AppsTravel apps playbook

Travel app marketing timed to when people actually plan trips

Travelers look for apps in bursts: while planning, right before departure, and on the ground. Outpost builds destination pages, store assets and community work around those moments, with a receipt for every action.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

People find travel apps while researching a specific trip: searching for a destination plus a problem ('offline map Japan', 'split costs group trip'), reading trip reports in communities such as r/travel, r/solotravel or FlyerTalk, and browsing the App Store or Google Play just before they leave. Store features matter here: Apple lets you build custom product pages and assign keywords so a page for a specific use or destination can appear in search results instead of your default page.

The buying journey

Discovery usually starts weeks before a trip, peaks in the days before departure, and the app has to prove itself on the first day of travel, often offline or on roaming data. Many travelers use an app for one trip and forget it, so retention depends on being useful between trips too (saved places, next-trip planning, loyalty tracking).

What app makers aim for

  • Rank in app stores for destination and problem searches
  • Publish destination-specific landing pages that bring in planners months ahead
  • Use seasonal in-app events to resurface the app before peak travel
  • Earn mentions in trip reports and travel community discussions

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. App Store and Google Play optimization

    Essential

Travelers search stores right before a trip. Apple's custom product pages can be assigned keywords, so a destination- or use-specific page can show in search instead of your generic page.

  2. Destination and problem SEO

    Essential

Planning searches are specific: a city, a route, a problem. Useful guides that embed the app's real value compound across seasons and get refreshed each year.

  3. In-app events and seasonal promotions

    High

Apple in-app events can run up to 31 days and be promoted up to 14 days ahead, appearing on your product page, in search and in editorial selections; a seasonal challenge or new destination launch is a real reason to resurface.

  4. Travel communities

    Medium

Trip reports and planning threads in travel subreddits and forums like FlyerTalk are where travelers swap tools. Many restrict self-promotion, so participation has to be genuinely helpful.

  5. Launch platforms

    Supporting

Product Hunt and similar sites help with early users and press for a new travel tool, though they do not replace store search.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Publishing at peak instead of before it

By the time travel peaks, planners already chose their tools. Seasonal pages and store assets need to be live before the planning window.

  2. One generic store page for every traveler

A road-tripper, a backpacker and a business traveler search differently. Custom product pages let you meet each one with the right message.

  3. Self-promoting in travel communities

Many travel communities remove promotional posts quickly. Answer the question, mention the app only when it truly helps and when the rules allow.

  4. Ignoring the between-trips gap

Travel apps are often used for one trip and forgotten. Without a reason to return, growth stays a seasonal spike.

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

When should a travel app start marketing for summer?

Well before summer. Planning starts weeks to months ahead, and SEO pages need time to be indexed and earn trust, so prepare seasonal content one season in advance.

Are App Store custom product pages worth it for travel apps?

Usually yes. Apple lets you publish multiple custom product pages and assign keywords to them, so a page about a specific trip type can appear in search results for matching queries.

Can we run an in-app event just to announce a discount?

Apple's guidelines say price promotions that do not introduce new content, and general awareness promotions, are not appropriate for in-app events. Tie events to a real challenge, launch or seasonal moment.

Can Outpost post in r/travel for us?

No. Outpost drafts helpful answers and tracks threads, but posting should be done by a real person within each community's rules.

How long until destination SEO pays off?

Expect months. Pages often start earning impressions within weeks, and they compound across seasons when refreshed each year.

What does Outpost cost for a travel app?

Runway is $49 for pre-launch apps, Growth $149 and Autopilot $499. Every plan works at $0 extra ad spend.
