01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Homeowners mostly search when something is already wrong: a leak, missing shingles or hail damage. They search on Google and Maps, check reviews and photos, ask neighbours (often on Nextdoor), and may check a manufacturer's contractor locator or the BBB. After a big storm, demand spikes and so do door-to-door contractors, so trust signals carry extra weight.

The buying journey

An urgent search or a referral, then a scan of the Maps results for rating, review count, photos and distance, a call to two or three roofers, an inspection and quote, often an insurance claim, then the job. For planned replacements, people compare materials and price over weeks.

What roofing companies aim for

  • Show up in the Maps results for repair and replacement searches in the service area
  • Build a steady flow of genuine reviews after every job
  • Be ready with content and capacity when a storm hits
  • Win planned replacement jobs with helpful material and cost pages

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Google Business Profile

    Essential

The Maps pack is where urgent roofing searches end. A complete, accurate profile with the real business name, service area and photos of real jobs is the base of everything else.

  2. Reviews

    Essential

Homeowners read reviews before calling. Asking every customer is allowed; incentives, gating and fake reviews break Google's policy and the FTC's rule.

  3. Service and service-area pages

    High

Real pages for repair, replacement, materials and the towns you actually serve, with local job photos, help you rank beyond the Maps pack.

  4. Storm and insurance content

    Medium

Clear pages on hail damage, emergency tarping and the insurance claim process meet homeowners at the moment they need help.

  5. Neighbourhood and trust directories

    Medium

Nextdoor recommendations, the BBB, Apple Business, Bing Places and manufacturer locators back up the Google profile.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Stuffing keywords into the business name

Google's guidelines say the profile name must match the real-world name and that adding unnecessary information isn't permitted. It can get the profile suspended.

  2. Showing a home address

Service-area businesses should hide their address and set a service area instead.

  3. Only asking happy customers for reviews

Google prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews and offering incentives, and the FTC's rule bans buying reviews and conditioning rewards on sentiment. Ask everyone the same way.

  4. Hundreds of copy-paste city pages

Pages that only swap the city name look like scaled spam. Build pages only for towns you really serve, each with real jobs and details.

  5. Going quiet between storms

Reviews, photos and pages built in the quiet months are what make the phone ring when demand spikes.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits your website's titles, descriptions, structured data, mobile setup and broken links, and lists the fixes in priority order

  • Shows how AI assistants answer the questions homeowners ask about roofing in your area, and which companies they name

  • Writes real service and service-area pages with your job details rather than templated city swaps

  • Writes storm-damage and insurance-claim articles, which you place on the Calendar before the season

  • Outpost doesn't manage map listings, review sites or review requests for local businesses; it covers your website, articles and AI answers

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can I put 'Roofing Repair Dallas' in my Google profile name?

No. Google requires the name to match your real-world business name and doesn't permit extra keywords. Adding them risks suspension.

Is it okay to ask every customer for a review?

Yes, on Google. What's not allowed is offering incentives, only asking happy customers or posting fake reviews. Yelp is different: it asks businesses not to request reviews at all.

Do service-area pages still work?

Yes, when each page is genuinely about that area: jobs you did there, local conditions, permits. Templated pages that only swap the city name are the pattern Google treats as spam.

Do I need Google Local Services Ads?

No. They are paid and can help, but a strong profile, reviews and good pages work at $0 extra spend. Decide on ads after the free basics are in place.

How long until SEO brings calls?

Profile fixes and reviews can help within weeks; pages that rank organically usually take months to build up. It compounds, so starting before storm season matters.

Does Outpost work for roofers today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For a roofer, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage map listings or review requests. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
