GamesHorror games playbook

Horror spreads when people watch someone else get scared.

Outpost builds your horror game's campaign around the things that actually move wishlists in this genre: a demo streamers want to play, Steam's horror fest calendar, and communities that hunt for the next scare.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Most horror players meet a new indie game secondhand: a YouTuber or streamer reacts to it, and viewers wishlist it without ever downloading the demo. A demo is effectively how you get creators to play before release, and it keeps getting found after a festival ends. On Steam, the horror tag, Next Fest and the dedicated Scream Fest put games in front of people already browsing for scares.

The buying journey

Clip or stream of a reaction moment, then a visit to the Steam page, a wishlist, often a demo playthrough, then a launch-day or Scream Fest discount email from Steam. Players compare against the subgenre they love (PS1-style, psychological, co-op) more than against horror as a whole.

What studios aim for

  • Get the demo played on camera by creators who cover the right subgenre
  • Grow wishlists ahead of Next Fest and Scream Fest
  • Make the first 60 seconds of the trailer and demo deliver a scare
  • Turn October attention into launch-day visibility

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. YouTube and Twitch horror creators

    Essential

Reaction content is the genre's main word-of-mouth engine; viewers can wishlist straight from a video. A short, polished demo is the asset that makes outreach work.

  2. Steam page, demo, Next Fest and Scream Fest

    Essential

Themed fests are promoted on the Steam homepage and accept Coming Soon titles and demos, so an unreleased game can take part. Wishlists convert into launch and discount emails.

  3. Short clips of scares and atmosphere

    High

A single jump scare or a slow reveal is easy to share on TikTok, Shorts and X, and it doubles as the hook for creator outreach.

  4. Reddit horror and indie communities

    Medium

r/HorrorGaming and r/IndieGaming reward a strong GIF or a playable demo; each sub has its own self-promotion rules.

  5. Press kit and horror-focused outlets

    Supporting

Smaller horror sites and curators cover demos; a clean press kit lets them write without chasing you.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Paid up front (premium)

  • Strong fitSteam Curator Connect

Steam Curator Connect sends up to 5 copies to each of up to 100 curators as licences, which is a lever for paid games; how it applies to free-to-play titles was not verified.

  • Poor fititch.io

HTML5 (browser-played) games on itch.io can only take donations; to sell access the project must be set to Downloadable.

  • Strong fititch.io

itch.io offers three pricing modes per project: no payments, $0-or-donate (a suggested donation that can be skipped), and paid with the set price as a minimum that buyers may exceed.

Free with in-app purchases

  • WorksSteam Next Fest

Free-to-play and Early Access games may enter Steam Next Fest if unreleased, with a public demo, a public store page, and only one Next Fest per title ever.

Free with ads

  • Poor fititch.io

itch.io's quality guidelines tell creators to avoid sponsored installers and ads that block play until the player acts, and itch never puts ads on creator pages.

  • Not allowedSteam

Steam does not accept applications with advertising-based business models, so an ads-funded game must remove ads or monetize differently for its Steam build.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

Technical eligibility

  • itch.io

Desktop games installed through the itch app need an app manifest if they require redistributables (Visual C++, DirectX, XNA), have multiple launch targets or use the itch.io API; simple single-executable builds work without one.

  • itch.io

itch.io's butler docs say the backend rejects builds above 30GB total uncompressed size; the itch app docs say 'the web limit is 2GB'; a 2020 community thread showed a 1 GB web-upload message, now likely out of date.

  • itch.io

itch.io tags butler uploads by channel name: names containing win/windows, linux, mac/osx or android become Windows, Linux, Mac or Android downloads; architecture cannot be tagged.

  • itch.io

itch.io HTML5 zips should not contain more than 1,000 files after extraction (a default limit; itch.io says to contact them if it doesn't suit the project).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Debuting an untested demo at Next Fest

Chris Zukowski advises against launching a demo during Next Fest: have it vetted by streamers and shown in other festivals first, so the version people see on the big week is bulletproof.

  2. A trailer that builds for a minute before anything happens

Creators and players scroll fast. Slow-burn is a valid design choice, but the trailer and capsule still need an image that tells people this game is frightening.

  3. Missing the fest discount rules

Fest discounts don't get an exemption from Steam's 30-day discount cooldown. A discount run just before Scream Fest can lock you out of it.

  4. Mass-mailing every gaming channel

A creator who only plays big releases won't touch your demo. A shortlist of channels that already cover indie horror in your subgenre gets more plays for less effort.

  5. Making the demo hard to stream

Licensed music, sudden extreme audio spikes and long unskippable intros all put creators off. Fix them before outreach, not after.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Rewrites your Steam page copy around what horror buyers look for and lists the missing tags and an unclear subgenre

  • Builds a creator shortlist of YouTube channels that recently covered comparable indie horror, drafts the outreach for you to send and logs every email and key as a receipt

  • Tracks Steam Scream, Next Fest and other themed-fest deadlines so you don't miss a window

  • Publishes 'games like' and subgenre articles on your site that build search traffic over months

  • Watches whether AI assistants mention your game for queries like 'best indie horror games' and reports changes

  • Lines the wishlist numbers you share up against each creator video, clip and fest so you can see what moved

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is October the only time to launch a horror game?

No. October brings the most attention, including Steam's Scream Fest, but it is also the most crowded month. Many teams use October to grow wishlists with a demo and launch at another time. What matters is having a demo out early enough for creators to find it.

Do I really need a demo?

For horror it is close to essential. A demo gives creators something to play before release, and their viewers can wishlist from the video. Streamers kept finding some demos well after Next Fest ended, so leave yours up.

Can an unreleased game join Steam Scream Fest?

Yes. Valve's themed fests welcome Coming Soon titles and demos, though discounted games get priority. The game has to fit the theme; Scream Fest is for horror and Halloween-centric games.

How do I get YouTubers to play my game?

Pick creators who already play indie horror in your subgenre, send a short personal email with a key or demo link and one sentence on what makes it scary, then follow up once. Paid services like Keymailer and Lurkit exist, but cold outreach to the right shortlist works at $0.

Does Outpost pay streamers for coverage?

No. Outpost does the research, drafts the outreach for you to send and records every contact, but it doesn't buy coverage. Every plan works without extra spend.

How fast will this show results?

Creator coverage can move wishlists within days, but it is unpredictable. Search traffic from articles and your store page builds over months. Plan for a steady 90-day push, not one viral video.

Should I also launch on the Epic Games Store?

Often yes, as a second store once your Steam page is working, if your game meets Epic's rules: Epic Games Store developers keep 100% of the first US$1M net revenue per product per calendar year (resetting each 1 January from 2026, applied automatically), then 88/12. Epic First Run is an opt-in 6-month Epic-exclusive window paying 100% net revenue; it is open only to new games not previously released on another third-party PC store, and afterwards the standard 100%-of-first-US$1M then 88/12 terms apply. Epic lets games use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases, keeping up to 100% of that revenue. Epic requires multiplayer games sold on other PC stores to support crossplay with them, and products added to its publishing tools after 9 March 2023 to enable Epic achievements if they offer achievements on other PC stores. Listing on Epic Games Store is paid. $100 per product plus local taxes; not refundable but recouped after $1,000 on EGS. Developer keeps 100% of the first $1M net revenue per product per year (resets every Jan 1 from 2026), then 88/12, applied automatically to Epic-processed payments. A separate opt-in 'Epic First Run' gives 100% for a 6-month exclusive. Free alternative: itch.io or the Microsoft Store PC path (free) Epic First Run is irreversible for its six months, so Outpost asks you to confirm it before planning it.
