Desktop softwareLinux desktop apps playbook

Ship your Linux app where Linux users actually install software

Linux users install from Flathub, the Snap Store and their distro, then talk about apps in a few open communities. Outpost prepares the submissions, metadata and community posts, and logs each one.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Linux desktop users mostly discover apps in their software center and on Flathub's own site. Your MetaInfo (name, summary, screenshots, release notes) is your listing there. Beyond the stores, they follow desktop and community news: This Week in GNOME notes, KDE and distro forums, Linux subreddits, Linux YouTube channels and podcasts. They care about native integration, sandboxing, open-source status and whether the app respects them (no telemetry surprises).

The buying journey

Find the app in a software center or a post, install in one click, and judge quickly on integration and stability. Many Linux apps are free and open source, funded by donations. Flathub also allows paid apps and in-app payments, as long as they're disclosed up front and priced reasonably.

What software makers aim for

  • Get accepted on Flathub with a verified checkmark
  • Publish to the Snap Store and AppImageHub for users outside Flatpak
  • Get featured in desktop community news such as This Week in GNOME
  • Be listed as the Linux alternative to the tools people are leaving
  • Grow donations or paid upgrades without upsetting an open-source audience

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Flathub

    Essential

Flathub feeds the software centers of many distros. It needs a reverse-DNS app ID on a domain you control, valid MetaInfo, a desktop file and an icon. Domain verification gives the verified checkmark, and AI-generated code or docs must be disclosed. Console apps, minimal wrappers, tray-only apps and system utilities are excluded.

  2. Snap Store

    High

Reaches Ubuntu users and others who use snaps. New snap names are reviewed by hand, and classic confinement needs a forum request and a security review, so register early.

  3. Desktop community news (This Week in GNOME, KDE, distro communities)

    High

This Week in GNOME accepts notes through its Matrix room for updates relevant to GNOME or related projects such as Flatpak. GNOME Circle membership adds promotion for qualifying apps. These are the most trusted voices in the ecosystem.

  4. AppImageHub

    Medium

A simple catalog for single-file AppImages. Submit by pull request; commercial apps need a downloadable demo or trial.

  5. Open-source and Linux communities

    Medium

Linux and open-source communities value transparency about license, telemetry and funding. A release post with real changes and screenshots does better than a launch pitch.

  6. AlternativeTo

    Medium

Linux users often search for a Linux alternative to a Windows or Mac tool. Mark your listing as Linux and connect it to the right alternatives.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Packaging and metadata

    • Write or fix MetaInfo: a clear summary, current screenshots, release notes and the correct license, and validate it
    • Choose a reverse-DNS app ID on a domain you control, so you can get Flathub verification
    • Prepare a snapcraft.yaml and an AppImage build if you want to reach users outside Flatpak
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Submissions

    • Open the Flathub submission pull request. Review is done by volunteers, and the app goes live within hours of merge.
    • Register the snap name early, because new names are reviewed by hand
    • Open the AppImageHub pull request and submit to AlternativeTo with Linux marked
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Community news

    • Once you're on Flathub, post a This Week in GNOME note through its Matrix room, if your app is relevant to GNOME or Flatpak
    • Write a release post with real changes and screenshots for one Linux community, following its self-promotion rules
    • If your app is a GNOME app that fits GNOME Circle, start the application
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Measure and iterate

    • Check install statistics on Flathub and in the Snap Store dashboard
    • Refresh screenshots and the summary in MetaInfo based on the questions users asked
    • Plan the next release announcement around a distro or desktop release

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Thin or broken MetaInfo

On Flathub and in software centers, MetaInfo is your store page. Missing screenshots, stale release notes or an invalid file mean a weak listing, or no listing at all.

  2. Submitting a console or tray-only app to Flathub

Flathub excludes console apps, minimal wrappers, tray-only apps and system utilities. A CLI tool belongs in package managers instead.

  3. Racing third-party packagers

Flathub rejects third-party submissions when upstream already ships an official Flatpak. Coordinate with community packagers instead of competing with them, and claim verification.

  4. Hiding AI-generated code or telemetry

Flathub requires disclosure of AI-generated code or docs, and Linux communities react badly to surprise telemetry. Say what you do up front.

  5. Posting a launch pitch

Linux communities respond to substance: what changed, screenshots, license and how it's funded. Marketing language gets downvoted.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Lays out the MetaInfo and store rules (summary, screenshots, release notes, license) before submission.

  • Tracks Flathub, Snap Store and AppImageHub submissions you make as tasks with receipts: PR links and the go-live time.

  • Drafts This Week in GNOME notes and release posts that lead with what changed, for you to post.

  • Prepares AlternativeTo listings against the Windows and Mac tools Linux users want to replace, for you to submit.

  • Tracks whether AI assistants name your app for prompts like 'best Linux alternative to X'.

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Flatpak, Snap or AppImage: which should we ship?

If you can only do one, Flathub reaches the most desktop users through software centers across distros. Add a snap for Ubuntu-centric users and an AppImage for people who want a single file. Outpost tracks each submission, so maintaining several doesn't become guesswork.

Can we sell a paid app on Flathub?

Yes. Flathub allows paid apps and in-app payments if they're disclosed up front, priced reasonably and give a clear benefit. Being open about pricing matters more to this audience than the price itself.

Our app is a CLI tool. Does Flathub make sense?

No. Flathub excludes console apps. Distribute through Homebrew, distro packages and language package managers instead; see our CLI tools page.

Does the Flathub verified checkmark matter?

It shows users the listing comes from the real developer. You get it by proving control of the domain in your app ID, or through the platform behind an io.github ID, so choose the app ID with that in mind.

How do we get into This Week in GNOME?

Join its Matrix room and send a short note to the bot. The update must be relevant to GNOME or related projects such as Flatpak, and the work should already be merged and available on an established platform such as Flathub.

How long does Linux distribution take to pay off?

Store listings can go live within days of approval. Reputation in Linux communities builds over several releases, and each solid release with a clear announcement adds to it.
