Local businessesPlumbers playbook

Win the 2 a.m. burst pipe and the planned water heater swap

Plumbing demand splits into panic searches that go to whoever shows up in the map pack and answers the phone, and researched jobs where homeowners compare reviews, licenses and quotes. Outpost covers the website side of both, at $0 extra spend.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Emergency jobs start on a phone: a homeowner searches 'emergency plumber near me' or 'burst pipe repair' and calls one of the first businesses in Google's local results. Google says those results are ranked on relevance, distance and prominence, and that reviews and mentions across the web feed prominence. Planned work (water heater replacement, repiping, sewer lines) gets researched first: homeowners read how-to and comparison content, ask neighbors on Nextdoor or local Facebook groups, and collect a few quotes.

The buying journey

Emergency: search, scan the map pack for open-now and star ratings, call two or three businesses, book whoever answers and gives a clear arrival window. Planned: research the problem ('tankless vs tank'), shortlist plumbers by reviews and license, request quotes, choose on trust, warranty and price. The same profile and website have to serve both moments.

What plumbing companies aim for

  • More booked calls from the specific towns and neighborhoods you actually want to drive to
  • A bigger share of higher-ticket planned jobs (water heaters, repipes, sewer lines) alongside drain calls
  • Less dependence on shared-lead marketplaces you pay for every month
  • A steady flow of genuine Google reviews that mention the service and the town

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Google Business Profile and the local map pack

    Essential

This is where emergency searches end. Set it up as a service-area business: Google tells plumbers working from home to hide the address and keep the service area within about two hours' drive. Primary category, services, real job photos and review replies all feed relevance and prominence.

  2. Service and service-area pages on your own site

    Essential

One page per service you actually sell, plus town pages only where you have jobs to show (photos, permit notes, common local issues). This is what ranks for 'water heater replacement [town]' and what Google's doorway-page policy separates from city-swapped filler.

  3. Reviews on Google, plus Yelp and Nextdoor visibility

    High

Google allows you to ask customers for reviews with a link or QR code but prohibits incentives. Yelp discourages asking at all, so on Yelp focus on a complete profile and public replies.

  4. Problem-research content for planned jobs

    High

Homeowners searching 'why is my water heater popping' or 'signs of a sewer line break' are weeks away from a big ticket. Clear answers with your photos and a 'when to call a pro' section turn research into quote requests.

  5. Google Local Services Ads (optional, paid per lead)

    Medium

Sits above the map pack for many home-service searches and carries the Google Guaranteed badge, which requires background checks, license and insurance. Optional: every Outpost plan works without it.

  6. Apple Business and Bing Places citations

    Medium

iPhone users searching in Apple Maps and Siri, and Bing-powered assistants, pull from these listings. Consistent name, phone and service area across them supports prominence.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Fix the foundation

    • Audit Google Business Profile: service-area setup, hidden home address, primary category, services list, hours including after-hours policy
    • Check name, phone and website match across Apple Business, Bing Places and Yelp
    • Pull a list of the last 90 days of jobs by town and service to decide which pages deserve to exist
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

Pages for the jobs you want more of

    • Rewrite the 3-5 core service pages (drain cleaning, water heaters, leak repair, sewer line) with real photos, process and pricing guidance
    • Publish 2-3 town pages only for areas with real recent jobs, each with job photos and local specifics
    • Add a clear 'call now' path and arrival-window language to every page
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Reviews and seasonal content

    • Set up a post-job review request using Google's review link, sent to every customer (no incentives, no filtering)
    • Publish one seasonal guide ahead of the coming weather, for example a frozen-pipe prevention page before winter
    • Reply to every existing review, mentioning the service performed
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Planned-job research and measurement

    • Publish one comparison article for a high-ticket job (tank vs tankless, repipe vs repair)
    • Post job photos to the Business Profile and answer local questions in Nextdoor where the business is a member
    • Review calls, direction requests and form fills by page and town; plan the next month's pages from what actually booked

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. City-swapped doorway pages

Fifty pages that differ only by town name are what Google's spam policies call doorway abuse. Publish a town page only when you have real jobs, photos and local detail for it.

  2. Showing a home address

Google tells service-area businesses run from a residence to hide the address and show a service area instead. A visible home address, or a virtual office, puts the profile at risk.

  3. Keyword-stuffed business name

'Best Emergency Plumber Springfield 24/7' instead of your real name breaks Google Business Profile guidelines and can get the listing suspended.

  4. Paying or filtering for reviews

Discounts for five stars, or only sending review links to happy customers, runs against Google's review rules and the FTC's 2024 rule on fake and incentivized reviews.

  5. Renting all of your demand

Paid lead marketplaces stop the day you stop paying. Use them if they work, but build the profile, pages and reviews you own alongside them.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits your website's titles, descriptions, structured data, mobile setup and broken links, and lists the fixes in priority order

  • Plans service articles from what you tell it about your real jobs, so you only publish pages you can back with detail

  • Writes seasonal and problem-research guides, which you place on the Calendar ahead of the weather that drives your calls

  • Connects Search Console and reports which articles earn impressions and clicks by town

  • Tracks whether AI assistants name you for 'best plumber in [town]' style questions

  • Outpost doesn't manage map listings or review sites, or track calls; it covers your website, articles and AI answers

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take for a plumbing company?

Profile fixes and new reviews can change map-pack visibility within weeks, but service and town pages usually take months to earn steady rankings, and results compound as reviews and pages accumulate. Nobody can honestly guarantee the top spot, because distance from the searcher is part of Google's ranking.

Should I make a page for every city I serve?

Only for towns where you have real jobs and something specific to say. Thin pages that swap the city name are treated as doorway pages. A handful of strong town pages beats fifty copies.

I run the business from home. What do I do about the address?

Google's guidance is to hide it and set a service area. The address is still used for verification, but customers see your service area instead.

Do I need Local Services Ads?

No. They are a paid, per-lead option with the Google Guaranteed badge, which requires background checks, license and insurance. Outpost plans work at $0 extra spend; LSA is something you can add if the lead cost makes sense in your market.

Can I ask customers for reviews?

On Google, yes: send everyone the same review link and never offer a discount or gift for it. Yelp discourages asking for reviews at all, so on Yelp just keep the profile complete and reply to reviews.

Is Outpost available for plumbers today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For a plumbing business, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage map listings, review sites or call tracking. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.

What does Outpost cost?

Plans are Runway at $49, Growth at $149, Autopilot at $499 and Agency from $1,499, all with a 90-day growth guarantee. Every plan works without paid ads.
