GamesSurvival and crafting games playbook

Survival games sell in groups of four

One friend buys, three more follow so they can play together. That's why co-op, streams of groups having a terrible night, and an honest Early Access plan matter more than a big trailer. Outpost plans the fests, playtests and creator outreach, and keeps a receipt for every action.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Survival and crafting games spread through friend groups and streams. Someone watches creators struggle through a co-op night, then buys with friends. Steam recommendations, the Survival and Open World Survival Craft tags and events like Next Fest bring the rest. Valheim is the reference: a five-person team launched it in Early Access on 2 February 2021, with co-op for up to ten players, and it sold over five million copies in about a month.

The buying journey

Watch a stream or clip, wishlist, ask friends, then buy together, often at launch or during a sale. Groups check whether co-op is easy to set up, whether there are dedicated servers and whether the game is updated often. Solo players want to know it's still fun alone.

What studios aim for

  • Wishlists from co-op groups before launch
  • Creators streaming the game as a group
  • A stable Early Access launch with a visible update rhythm
  • Positive reviews about co-op and performance
  • A Discord where players find groups

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Group streams and co-op creators

    Essential

Survival games are most fun to watch when a group is struggling together. Pitch creator groups who play co-op, give them enough keys for everyone and suggest a challenge.

  2. Steam store, tags and wishlists

    Essential

Accurate tags (Survival, Crafting, Open World Survival Craft, Co-op, Base Building) and a trailer that shows friends playing together decide which players Steam shows you to.

  3. Steam Playtest and demo

    High

Co-op networking breaks under load. A free Steam Playtest lets you stress-test servers and collect feedback without risking your reviews, then a demo for Next Fest shows a polished first night.

  4. Discord community

    High

A Discord with looking-for-group channels, bug reports and patch notes keeps groups together and gives creators somewhere to send viewers.

  5. Honest Early Access updates

    Medium

Valve says Early Access is for games where customers can impact the final game, and warns against specific promises. Regular, visible updates are themselves marketing in this genre.

  6. Steam Deck and technical pages

    Supporting

Some survival players play on Steam Deck or with a controller. A good PCGamingWiki page and Deck compatibility review answer questions before they turn into reviews.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Paid up front (premium)

  • Strong fitSteam Curator Connect

Steam Curator Connect sends up to 5 copies to each of up to 100 curators as licences, which is a lever for paid games; how it applies to free-to-play titles was not verified.

  • Poor fititch.io

HTML5 (browser-played) games on itch.io can only take donations; to sell access the project must be set to Downloadable.

  • Strong fititch.io

itch.io offers three pricing modes per project: no payments, $0-or-donate (a suggested donation that can be skipped), and paid with the set price as a minimum that buyers may exceed.

Free with in-app purchases

  • WorksSteam Next Fest

Free-to-play and Early Access games may enter Steam Next Fest if unreleased, with a public demo, a public store page, and only one Next Fest per title ever.

Free with ads

  • Poor fititch.io

itch.io's quality guidelines tell creators to avoid sponsored installers and ads that block play until the player acts, and itch never puts ads on creator pages.

  • Not allowedSteam

Steam does not accept applications with advertising-based business models, so an ads-funded game must remove ads or monetize differently for its Steam build.

Subscription

  • Strong fitDiscord Activities

Discord apps and Activities can sell durable and consumable one-time items and user or server (guild) subscriptions; a Discord developer support article reportedly requires that, from 7 Oct 2024, paid features in supported regions also be offered through Premium Apps (price-parity wording not re-read).

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

Technical eligibility

  • Discord Activities

Discord Activities launch on web/desktop by default; iOS and Android must be enabled in the portal, and mobile builds should respect Discord safe-area insets, with orientation locks (portrait, landscape, unlocked) set through the SDK or portal defaults.

  • Discord Activities

Discord Activities route all network traffic through the Discord proxy: external URLs must be configured as URL mappings (requests to unmapped hosts fail with blocked:csp), only WebSockets are supported for realtime (no WebRTC, no WebTransport yet), and cookies must be scoped to {clientId}.discordsays.com with SameSite=None Partitioned.

  • Discord Activities

A Discord Activity is a developer-hosted single-page web app in an iframe that must use the Embedded App SDK, and user authentication needs the developer's own server to exchange the OAuth code for an access token.

  • Discord Activities

Appearing in Discord's App Directory and App Launcher requires the team owner to complete identity and app verification and meet the Discovery criteria listed in the Developer Portal; verification also unlocks monetization.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Launching Early Access without an update plan

Valve says Early Access titles get limited store visibility until full release, and Steam shows a notice if there are no updates for over 12 months. Survival players judge the game by how often it gets better.

  2. Promising the roadmap

Valve advises against specific promises about future features. Survival communities remember every promised feature that didn't ship.

  3. Co-op that's hard to start

If inviting friends takes more than a couple of clicks, groups give up and refund. Test the invite flow with people who've never seen the game.

  4. A trailer full of crafting menus

Crafting UI doesn't sell a survival game; tension and shared chaos do. Show the threat, the night falling and friends reacting.

  5. Ignoring solo players

Plenty of buyers play alone. Say clearly whether the game scales for solo play, or you'll get reviews from disappointed solo buyers.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is Early Access right for a survival game?

Often, because players like shaping a survival game and the genre suits long-term updates. Valve's rules are strict, though: the game must be playable and worth the price now, you can't add Early Access after release, and Valve warns against specific promises.

How did Valheim break out?

A five-person team launched it in Early Access on 2 February 2021 with co-op for up to ten players, and it sold over five million copies in about a month. Don't plan around that outcome, but notice what it had: a clear co-op hook and a game people wanted to play together.

Do we need dedicated servers?

Many survival groups expect them for persistent worlds. If you don't have them at launch, say so clearly on the store page and explain how hosting works.

Which Steam fests fit survival games?

Next Fest is the main demo event (22 February to 1 March 2027). Couch Co-Op Fest (8 to 15 February 2027) fits local co-op, and Steam Scream fits survival horror. Use How To Market A Game's festival directory for third-party showcases.

How many keys should we send creators?

Enough for the whole group. A survival game streamed by one person alone loses much of its appeal. Send a set of keys and suggest a co-op challenge.

How long does it take to build wishlists?

Months. Wishlists build steadily with spikes around fests and creator videos. Start the store page early; Steam requires it to be public for at least two weeks before release anyway.

Should I also launch on the Epic Games Store?

Often yes, as a second store once your Steam page is working, if your game meets Epic's rules: Epic Games Store developers keep 100% of the first US$1M net revenue per product per calendar year (resetting each 1 January from 2026, applied automatically), then 88/12. Epic First Run is an opt-in 6-month Epic-exclusive window paying 100% net revenue; it is open only to new games not previously released on another third-party PC store, and afterwards the standard 100%-of-first-US$1M then 88/12 terms apply. Epic lets games use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases, keeping up to 100% of that revenue. Epic requires multiplayer games sold on other PC stores to support crossplay with them, and products added to its publishing tools after 9 March 2023 to enable Epic achievements if they offer achievements on other PC stores. Listing on Epic Games Store is paid. $100 per product plus local taxes; not refundable but recouped after $1,000 on EGS. Developer keeps 100% of the first $1M net revenue per product per year (resets every Jan 1 from 2026), then 88/12, applied automatically to Epic-processed payments. A separate opt-in 'Epic First Run' gives 100% for a 6-month exclusive. Free alternative: itch.io or the Microsoft Store PC path (free) Epic First Run is irreversible for its six months, so Outpost asks you to confirm it before planning it.
