    • Pitch MacStories and the 9to5Mac tips line with a specific story (new macOS feature support, a workflow, a design decision)
    • Plan a Product Hunt or Show HN launch if the app has a technical angle
    • Apply to Setapp if the app is mature and fills a gap in its catalog
    • Compare referral traffic from each listing and set the next month's focus

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Shipping an unsigned or un-notarized direct build

Gatekeeper checks for a Developer ID signature on apps from outside the Mac App Store, and notarization tells it the app passed Apple's scan. Skipping this blocks first launch for most users and rules out Homebrew Cask.

  2. Treating r/macapps like an ad board

The community limits self-promotion to once every 30 days, requires disclosure and a set post format, and sends apps without a public track record to the App Pile megathread. Posts that ignore this get removed.

  3. Applying to Homebrew too early

Casks have notability thresholds and a repo under 30 days old is normally not eligible. A rejected cask is a wasted afternoon; build the track record first.

  4. Generic pitches to Mac press

Mac writers get many 'we launched' emails. Pitches that explain what is native, new or clever about the app, ideally tied to the latest macOS release, are the ones that get read.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Lays out each Mac channel's rules (notarization, Homebrew notability, r/macapps format, Setapp curation) before anything is submitted

  • Prepares MacUpdate, awesome-mac, MacMenuBar and AlternativeTo listings where you qualify, for you to submit, and records a receipt with the live URL for each

  • Drafts an r/macapps post in the required format with disclosure, timed to respect the 30-day limit, for you to post

  • Writes macOS how-to pages that solve the problem your app solves, so you rank for problem searches as well as app searches

  • Drafts tailored pitches to MacStories and 9to5Mac around real news such as new macOS feature support, for you to send

  • Monitors AI-assistant answers to 'best Mac app for [task]' and shows which sources they rely on

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Mac App Store, direct sales or both?

Many Mac developers do both: the store for discovery and mainstream buyers, direct sales for power users and features the sandbox does not allow. Direct builds must be Developer ID-signed and notarized either way.

Is Setapp worth it?

It can reach subscribers who would not buy your app alone, and it pays by usage rather than per sale. Setapp curates for mature apps that fill gaps in its catalog, so it suits established apps more than brand-new ones.

How do we get into Homebrew Cask?

The app must pass Gatekeeper without workarounds, download from you or a source you endorse, and meet notability thresholds: 30 forks, 30 watchers or 75 stars, or 90, 90 or 225 for a self-submission. Repos under 30 days old are normally not eligible.

Can we post our app on r/macapps?

Yes, within the rules: at most once every 30 days, with your relationship to the app disclosed and a post covering the name, problem, comparison, pricing and link. Apps without a public track record go into the monthly App Pile megathread.

Do bundles hurt the brand?

They sell licences at deep discounts, so they suit apps that earn from upgrades, add-ons or later versions. If your whole business is one-time sales at full price, a bundle can undercut it.

How long does this take to show results?

Directory listings and community posts can bring visitors within days. Press is unpredictable. SEO pages for macOS problems take months to compound. Outpost reports each separately so you can see what is working.
