Desktop softwareWindows software playbook

On Windows, the first marketing problem is the warning screen.

Outpost explains the signing options that build trust, then prepares your winget, Chocolatey, Scoop, Microsoft Store and download-site listings for you to submit. Every submission comes with a receipt, and none of it needs an ad budget.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Windows users find software in three ways. Technical users install from package managers: winget ships with modern Windows, and Chocolatey and Scoop have loyal followings. Mainstream users search the Microsoft Store or the web for a problem ('how to batch rename files on Windows 11') and land on a download site such as Softpedia, MajorGeeks or TechSpot. Enthusiasts follow Neowin and r/software for new tools.

The buying journey

Users search a problem, pick a tool from a download site, a forum answer or the Store, and run the installer. Trust decides the next ten seconds: an unknown publisher or a SmartScreen warning makes many people stop. Users who get past install try the free tier or trial, and convert if the tool saves them time. Power users check whether it installs silently through a package manager, which also makes it easy to roll out across machines.

What software makers aim for

  • Get past SmartScreen and 'unknown publisher' warnings without paying for reputation you cannot buy
  • Be installable with one command through winget, Chocolatey or Scoop
  • List in the Microsoft Store now that individual and company accounts have no registration fee
  • Earn editorial listings on long-running download sites
  • Rank for 'how to do X on Windows' problem searches

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Package managers (winget, Chocolatey, Scoop)

    Essential

Power users and IT admins install this way, and listings also make you discoverable through community search tools. winget needs a silent installer at an official, versioned URL; Chocolatey needs distribution rights; Scoop Extras wants an issue opened first.

  2. Microsoft Store

    High

Registration through storedeveloper.microsoft.com has no fee for individuals or companies, MSIX packages are re-signed by the Store for free, and apps using their own commerce keep 100% of revenue. It also gives a trusted install path for non-technical users.

  3. Problem-solution SEO

    High

People search the problem, not the product. Pages that solve 'how to do X on Windows 11' and show your tool as one option rank and convert over months.

  4. Download sites

    Medium

Softpedia, MajorGeeks, TechSpot and Uptodown still rank for software searches. MajorGeeks tests submissions in a VM and with VirusTotal and only lists software that merits four stars, so a listing is a trust signal as well as traffic.

  5. Windows communities and news

    Medium

r/software and r/windows answer 'is there a tool for X' questions every day, and Neowin covers newsworthy releases. Both reward a useful tool with a clear explanation.

  6. AlternativeTo

    Supporting

Windows users replacing an abandoned or paid tool look there first, and the listing ties you to the tool you replace.

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Trust first

    • Decide on signing: MSIX through the Store (signed for free) or an OV certificate or Azure Artifact Signing for MSI and EXE installers
    • Make sure the installer runs silently and lives at a stable, versioned HTTPS URL
    • Keep publisher name, signature and timestamp consistent across releases so SmartScreen reputation accrues
    • Audit the download page: clear publisher name, checksums, release notes and system requirements
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Package managers

    • Submit a winget manifest, one version per pull request
    • Publish a Chocolatey package that downloads from the official URL if you do not have redistribution rights
    • Open an issue on Scoop Extras to ask whether the app fits before writing the manifest
    • Add install commands for each package manager to the website
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Store and download sites

    • Register through storedeveloper.microsoft.com and submit the first Store listing by hand, including the age-rating questionnaire
    • Email the MajorGeeks editors with a clean, tested build
    • Submit to Softpedia, TechSpot Downloads and Uptodown
    • Create or update the AlternativeTo listing
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Search and community

    • Publish two problem-solution pages for the top tasks your tool handles on Windows 11
    • Answer relevant 'is there a tool for' threads on r/software and r/windows where rules allow, disclosing that you built it
    • Send Neowin a tip only if the release is genuinely newsworthy
    • Check which listings sent installs and which still show SmartScreen complaints

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Buying an EV certificate to skip SmartScreen

SmartScreen judges both the publisher and each file hash by their clean download history. Reports from signing vendors say EV certificates no longer grant immediate reputation, so an OV certificate or Store signing can be just as good. Consistency across releases matters more.

  2. Installers that cannot run silently

winget requires a silent install, and Chocolatey expects one by default. An installer that needs clicks locks you out of the channels power users trust most.

  3. Bundled offers and adware

winget rejects potentially unwanted software, Chocolatey prohibits unrelated adware, and download-site editors check with VirusTotal. One bundled toolbar can get you delisted everywhere.

  4. Re-signing or changing builds after release

A new hash starts with no reputation. Changing the binary after signing, or shipping many tiny builds, keeps resetting the warning users see.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Lays out the trust signals Windows users and SmartScreen look for on your download page, and the signing options and costs before you buy anything

  • Prepares winget, Chocolatey and Scoop entries that meet each repository's rules for you to open, with a receipt once you paste the merged pull request or package page

  • Walks through Microsoft Store registration via storedeveloper.microsoft.com and prepares the listing for your first manual submission

  • Prepares MajorGeeks, Softpedia, TechSpot and Uptodown listings for you to submit and tracks which ones go live

  • Writes 'how to do X on Windows 11' pages that rank for the problems your tool solves

  • Tracks 'is [app] safe' searches in Search Console and AI-assistant answers, so a false-positive scare shows up early

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost anything to publish on the Microsoft Store?

Not in the new flow. Registration through storedeveloper.microsoft.com has no fee for individual or company accounts. Apps that use their own payments keep 100%; Microsoft takes 15% from apps that use its commerce.

How do we stop the SmartScreen warning?

There is no switch. SmartScreen builds reputation from the publisher's certificate and each file's clean install history, and there is no published threshold. Sign consistently, avoid changing binaries after release, and report false positives to Microsoft Security Intelligence.

Do we need code signing at all for winget?

winget's policies do not mention signing, but unsigned installers still trigger SmartScreen for users. Store MSIX packages are signed for free; for MSI and EXE, an OV certificate or Azure Artifact Signing is the usual route.

Are download sites still worth it?

Some are. Curated sites that test submissions, like MajorGeeks, act as a trust signal and still rank for software searches. Avoid sites that wrap your installer in their own downloader.

Which package manager should we start with?

winget, because it ships with modern Windows. Add Chocolatey for IT and power-user audiences, and Scoop if your app suits portable installs. All three are free.

How long until we see results?

Package manager and directory listings can produce installs within weeks. Problem-solution SEO takes months to compound. Outpost reports each channel separately so you know which to invest in.
