Producers switch tools when they hear what someone made with yours

DAWs and production tools sell on workflow, sound and the producers who use them. Outpost writes the tutorials people actually search, drafts release posts for you to post, and keeps a receipt for every action.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Producers find new tools by watching other producers: YouTube workflow videos, track breakdowns and 'I switched DAWs' videos. They read KVR Audio and Gearspace for news and opinions, ask in communities like r/WeAreTheMusicMakers and r/edmproduction, and search for 'best DAW for beginners' or 'free DAW' when starting out. Students often get their first DAW through school.

The buying journey

Long and hands-on. A producer downloads a trial or free version, tries to finish one idea in it, checks plugin format support (VST3, AU, CLAP), CPU load and how it handles their projects, and only then buys. Switching a main DAW is a big decision, so many people start by using a new tool alongside their current one.

What software makers aim for

  • Trial users who finish a track in the first week
  • Coverage on KVR and in producer tutorials
  • Ranking for beginner and 'how to' searches
  • A free or lite tier that leads to upgrades
  • Education and student adoption

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Producer YouTube and tutorials

    Essential

Producers learn tools by watching someone use them. Partner with producers who make workflow videos in your genre, and publish your own short 'make this sound in X' videos.

  2. KVR Audio and Gearspace

    High

KVR's product database and news are where audio software is announced and compared, and developers can claim their brand there. Gearspace's forums are where opinions form. Post real updates and answer questions as the developer.

  3. Free tier, trial and education pricing

    High

Producers won't switch without testing on their own projects. A generous trial or lite version, plus student pricing, lets the product sell itself over time.

  4. Workflow and beginner SEO

    Medium

'How to sidechain in <DAW>', 'best DAW for beginners' and 'free DAW for Windows' are searched constantly. Clear guides with audio examples build traffic over months.

  5. NAMM and audio press

    Medium

Announcing around NAMM (exhibits 28 to 30 January 2027) puts you in the news cycle when press and retailers are paying attention, even if you don't exhibit.

  6. Producer communities

    Supporting

r/WeAreTheMusicMakers, r/edmproduction and DAW-specific communities are strict about self-promotion. Share builds, ask for feedback where allowed, and let users do the recommending.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

Make the trial finish a track

    • Check that a new user can make a short loop within 10 minutes of first launch, and fix whatever blocks that
    • Write a clear plugin compatibility page (VST3, AU, CLAP, AAX) and a system requirements page
    • Claim your developer brand on KVR Audio and update every product listing
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Reach producers where they learn

    • List 15 producers who make workflow videos in your target genre and send each a personal note with a license
    • Record three short 'how to make X in our tool' videos
    • Submit a product update to KVR news
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Publish searched guides

    • Write four workflow guides (sidechain, comping vocals, routing, exporting stems) with audio and screenshots
    • Write one honest comparison page against the DAW your users most often come from
    • List the tool on AlternativeTo against that DAW
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Plan the season and measure

    • Decide your late-November sale and education pricing in advance
    • Plan a NAMM-week announcement for late January 2027
    • Track trial-to-paid by source and keep investing in the channel that brings producers who stay

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. A trial that doesn't let people finish anything

Short trials, saving disabled or harsh limits stop producers before they've made something they care about. Let them finish and export a track; limit scale or extras instead.

  2. Marketing features instead of music

Producers buy because of what they hear and how fast they get there. Show finished tracks, sounds and real sessions, not lists of features.

  3. Hiding compatibility details

Plugin formats, OS and chip support, latency and project import decide whether someone can even try your tool. Put them on a clear page, not in a forum thread.

  4. Spamming producer communities

Producer subreddits and forums remove promotional posts quickly. Answer questions, share real updates and let users recommend you.

  5. Copy protection that punishes buyers

Activation pain shows up in forum threads and reviews. Keep licensing simple and explain clearly how it works offline.

  • Tracks AI-search answers for prompts like 'best DAW for beginners' and reports where you appear

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can a new DAW compete with the big names?

Not as a general DAW on day one. New tools win a niche first: a genre, a workflow (live looping, scoring, beat-making on a laptop), a platform (Linux) or a price point. Market to that niche and let it grow.

Should we exhibit at NAMM?

Not necessarily. Exhibiting costs money; announcing doesn't. Time a release or major update for NAMM week (exhibits 28 to 30 January 2027 in Anaheim) and pitch audio press then.

Is KVR still relevant?

Yes. KVR's product database, news and forum are still where audio software gets announced and compared, and developers can claim their brand and submit news for free.

How generous should our free tier be?

Generous enough that someone can finish and export a track. Producers recommend tools they've made music with; limits on scale, content or pro features convert better than limits on saving.

Do sponsored YouTube videos work?

They can, with the right producer. A sponsored video from someone in your genre who really uses your tool works much better than a big generic channel. Always disclose sponsorships.

How long does this take to work?

Producer word of mouth and SEO build over months. Expect early signals from KVR and tutorials within weeks, and steady search traffic after several months.
