01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Students mostly look for a study app when they have a specific exam coming up. They search the App Store or Google for a subject plus 'flashcards', ask classmates, or take a tip from a subject subreddit or study Discord. Serious learners such as medical students, language learners and licensing-exam candidates compare every new tool with Anki and Quizlet, so 'alternative' and comparison searches carry real intent. Teachers and tutors are a second route in: one recommendation can bring a whole class.

The buying journey

Free download, then the student builds or imports a first deck in one sitting. A review habit forms over the first week or two. Payment usually comes when a limit is hit close to an exam (deck count, AI card generation, sync across devices). Many students leave after their exam, so the next exam, annual plans and multi-subject use carry retention.

What app makers aim for

  • Rank for subject-plus-flashcards searches such as 'AP Biology flashcards' or 'MCAT flashcards'
  • Win installs in the weeks before the big exam windows
  • Convert free users before their exam date, not after it
  • Earn recommendations from teachers, tutors and study creators
  • Keep users after one exam by onboarding them to the next

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. App Store and Google Play search (ASO)

    Essential

Most installs start with a store search. Apple gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field, and says not to spend them on plurals, duplicates or the word 'app'. Exam and subject names belong there. Custom product pages (up to 70) can carry their own keywords, so 'MCAT' and 'Spanish vocab' searchers can each land on a page made for them.

  2. Public, indexable deck and study-guide pages

    Essential

A useful public page for one exam or unit, like 'APUSH Unit 3 flashcards', meets searchers where they already look. Every page works as a free trial with an 'open in app' path. Each one needs real, specific content: thin, mass-generated deck pages are the pattern Google treats as low value.

  3. Student communities (study and exam subreddits, study Discords)

    High

Students compare tools in places like r/GetStudying and exam- or program-specific communities. A free deck or an honest write-up of a study method gets traction there. Ad copy gets removed. Read each community's self-promotion rules first and say that you're the maker.

  4. Teachers and tutors

    Medium

One teacher or tutor can bring a whole group of students. A free educator plan or a shared class deck gives them a reason to spread the app on their own.

  5. Short study videos (TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Reels)

    Medium

Study-with-me and study-method videos are a format students already watch. Show the app inside a real study session instead of a feature tour.

  6. Alternatives directories and Product Hunt

    Supporting

AlternativeTo is where people check 'Anki alternatives' and 'Quizlet alternatives'. A Product Hunt launch gives a one-time spike plus a permanent product page.

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Launching into the exam rush

Pages published the week before a big exam rarely rank in time. SEO for an exam window has to start months ahead. Only store tweaks and in-app events work on short notice.

  2. Treating every student as one audience

A high-schooler cramming for finals, a medical student doing daily reviews and an adult learning a language want different things. Separate pages, screenshots and messages for each convert better than one generic pitch.

  3. Dropping links in study subreddits

Study communities remove promotional posts quickly. A free, high-quality deck or a real study-method post with disclosure is what gets shared.

  4. Wasting the keyword field

Apple says plurals of words you already use, category names, duplicates and the word 'app' waste the 100 characters. Spend them on subjects and exam names.

  5. Ignoring the after-exam drop-off

If the app has nothing to offer once the exam is over, every acquisition push resets to zero. Prompt users to set up their next subject or exam before the current one ends.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Writes exam-specific articles, and you set their dates on the Calendar so they're live before demand peaks.

  • Drafts subject- and exam-specific study articles, and logs each publish with a receipt: URL, time and indexing status once Search Console is connected.

  • Rewrites your App Store and Google Play listing (subtitle, keyword field, first screenshots) within Apple's metadata guidance, for you to paste in.

  • Finds live 'best flashcard app for X' threads in study communities and drafts honest, disclosed replies for you to approve.

  • Prepares your AlternativeTo listing and Product Hunt launch for you to post, with copy written for people comparing you to Anki and Quizlet.

  • Tracks whether AI assistants mention your app for prompts like 'best flashcard app for the MCAT'.

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

When should a study app start marketing for exam season?

Earlier than feels necessary. New pages often take weeks to months to be indexed and to rank, so content for a May exam window should be live in winter. Store listing changes and App Store in-app events can be timed closer: Apple lets you promote an event up to 14 days before it starts.

Can a new app compete with Anki and Quizlet?

Not head-on for 'flashcards'. Pick a narrow lane, like one exam, one subject or one kind of learner, and become the best answer to 'Anki alternative for X'. Keep comparison pages accurate and fair, because your readers usually know both tools well.

Do public deck pages help SEO, or is that thin content?

They help when each page has original notes, examples and structure for a real exam or unit. Mass-generated pages that only swap the subject name are the kind of scaled content search engines discount. Outpost drafts fewer, better pages instead of thousands of near-duplicates.

Is Reddit worth it for a study app?

Yes, if you take part instead of advertising. Read each community's rules, say you're the maker, and lead with something useful, like a free deck or a method write-up. One helpful thread can keep sending readers for months.

How fast will we see results?

Store listing changes can show up within weeks. Organic search builds over months and compounds through each exam cycle. Plan for the next exam window, not this weekend.

Do we need an ad budget?

No. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend. The only unavoidable costs are platform fees you already pay, like Apple's $99/year developer membership and Google Play's $25 registration.

Which Outpost plan fits a study app?

Runway ($49) is built for pre-launch, to get pages, listings and directories ready before your first exam window. Growth ($149) fits a live app that wants steady content and community work. Autopilot ($499) suits teams running several subjects or languages at once.
