Gamesitch.io games playbook

itch.io rewards the games people bring traffic to.

Outpost handles the parts of an itch.io release that decide whether anyone sees it: getting indexed, tagging, jam timing, devlogs and the outside traffic itch.io itself won't send you.

Free. We read your public website and show your score, top fixes and competitors.

On this page

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

itch.io players browse by tag, by 'new and popular' and by jam, and many arrive from outside: a Reddit post, a streamer who picked a free game, a collection or a jam results page. The platform doesn't promote games the way Steam's wishlist system does, so outside traffic and community matter. Pages must be public, playable or purchasable and have a cover image to appear in browse and search at all.

The buying journey

A tag browse, jam entry or shared link, then the page itself (cover, GIFs, short description), a browser play or free download, a follow, and sometimes a pay-what-you-want payment or a purchase later. Followers get your devlogs in their feed, which brings them back for updates.

What itch.io developers aim for

  • Get indexed with the right tags
  • Use jams to get the first players and ratings
  • Grow followers who see each devlog
  • Earn pay-what-you-want or paid sales from fans

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Indexing, tags and page quality

    Essential

A page has to be public, playable or purchasable, with a cover image, to be indexed. Accurate tags drive browse, and mis-tagging can get a page delisted.

  2. Game jams

    Essential

Jams bring a built-in audience of players and developers who rate entries, and standout entries get surfaced. They are also the fastest way to build a portfolio and followers.

  3. Devlogs

    High

Devlogs on public pages are indexed even before files are uploaded, followers see them in their feed, and a devlog marked as a major update can be reviewed by staff for a return to new releases.

  4. Outside communities

    High

Reddit (r/playmygame, r/WebGames for browser games, r/IndieGaming), Discord showcases and streamers bring the traffic itch.io won't send on its own.

  5. Creator Day, sales and bundles

    Supporting

Fee-free Creator Days and community bundles give fans a reason to buy and bring attention to a back catalogue.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Paid up front (premium)

  • Poor fititch.io

HTML5 (browser-played) games on itch.io can only take donations; to sell access the project must be set to Downloadable.

  • Strong fititch.io

itch.io offers three pricing modes per project: no payments, $0-or-donate (a suggested donation that can be skipped), and paid with the set price as a minimum that buyers may exceed.

Free with ads

  • Poor fititch.io

itch.io's quality guidelines tell creators to avoid sponsored installers and ads that block play until the player acts, and itch never puts ads on creator pages.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • itch.io

itch.io has no general in-game purchase system; its 'sub-products' API sells add-ons through itch's checkout for redemption on the developer's own site or service.

  • Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade games are played by subscribers without ads or in-app purchases, so an ad- or IAP-funded design does not fit Arcade.

  • Mac App Store

On Apple's stores, credits or in-game currency bought through in-app purchase may not expire, and unlocking features, game levels or in-game currency must use in-app purchase, except where Apple's link-out entitlements (3.1.1(a)) apply or on the United States storefront, where buttons and external links to other purchase methods are allowed (Guideline 3.1.1).

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

Technical eligibility

  • itch.io

Desktop games installed through the itch app need an app manifest if they require redistributables (Visual C++, DirectX, XNA), have multiple launch targets or use the itch.io API; simple single-executable builds work without one.

  • itch.io

itch.io's butler docs say the backend rejects builds above 30GB total uncompressed size; the itch app docs say 'the web limit is 2GB'; a 2020 community thread showed a 1 GB web-upload message, now likely out of date.

  • itch.io

itch.io tags butler uploads by channel name: names containing win/windows, linux, mac/osx or android become Windows, Linux, Mac or Android downloads; architecture cannot be tagged.

  • itch.io

itch.io HTML5 zips should not contain more than 1,000 files after extraction (a default limit; itch.io says to contact them if it doesn't suit the project).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. A page that never gets indexed

Unlisted pages, placeholder pages with nothing to play or buy, and pages without a cover image are not indexed. New sellers' first projects may also wait in a review queue.

  2. Expecting itch.io to promote you

Developers on itch.io's own forums say it plainly: you have to market the game elsewhere. Showing up in new releases for a moment isn't a plan.

  3. Mis-tagging to get more views

itch.io requires accurate platforms, tags and classifications, and mis-tagging can get a page delisted.

  4. Selling an HTML5-only page

Browser-only projects can only take donations. To sell, offer a downloadable build.

  5. Marking every devlog as a major update

Major-update devlogs are reviewed by hand and approval isn't guaranteed. Save the flag for real updates so it keeps its credibility.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Rewrites your itch.io page description and tags, and lists what blocks browse

  • Picks jams that fit your genre and schedule from the published jam dates

  • Writes devlogs on a steady cadence and prepares the itch.io version for you to post, with a receipt for each

  • Drafts posts for game communities such as r/indiegames and pitches to small YouTube creators, for you to post and send, with every post logged

  • Publishes a blog on your own domain so search traffic and AI assistants can find your games beyond itch.io

  • Reports clicks by source next to the views, downloads and follows you share, so you can see which channels bring players

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my game showing in itch.io browse?

It must be Public, have a cover image, and be playable, downloadable or purchasable, and it must follow the quality guidelines. Unlisted or placeholder pages are not indexed, and first projects from new sellers may wait in a review queue.

Do devlogs bump my game back up?

A devlog marked as a major update may be reviewed by staff and can return the game to new releases if approved, but it is manual and not guaranteed. Devlogs are still worth it because followers see them and they are indexed.

Should I charge or use pay-what-you-want?

itch.io lets you set a minimum price, including zero. Many developers release small and jam games as free or pay-what-you-want and charge for larger projects.

What is Creator Day?

A 24-hour event, several times a year, where itch.io waives its platform fee and creators get 100% of sales after taxes and processor fees. No setup is needed.

Are game jams worth it for marketing?

Yes, especially early. Jams give you players, ratings and feedback, and they build a portfolio and followers that carry over to your main project.

Should I also be on Steam?

For larger paid games, often yes, because Steam's wishlist system brings buyers back at launch. itch.io is great for demos, jam games, experiments and a direct relationship with fans.

Should I also launch on the Epic Games Store?

Often yes, as a second store once your Steam page is working, if your game meets Epic's rules: Epic Games Store developers keep 100% of the first US$1M net revenue per product per calendar year (resetting each 1 January from 2026, applied automatically), then 88/12. Epic First Run is an opt-in 6-month Epic-exclusive window paying 100% net revenue; it is open only to new games not previously released on another third-party PC store, and afterwards the standard 100%-of-first-US$1M then 88/12 terms apply. Epic lets games use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases, keeping up to 100% of that revenue. Epic requires multiplayer games sold on other PC stores to support crossplay with them, and products added to its publishing tools after 9 March 2023 to enable Epic achievements if they offer achievements on other PC stores. Listing on Epic Games Store is paid. $100 per product plus local taxes; not refundable but recouped after $1,000 on EGS. Developer keeps 100% of the first $1M net revenue per product per year (resets every Jan 1 from 2026), then 88/12, applied automatically to Epic-processed payments. A separate opt-in 'Epic First Run' gives 100% for a 6-month exclusive. Free alternative: itch.io or the Microsoft Store PC path (free) Epic First Run is irreversible for its six months, so Outpost asks you to confirm it before planning it.
