01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

People find investing apps through store search ('investment apps', 'fractional shares'), comparison and review articles, beginner education searches, referrals from friends, and creators who talk about money. That last channel is tightly regulated: the UK FCA's 2024 guidance on social media promotions makes firms responsible for influencers they work with, and US broker-dealers supervise retail communications under FINRA Rule 2210.

The buying journey

Learn a concept or hear a recommendation, compare a few apps on fees, account types and trust signals, download, then face identity verification and funding, where many drop off. The first deposit and first investment are the real conversion. Trust markers (who holds the money, regulatory status, a real company behind the app) weigh heavily.

What app makers aim for

  • Rank in store search for the account types and features you offer
  • Build an education library that brings in beginners over months
  • Run referral and creator programs that compliance signs off
  • Reduce drop-off between install, verification and first deposit

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Compliant App Store and Google Play optimization

    Essential

Store search is the main entry point. Apple expects investing apps to come from the financial institution providing the service with the right licences, and Google Play requires a Financial features declaration and compliance with each target region's rules.

  2. Education-led content

    Essential

Beginners search for concepts before they choose an app. Clear explainers reviewed by compliance rank over months and attract people who stay, provided they educate rather than promise returns.

  3. Referral program

    Medium

Friends recommending an app is a trusted path in finance. Make terms clear and compliant in each market you operate in.

  4. Comparison and review publishers

    Medium

Many users read independent comparisons before downloading. Accurate fee and feature pages make it easy for writers to describe you correctly.

  5. Creators under financial promotion rules

    Supporting

Finance creators reach beginners, but in the UK promoting a financial product without the right approval can be a criminal offence, and firms stay responsible for creators' promotions. Only work with approved, disclosed, reviewed content.

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Promising or implying returns

Screenshots of big gains and 'grow your money fast' copy are the kind of promotion regulators and app reviewers object to. Show features, costs and risks.

  2. Unapproved finfluencer deals

Under the FCA's social media guidance, firms are responsible for promotions they cause influencers to make. A casual paid post can become a compliance problem.

  3. Publishing from the wrong developer account

Apple expects investing apps to be submitted by the financial institution performing the service, with licences where the app is available. Sort it out before launch.

  4. One message for every market

US, UK and EU rules differ. A campaign that is fine in one market may not be in another; plan per region and keep a review log.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is every social post a financial promotion?

Often, yes. The FCA says the promotion rules apply on every channel, including social media, and each post must comply on its own. In the US, FINRA Rule 2210 governs broker-dealer communications; FINRA proposed changes to its pre-use approval rules in July 2026. Ask your compliance team which rules apply to you.

Can we work with finance influencers?

Only carefully. In the UK, firms are responsible for promotions they cause influencers to make, and promoting without proper approval can be a criminal offence. Use approved, disclosed content reviewed like any other ad.

Do app stores have special rules for investing apps?

Yes. Apple expects investing apps to come from the financial institution performing the service with the right licences, and both stores ban binary options. Google Play requires a Financial features declaration.

Does Outpost publish without our compliance review?

No. For regulated categories Outpost holds every draft for your approval and keeps a receipt of what was approved and published, which also gives you an audit trail.

How long until education content brings users?

Months. Finance is a competitive search space with established publishers; specific, accurate explainers for your niche compound over time.

Which plan fits?

Growth ($149) for an app with a clear niche; Autopilot ($499) if you are publishing education content weekly. All plans work at $0 extra spend.
