Get chosen when someone nearby is deciding where to eat tonight

Diners decide in Google Maps, reservation apps, Tripadvisor and their friends' stories, often within the hour. Outpost covers your own website: a menu and booking path that search can read, dish articles and how AI assistants answer for your neighborhood.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Most restaurant decisions start with a map search ('ramen near me', 'brunch [neighborhood]') where diners compare photos, menu, price level and reviews in seconds. Locals also discover places through Instagram and TikTok food creators and local food coverage, while travelers lean on Tripadvisor. Reservation platforms such as OpenTable and Resy are discovery channels in their own right in cities where they're common.

The buying journey

Craving or occasion, map or app search, scan photos and the menu, check hours and whether you can book or order, glance at recent reviews, decide. For special occasions the window is longer: diners save places from social posts and press weeks ahead and book through a reservation app.

What restaurants aim for

  • More covers on slow nights, not just more traffic on busy ones
  • Ranking in the map pack for the dishes and cuisine you're known for
  • More direct bookings and orders, fewer commissions
  • Fresh reviews that mention dishes by name

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Google Business Profile (menu, photos, booking, ordering)

    Essential

The profile is your storefront in Search and Maps. Google lets restaurants edit the menu and featured dishes, connect Reserve with Google partners and set preferred ordering providers, all from the profile.

  2. A crawlable menu on your own site

    High

A text HTML menu, not only a PDF or image, lets Google and AI assistants match you to dish-level searches like 'birria tacos near me'.

  3. Reservation and review platforms

    High

OpenTable, Resy, Tripadvisor and Yelp each carry their own audience. Claim the ones your diners use, keep details consistent and reply to reviews.

  4. Instagram and TikTok

    High

Short videos of signature dishes and the room are how many diners discover new places; invite local food creators to taste, with clear disclosure if the meal is comped.

  5. Local food press and newsletters

    Medium

City food sites, neighborhood newsletters and 'best of' lists drive bookings and links. Pitch a specific story: a new menu, a chef, a dish nobody else makes.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. PDF or image-only menus

Search engines and AI assistants match diners to dishes. If your menu is a photo, you're invisible for dish-level searches. Keep an HTML menu and update it with the real one.

  2. Wrong holiday hours

Hours set once and forgotten send diners to a locked door and produce angry reviews. Update every platform before each holiday.

  3. Asking for Yelp reviews

Yelp discourages businesses from soliciting reviews and can penalize listings it believes are soliciting. Ask on Google instead, and simply reply on Yelp.

  4. Free dessert for five stars

Google prohibits incentives for reviews, and the FTC's 2024 rule bans paying for positive reviews. Ask everyone the same way, with nothing attached.

  5. Letting delivery apps own your name

If third-party pages outrank your site for '[restaurant] menu', diners order through commissions. Make your own menu and ordering pages the clear, complete option.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits your website's menu and booking pages for titles, structured data, mobile setup and broken links, and flags gaps

  • Writes articles about the dishes you're known for, from the facts you confirm

  • Writes holiday and seasonal-menu articles, and you set their dates on the Calendar so they're live ahead of each holiday, with receipts

  • Connects Search Console and reports which pages earn impressions and clicks

  • Tracks whether AI assistants recommend you for 'best [dish] in [neighborhood]'

  • Outpost doesn't manage map listings, booking platforms or reviews for restaurants; it covers your website, articles and AI answers

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do restaurants need a website if they have a Google profile?

Yes. A simple site with an HTML menu, hours and booking link gives Google and AI assistants text to match dish searches against, and keeps third-party pages from defining you.

Is OpenTable or Resy worth the cost?

It depends on your city and diners. Both are paid; third-party price estimates vary. Check what your nearby peers use and what your diners ask for before signing.

How do we get more Google reviews without breaking rules?

Ask every guest the same way with a link or QR code, and never offer anything in return. Reply to reviews, including critical ones.

How fast does restaurant SEO work?

Fixing hours, photos, menu and booking links can change results within weeks. Ranking for competitive dish and neighborhood searches builds over months as reviews and mentions accumulate.

Should we invite food influencers?

Small local creators often bring real diners. If the meal is free, they need to disclose it; set that expectation in writing.

Is Outpost available for restaurants today?

Outpost's campaigns are built for SaaS, apps and games. For a restaurant, it covers your website, articles and AI answers today; it doesn't manage map listings, booking platforms or reviews. This page lays out the playbook so you can run the rest yourself.
