Turn recipe searches and saved Pins into meal-planning users

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Meal planning starts with recipes. People search Google for a dish or a plan ('high protein meal prep for the week'), save ideas on Pinterest, and only then look for a tool that turns them into a weekly plan and a grocery list. Google and Pinterest both read recipe markup from your website (recipe rich results and Recipe Rich Pins), which gives an app with a public, well-marked-up recipe library a real discovery edge. Meal-prep and budget-cooking communities and food creators drive the word of mouth.

The buying journey

Find a recipe or plan, save it, try the planner for a week, and upgrade once the grocery list, pantry or family-sharing features become routine. Being able to import recipes from any website is a frequent reason to pick one app over another.

What app makers aim for

  • Get recipe and meal-plan pages eligible for Google recipe rich results
  • Turn Pinterest saves into app installs through Rich Pins
  • Rank in the stores for 'meal planner' and 'grocery list' searches
  • Be ready for holiday cooking spikes with content published ahead of time
  • Earn mentions from food creators and meal-prep communities

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Pinterest with Recipe Rich Pins

    Essential

Recipe Rich Pins pull the title, servings, cook time, ratings and ingredients from Schema.org or h-recipe markup on your pages, and update when the page changes. A Pinterest business account is free, so this is the most direct route from planning intent to your app.

  2. Recipe SEO with structured data

    Essential

Recipe markup with the required name and image makes pages eligible for recipe rich results in Google Search and Images. ItemList markup on a summary page can enable a host carousel. Eligibility isn't ranking, but without the markup you aren't in the game.

  3. App Store and Google Play search

    High

Once people decide they want a planner, they search the store for 'meal planner', 'grocery list' or 'recipe keeper'. Screenshots should show the weekly plan and the auto-built grocery list, because that's the moment of value.

  4. Meal-prep and budget-cooking communities

    Medium

Meal-prep, budget-cooking and family-dinner communities share plans and tools. A free printable weekly plan, offered openly by the maker, fits how those spaces work.

  5. Food bloggers and creators

    Medium

Creators already own recipes and audiences. Clean recipe import with attribution and a link back, or a shared 'creator meal plan', gives them a reason to mention the app.

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

    Seasonal meal plans

    • Publish 4-5 complete meal plans as indexable pages with grocery lists, including a Thanksgiving menu and cooking timeline

    Communities and creators

    • Share a free printable weekly plan in two meal-prep or budget-cooking communities, following their rules and saying you're the maker

    • List on AlternativeTo against the planners your users switch from
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Recipes locked inside the app

If recipes only exist behind a login, neither Google nor Pinterest can see them. Publish a public library on the web and let the app be where plans and lists live.

  2. Missing or broken recipe markup

Without valid Recipe structured data, pages aren't eligible for recipe rich results, and Rich Pins have nothing to read. Validate after every template change.

  3. Seasonal content that goes live on the day

People plan holiday meals ahead. A Thanksgiving plan published the week of the holiday has already missed most of the saving and searching.

  4. Republishing other creators' photos and text

Copying recipes wholesale from blogs invites takedowns and turns creators against you. Import with attribution and a link back, or partner with them.

  5. Pinning once and stopping

One Pin per recipe, posted once, rarely builds momentum. Several images per plan, published over time, give Pinterest more chances to show your content.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Audits your site's recipe pages for titles, structured data, broken links and page weight, and lists exactly what's missing.

  • Writes holiday and seasonal articles, which you place on the Calendar weeks ahead, and logs each publish with a receipt.

  • Drafts food-blogger partnership pitches for you to send.

  • Tracks whether AI assistants recommend your app for prompts like 'best meal planning app for families'.

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

We're an app. Do we really need a website with recipes?

For this category, yes. Google and Pinterest discover recipes from web pages with structured data, not from inside your app. A public library is your top of funnel, and the app is where people plan, shop and cook.

Does recipe schema make us rank?

It makes pages eligible for recipe rich results, which is different from ranking. Content quality, links and site reputation still decide position. Markup without good recipes won't do much, and good recipes without markup leave visibility on the table.

How far ahead should holiday content go live?

Weeks at minimum, and months for SEO. Pinterest users save ideas early, and new pages need time to be indexed. Start Thanksgiving and Christmas content in early autumn.

Do we need Pinterest ads?

No. Organic Pins with Rich Pins can carry a recipe app. Every Outpost plan works at $0 extra spend; ads are an optional accelerator, not a requirement.

Is importing recipes from blogs okay?

Outpost doesn't give legal advice. In practice, importing for a user's personal use with attribution and a link back keeps creators on your side, while republishing their photos and text publicly does the opposite.

How long before Pinterest and SEO pay off?

Both compound. Pins and pages can keep earning saves and searches for a long time, but expect months, not days, before the curve is clear. Outpost shows each step as it happens, so progress is visible early.
