01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Breakdowns send homeowners to the map pack with 'AC repair near me' or 'furnace not working' and they call whoever looks trustworthy and available. Replacements are researched: homeowners compare heat pumps and furnaces, read about rebates and refrigerant changes, get several quotes, and check reviews and manufacturer or ACCA directories. Maintenance-plan customers come mostly from past service calls.

The buying journey

Emergency: search, call two or three companies, book the earliest credible slot. Replacement: research equipment and costs, request two to four in-home quotes, compare on trust, warranty, financing and the tech's explanation. The repair visit is often where the replacement sale starts.

What HVAC companies aim for

  • Booked calls during peak weather in the areas you want to serve
  • More replacement and installation leads from research content
  • Maintenance-agreement signups that smooth out the shoulder seasons
  • Reviews that mention specific techs and systems

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Google Business Profile and map pack

    Essential

No-heat and no-AC searches end here. Service-area setup, accurate hours and after-hours policy, categories for heating and cooling, and fresh photos and reviews all matter.

  2. Seasonal service and replacement pages

    Essential

Separate pages for AC repair, furnace repair, heat pump installation and maintenance, plus honest repair-vs-replace guides, rank for the research that precedes a big-ticket job.

  3. Shoulder-season maintenance campaigns

    High

Email and SMS to past customers in spring and fall fill quiet weeks with tune-ups and maintenance agreements.

  4. Reviews

    High

Google allows review requests via link or QR code but prohibits incentives; reviews that name the tech and the system help both rankings and conversions.

  5. Google Local Services Ads (optional)

    Medium

Pay-per-lead placement above the map pack with the Google Guaranteed badge, which requires background checks, license and insurance. Optional; every Outpost plan works without it.

  6. Manufacturer and association directories

    Supporting

Brand dealer locators and ACCA's Find a Contractor are checked by replacement shoppers and add citations.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Outdated tax-credit pages

Many HVAC sites still promote the federal 25C credit. The IRS says it applies to property placed in service before December 31, 2025. Outdated promises erode trust; point to current utility and state programs.

  2. Refrigerant scare content that's no longer accurate

EPA revised its technology transitions rule in May 2026, allowing systems manufactured or imported before 2025 to keep being installed. Update 'R-410A ban' pages to reflect the current rule.

  3. Going dark in the shoulder seasons

Spring and fall are when maintenance agreements and next-season pages get built. Waiting for the heat wave to start marketing is too late for SEO.

  4. One generic 'HVAC services' page

Heating, cooling, heat pumps and indoor air quality are different searches. A single page can't rank for all of them.

  5. Incentivized reviews

Discounts for reviews are prohibited by Google and covered by the FTC's 2024 rule. Ask every customer the same way.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Writes cooling and heating articles, and you set their dates on the Calendar so they're live months before your peaks

  • Checks every tax-credit and refrigerant claim in what it drafts against the facts you confirm

  • Writes and publishes repair-vs-replace and equipment-comparison guides for your replacement pipeline

  • Audits your website for titles, structured data, mobile setup and broken links, and lists the fixes

  • Tracks AI-search answers for 'best HVAC company in [town]'. Outpost doesn't manage map listings or track calls

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

When should HVAC companies publish seasonal content?

Months ahead: cooling pages in late winter, heating pages in late summer. New pages take time to be crawled and ranked, and peak weeks are too late.

Is the federal heat pump tax credit still available?

The IRS lists the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) for property placed in service before December 31, 2025. Point customers to current utility and state programs, and check with a tax professional.

Can contractors still install R-410A systems?

EPA's May 2026 rule revision allows residential systems manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025 to continue to be installed. Check the current rule text for your equipment.

How long does HVAC SEO take?

Profile and review work can help within weeks; service and replacement pages usually take months and compound across seasons. Expect your second peak season to be much stronger than your first.

Do I need Local Services Ads?

No. They are an optional pay-per-lead channel. Every Outpost plan works without ad spend.

Is Outpost available for HVAC companies today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For an HVAC company, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage map listings or call tracking. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
