AppsFitness and workout apps playbook

Fitness apps are chosen in January. They are found in the months before it.

Outpost builds your store presence around the workout people actually search for, prepares your listings where wearable owners browse, and drafts community replies for you to post the right way. Every action comes with a receipt, and the plan works at $0 extra spend.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Most people do not search for 'fitness app'. They search the App Store or Google Play for a modality and a constraint: kettlebell workouts, couch to 5k, a home workout with no equipment, a lifting log. The second big path is the device they already own: Garmin owners browse the Connect IQ store, runners look for apps that sync with Strava, iPhone users expect Apple Health support. The third is trust from people who train: recommendation threads in subreddits like r/bodyweightfitness and r/running, and coaches on YouTube showing a program they use.

The buying journey

A goal triggers a store search, the user compares the top few listings by screenshots, ratings and the first lines of the description, installs the one that looks closest to their routine, and decides inside the free trial whether the plan fits their schedule. Integrations (does it sync my watch, does it write to Apple Health) often decide between two similar apps. Whether someone comes back after the first workout is the real test, so onboarding matters as much as the listing.

What app makers aim for

  • Rank for modality and constraint searches, not the generic word 'fitness'
  • Have the listing, reviews and in-app events in place before the New Year peak
  • Get listed in wearable and platform app directories that match your integrations
  • Turn the trial into a habit so January installs become paying users
  • Build program and exercise content that keeps ranking after January

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. App Store and Google Play optimization

    Essential

Store search is where intent is highest. Title, subtitle and keyword fields should name the modality and the constraint you serve, and Apple's custom product pages let you show a different set of screenshots to a 'home workout' visitor than to a 'strength log' visitor.

  2. Wearable and platform app directories

    High

If you integrate with Garmin, Strava or Apple Health, listing in those ecosystems puts you in front of people who already track workouts. Garmin's Connect IQ store reviews each app before it appears; Strava runs an app directory for API partners.

  3. Training communities on Reddit and Discord

    High

Recommendation threads in modality-specific communities carry more weight than any ad. They reward people who answer questions with real programming knowledge and punish drive-by links, so participation has to come before promotion.

  4. Program and exercise content (SEO)

    Medium

Searches for a specific program or routine are evergreen. A well-made multi-week plan page or an exercise library that links into the app keeps working long after the January peak, but it takes months to rank.

  5. Coaches and fitness creators

    Medium

Trainers who film their own sessions need a tool to hand clients. A free coach account in exchange for honest use converts better than a paid shout-out and costs nothing up front.

  6. Product Hunt and AlternativeTo

    Supporting

Useful for apps with a strong tech angle (open data, a new tracking method, an indie alternative to a big brand), less so for mainstream workout libraries.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

Audit the listing and map modality keywords

    • Audit the current App Store and Google Play listings: title, subtitle, keyword field, first three screenshots, rating and review recency
    • Build a keyword map by modality and constraint (equipment, time, level) and pick the two or three you can realistically rank for
    • Draft new metadata and one custom product page per core use case
    • List every integration you already support (Apple Health, Garmin, Strava, Health Connect) and the directory each one qualifies for
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Directories and integrations

    • Submit or update the Garmin Connect IQ listing if you ship a watch app, with screenshots from the device
    • Apply for the Strava app directory if you use the Strava API, checking the brand guidelines first
    • Add an integrations page to the site that names each supported device and service
    • Create an AlternativeTo listing against the two incumbents your users most often leave
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Content that outlives January

    • Publish one complete program page (for example a beginner kettlebell plan) with the full workout visible, not gated
    • Publish an exercise-library page set for the moves your app demonstrates best
    • Draft an in-app event for a New Year challenge so it is ready to submit well before January
    • Check how AI assistants answer 'best app for [your modality]' and note which sources they cite
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Communities and coaches

    • Read the rules of three modality-specific subreddits and answer programming questions without links
    • Share the free program page where the rules allow resources, disclosing that you make the app
    • Offer five coaches a free coach account and ask for honest feedback, not posts
    • Review store conversion and keyword ranks against week 1 and set the December plan

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Starting the push in January

By the time demand peaks, metadata changes, review counts and in-app events need to be live already. Store changes go through review, so the work belongs in the autumn.

  2. Targeting the word 'fitness'

Broad terms are dominated by the largest brands. A small app wins on a specific modality, level or constraint that the big players describe vaguely.

  3. Health claims you cannot back up

Apple's guideline 1.4.1 requires apps to disclose data and methodology behind health-measurement accuracy claims and rejects apps whose accuracy cannot be validated. Keep marketing copy to what the app demonstrably does.

  4. Using health data for marketing

Apple's guideline 5.1.3 bars using HealthKit and other health, fitness and motion data for advertising or marketing. Retargeting or lookalike audiences built from that data is off the table.

  5. Dropping links in training subreddits

Communities like r/bodyweightfitness exist to discuss training. Link-first posts get removed and remembered; answering questions well is what earns the recommendation later.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Builds a keyword map by modality, equipment and level and rewrites your App Store and Google Play listings to fit it, for you to apply

  • Writes New Year training articles, and you set their dates on the Calendar so they're live and indexed before the peak

  • Prepares the app directories Outpost knows that fit your app for you to submit, with a receipt for each once it's live

  • Writes program and exercise-library articles that rank for routine searches and link into the app, with every claim checked against your confirmed facts

  • Tracks how AI assistants answer 'best app for [your workout]' and which pages they cite, so you know what to publish next

  • Drafts community posts that follow each community's rules and disclose that you make the app, for you to post; nothing is posted as anonymous promotion

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

When should a fitness app start preparing for January?

In the autumn. Metadata updates and in-app events go through store review, reviews take weeks to accumulate, and keyword rankings move slowly. Treat October to December as the build-up and January as the harvest.

Is ASO enough on its own?

It is the foundation, because store search is where most installs start, but it rarely carries a small app alone. Integration directories, community recommendations and program content add discovery paths that do not depend on out-ranking large brands for the same terms.

Can we use Apple Health data to target marketing?

No. Apple's App Review guideline 5.1.3 prohibits using data from HealthKit and other health, fitness and motion APIs for advertising, marketing or data mining beyond improving health management or health research. Outpost's plans do not rely on that data.

Do we need a Garmin or Apple Watch app to benefit from wearable channels?

To appear in the Connect IQ store you need an app built for Garmin devices. Without one, you can still list integrations like Strava or Apple Health sync on your site and in store descriptions, which matters to people choosing between similar apps.

Will fitness subreddits let us promote the app?

Each community sets its own rules, and many limit or ban self-promotion. The reliable approach is to answer questions with real expertise, share free resources where allowed, and always disclose that you build the app.

How fast will program content rank?

Expect months, not weeks. SEO compounds: pages published this autumn are likely to help most next year. Outpost reports progress honestly and does not promise rankings by a date.

Does Outpost buy ads for our app?

No. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend. If you later want paid user acquisition, the keyword and listing work Outpost does makes that spend more efficient, but it is optional.
