AppsParenting and baby apps playbook

Parents look for help at 3 a.m. Be the answer that is there.

Parenting apps are found at specific life stages: a due date, a four-month sleep regression, the first day of school. Outpost builds stage-by-stage content, listings and community answers that parents trust, and records every action with a receipt.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Parents search for an exact moment: 'baby sleep schedule 4 months', 'how much should a newborn eat', 'chore chart for 7 year old'. They ask other parents in communities such as r/NewParents, r/beyondthebump and r/BabyBumps and in pregnancy forums organized by due-date month, and they take recommendations from professionals they already trust: pediatric nurses, lactation consultants, sleep consultants and doulas. Instagram and TikTok parent creators shape what new parents try. Because the user is an adult caring for a child, trust and privacy are part of the product: COPPA applies to services directed to children under 13 or with actual knowledge of collecting from them, and Apple has extra rules for the Kids category and for health data.

The buying journey

A new stage or problem appears -> searches the specific question or asks in a parent group -> finds an app through an answer, a creator or a professional -> installs during a stressful moment and needs value in the first minute -> invites the other parent or a caregiver -> pays for a premium tier if it saves time or worry -> outgrows the app as the child ages unless it grows with them.

What app makers aim for

  • Rankings for stage-specific questions parents search
  • Installs that invite a second caregiver
  • Referrals from professionals parents trust
  • Trust signals: clear privacy practices and no medical overclaims
  • Retention past the stage that brought the parent in

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Life-stage content and ASO

    Essential

Parents search for the exact age or milestone they are in. A content map by week and month of age, matched to store keywords, is how most parenting apps get found.

  2. Parent communities

    High

Parents trust other parents. Helpful answers in r/NewParents, r/beyondthebump and due-date groups, from a founder who discloses who they are, build word of mouth. Many of these communities restrict promotion.

  3. Professional referrals

    High

Lactation consultants, sleep consultants, doulas and pediatric practices recommend tools to parents. A free professional plan or printable handouts give them a reason to.

  4. Parent creators

    Medium

Instagram and TikTok parent creators show apps in real routines. Small creators with an engaged local or niche audience often fit better than big accounts.

  5. Privacy as a feature

    Medium

Parents worry about data on their children. Plain-language privacy pages and no ad tracking where Apple's Kids rules or health rules apply are both compliance and marketing.

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Medical claims without a qualified source

Parents act on what you say about sleep, feeding and development. Have a qualified professional review stage content and avoid promising outcomes.

  2. Treating a parent app like a kids app, or the reverse

If children use the app, COPPA and Apple's Kids category rules apply, including limits on third-party analytics and ads. If it is for parents, say so clearly and design accordingly.

  3. Targeting ads on pregnancy or health data

Apple's guidelines bar using health data for advertising or marketing. Parents also react strongly when they feel tracked. Keep sensitive data out of targeting.

  4. Ignoring the second caregiver

Many apps are chosen by one parent and abandoned if the partner or nanny cannot use them. Make invites easy and market the shared use.

  5. No plan for when the child ages out

A newborn app loses users as babies grow. Either grow with the family or plan referrals to the next stage.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does COPPA apply to our parenting app?

COPPA covers services directed to children under 13, and general-audience services with actual knowledge that they collect information from a child. An app designed for parents is usually not child-directed, but features used by kids can change that. Get legal advice for your specific app.

Should we list in the App Store's Kids category?

Only if the app is designed for children. Kids category apps must avoid links out and purchases outside a parental gate, and generally cannot use third-party analytics or advertising. Parent-facing apps usually belong elsewhere.

How do professionals help with acquisition?

Parents trust nurses, lactation consultants and sleep consultants. If your app makes their work easier, for example by giving them clearer logs from clients, they will recommend it. A free professional account is a common starting point.

Can we advertise using pregnancy or baby data?

Avoid it. Apple's guidelines prohibit using health data for advertising or marketing, and parents lose trust quickly when they feel tracked.

How long until stage content brings installs?

Usually a few months as pages rank, then it compounds because every new family passes through the same stages. Community answers and professional referrals help sooner.

Do we need a big creator budget?

No. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend. Small parent creators often respond to a genuinely useful app and free access.
