AppsLanguage learning apps playbook

Nobody learns 'a language'. They learn Korean for a trip in May.

One incumbent owns the generic language-app search. Learners, though, search and gather by language, script, exam and goal, each with its own subreddit, vocabulary and keywords. Outpost builds per-language pages, store listings and community plans, and logs each one.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Learners search for the language plus the goal ('learn Japanese kanji', 'Spanish for travel', 'JLPT N5 vocabulary'), often after outgrowing or tiring of a general app and searching for an alternative. They ask in r/languagelearning and in language-specific subreddits such as r/LearnJapanese, r/German and r/Spanish, watch polyglot and teacher YouTube channels, and swap tools in language-exchange Discord servers. Native-language markets matter as much as English: a Spanish speaker learning English searches in Spanish, in a different store locale.

The buying journey

Learners try an app for a few days and judge it on whether it teaches what they need at their level: script, grammar, listening, speaking or exam prep. Committed learners use several tools and are willing to pay for one that fills a clear gap. Placement, level fit and visible progress decide whether they stay past the first week.

What app makers aim for

  • Rank for one language and goal before expanding
  • Localize store listings for the learners' native-language markets
  • Win alternative searches from learners leaving general apps
  • Earn recommendations in language-specific communities
  • Retain learners past the first week with level-appropriate content

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Per-language and per-goal SEO

    Essential

Searches are specific to a language, script, level or exam. Pages built for each, like hiragana charts, beginner Korean phrases or exam vocabulary lists, are genuinely useful, rank, and lead naturally to the app. Localized versions should use hreflang, with each version listing itself and the others.

  2. Localized store listings

    Essential

App Store Connect lets you localize the app name, description and keywords per language, and Google Play supports custom store listings by country or audience. A listing in the learner's own language converts better than an English one.

  3. Language-specific communities

    High

r/languagelearning is broad, but each language has its own subreddit, Discord servers and forums with their own resource lists. Being listed in a community's resource wiki or mentioned by regulars lasts far longer than a post.

  4. Teacher and polyglot creators

    Medium

Learners trust teachers. YouTube teachers and polyglots who review tools, or who could build a course with you, can reach exactly the level and language you serve.

  5. Alternative and comparison searches

    Medium

Learners who plateau with a general app search for alternatives for a specific skill. Honest pages on what your app teaches that a general app does not catch that switch.

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

Subscription

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple auto-renewable subscriptions must provide ongoing value, last at least seven days, work across all of the user's devices, and clearly describe what the user gets before asking them to subscribe.

Freemium

  • Strong fitAlternativeTo

AlternativeTo classifies apps as Free, Freemium (free version can 'perform the main purpose of the app'), Free for personal use or Commercial (time- or usage-limited versions count as Commercial), offers an 'Only Open Source' filter, rejects Coming Soon, closed/private beta, invite-only and Early Access apps, and will probably accept open betas.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

On the App Store and Mac App Store, unlocking features, subscriptions, in-game currency, premium content or a full version must use Apple In-App Purchase, and apps may not use their own unlock mechanisms such as license keys.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Launching with every language at once

Thin coverage of many languages loses to deep coverage of one. Communities and searches are per language, so win one, gather reviews that mention it, then expand.

  2. English-only store listings

Many learners search the store in their native language. App Store Connect and Google Play both support localized listings; an English listing in a Spanish-speaking market leaves easy installs behind.

  3. Mass-producing per-language pages

Hundreds of near-identical 'learn X' pages generated from one template are what Google's scaled content abuse policy targets. Fewer pages with real reference content for each language rank better and help learners.

  4. Ignoring the community's resource wiki

Language subreddits and Discords keep curated resource lists that learners rely on. A spammy post gets you banned; a useful tool, raised with the moderators, can be listed for years.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Picks a beachhead language and goal from your keyword research and competitors, then plans the store copy and articles around it

  • Publishes per-language reference articles and study guides with real content

  • Drafts store metadata for your learners' markets from your confirmed facts, for you to paste into each store

  • Writes study guides per language that learners can share in their own communities

  • Writes articles for January, travel season and exam dates, which you place on the Calendar, and tracks rankings and AI-assistant mentions, with receipts

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How can a small language app compete with the market leader?

By going deep where the leader is general: one language, one skill, one level or one exam. Learners who outgrow a general app actively search for that, and communities recommend specialists.

Which language should I launch with?

The one where your content is strongest and the learner community is active. A clearly underserved goal, such as a script, an exam or a dialect, is often better than the most popular language.

Do I need to localize my store listing?

If your learners speak another language, yes. App Store Connect lets you localize the name, description and keywords, and Google Play supports localized and custom store listings. Learners often search in their own language.

Is r/languagelearning a good place to promote an app?

It is a great place to understand learners. For promotion, read the rules first; language communities tend to welcome useful free resources and dislike ads. Language-specific subreddits and their resource wikis are often more valuable.

When do learners look for language apps?

Interest tends to rise in January and before summer travel, and exam-prep demand follows exam dates. Plan per-language content and store updates a month ahead.

How long does per-language SEO take?

Months, and it adds up by language. Reference pages such as script charts and vocabulary lists keep attracting learners for a long time once they rank. Outpost publishes steadily and reports progress per language.
