AppsRunning and cycling apps playbook

Runners already have Strava and a watch. Fit into that.

Runners and cyclists live in their tracking platform, their watch and their club. Apps grow by connecting to those, showing up when a training block starts, and earning a mention in the group run. Outpost plans and runs that, with a receipt for every action.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Serious runners and cyclists already record activities on a watch or bike computer and share them on platforms like Strava, so new apps are usually found as an add-on: an analysis tool, a training plan, a route planner or a Garmin Connect IQ data field. They search for specific training goals ('sub-4 marathon plan', 'couch to 5k'), ask in r/running, r/AdvancedRunning and r/cycling, and hear about tools from club mates and running YouTubers. Integrations come with rules: Strava does not allow its name in your app name, requires 'Powered by Strava' or 'Compatible with Strava' wording, and only lets you show a user's Strava data to that same user.

The buying journey

Starts a goal (first race, PR attempt, return from injury) -> searches for a plan or tool for that goal, or sees a club mate use it -> checks it connects to their watch and Strava -> tries the free tier during a training block -> pays if the plan or insight changes their training -> recommends it in the club or online.

What app makers aim for

  • Installs that connect a watch or Strava account in the first session
  • Rankings for goal-based searches like race-distance training plans
  • A Garmin Connect IQ listing that brings watch users
  • Mentions in running clubs, subreddits and creator videos
  • Paid conversions during training blocks

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Platform integrations (Strava, Garmin Connect IQ, Apple Health)

    Essential

Runners judge an app by whether it fits their existing setup. Garmin reviews every Connect IQ upload before it appears in the store and asks developers to be very specific in descriptions. Strava's brand rules shape how you can talk about the integration.

  2. Goal-based content and ASO

    Essential

Runners search by goal and distance. Pages and store keywords for specific plans (5k, half marathon, sub-3 marathon, first century ride) match intent directly.

  3. Running and cycling communities

    High

r/running, r/AdvancedRunning, r/cycling and local clubs are where people compare tools. Self-promotion rules are strict, so share useful training insight and disclose that you built the app.

  4. Race-calendar campaigns

    High

Content tied to major races and the start of their training blocks reaches runners when they are choosing a plan.

  5. Running creators and coaches

    Medium

Coaches and YouTube runners shape what tools their audience tries. A free coach account or a plan built with a coach is more credible than a sponsored mention.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Breaking Strava's brand rules

Putting 'Strava' in your app name, using its logo as an icon or implying endorsement is against Strava's guidelines. Use 'Compatible with Strava' or 'Powered by Strava'.

  2. Building a social feed from other people's Strava data

Strava's API agreement only lets you show a user's data to that user, and bars apps that replicate Strava. Plan social features on your own data.

  3. Launching on race weekend

Runners pick plans when a training block starts, months before the race. A launch timed to race day reaches people who are tapering, not shopping.

  4. Using fitness data in ad targeting

App Store guideline 5.1.3 forbids using HealthKit and motion data for advertising or marketing. Keep it out of ad audiences.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits your site's titles, descriptions and integration pages, and checks every claim it drafts against your confirmed facts

  • Writes goal-based training articles, and you set their dates on the Calendar so they're live ahead of major training blocks

  • Rewrites your store copy from your confirmed facts for you to paste in, and prepares the app directories that fit

  • Drafts founder posts and coach outreach for you to send personally, in line with community self-promotion rules

  • Tracks AI-assistant answers for prompts like 'best app for half marathon training'

  • Measures clicks by source next to the installs and conversions you share

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can we call our app 'X for Strava'?

No. Strava's guidelines say you must not use the Strava name in your application name. You can describe the integration as 'Powered by Strava' or 'Compatible with Strava'.

Can our app show friends' Strava activities?

Not from the Strava API. Strava's API agreement says data from a user can only be displayed to that user, even if it is public on Strava. Build social features on data users share with you directly.

Is a Garmin Connect IQ app worth building?

If your users wear Garmin devices, it puts you on their wrist. Garmin reviews every upload and your app will not appear in the store until approved, so plan for that time.

When should we market a marathon training app?

When training blocks begin, which is months before the big spring and autumn races, plus January for new-year goals.

How long until training-plan pages rank?

A few months for most goal-based pages, longer for very competitive terms. Start before the season so pages are established when demand rises.

Does this need paid ads?

No. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend. Integrations, store listings, content and community work are free to start.
