01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Mac players start from a question that Windows players never ask: will this run on my Mac, and how well? They filter by macOS on Steam and GOG, look a game up in community compatibility databases such as AppleGamingWiki (which tracks native, Rosetta 2, CrossOver and Parallels status), and read Mac-focused sites like Mac Gamer HQ, which keeps lists of native Apple silicon games and 'Can my Mac run it?' tests. Word of mouth goes through r/macgaming and creators who benchmark games on M-series chips, so a credible native build plus clear chip-level system requirements does more than any ad.

The buying journey

Discover (a 'native on Apple silicon' list, a subreddit thread, a Steam macOS filter or a Games-app recommendation) -> verify (compatibility wiki entry, Mac system requirements, benchmark video or forum report) -> wishlist or follow -> buy at launch, at the Mac-port announcement or in a sale -> report back to the community, which becomes the next player's verification step.

What studios aim for

  • Turn a Mac port into a second launch moment instead of a silent checkbox
  • Get the game listed correctly as native Apple silicon in compatibility databases and Mac gaming lists
  • Convert Mac wishlists and followers on Steam
  • Decide between Steam, the Mac App Store, or both, without breaking either build
  • Rank for 'does [game] run on Mac' and '[genre] games for Mac' searches

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Steam store page with real macOS support

    Essential

Steam is where most cross-platform indie games get bought, and Mac players filter by OS. Tick macOS only when the build ships. Steam requires new macOS builds to be 64-bit and notarized. Then write Mac system requirements that name the chips and say native or Rosetta, and announce the port with an update event so followers and wishlisters hear about it.

  2. Mac compatibility databases and Mac gaming press

    Essential

AppleGamingWiki and Mac Gamer HQ are where Mac players check whether a game runs before they buy. An accurate native entry plus a short pitch with a review key and your chip test results is a free way to reach exactly the people who can buy.

  3. r/macgaming and Mac benchmark creators

    High

Mac players trust other Mac players. A developer post with honest performance notes (which chips, frame rates, known issues) and keys for creators who benchmark Apple silicon tells buyers what they most want to know.

  4. Mac App Store with Featuring Nominations and Game Center

    Medium

It reaches Mac owners who never install Steam, and the Games app surfaces games automatically. It needs the US$99/yr Apple Developer Program and a sandboxed build, and featuring is Apple's editorial decision, so treat it as an extra storefront, not your only plan.

  5. Search content for compatibility questions

    Medium

Players search 'does X run on Mac', 'best [genre] games for Mac' and 'native Apple silicon games'. A Mac page on your site with the specs, the stores and a short FAQ ranks slowly but keeps paying off after launch week.

  6. Mac-friendly storefronts (GOG, itch.io)

    Supporting

GOG lets players filter by macOS, and itch.io lets you upload a Mac build for free and set your own revenue share. Both reach players who prefer DRM-free or indie stores and add listings that rank for your game's name.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Paid up front (premium)

  • Strong fitSteam Curator Connect

Steam Curator Connect sends up to 5 copies to each of up to 100 curators as licences, which is a lever for paid games; how it applies to free-to-play titles was not verified.

  • Poor fititch.io

HTML5 (browser-played) games on itch.io can only take donations; to sell access the project must be set to Downloadable.

  • Strong fititch.io

itch.io offers three pricing modes per project: no payments, $0-or-donate (a suggested donation that can be skipped), and paid with the set price as a minimum that buyers may exceed.

Free with in-app purchases

  • WorksSteam Next Fest

Free-to-play and Early Access games may enter Steam Next Fest if unreleased, with a public demo, a public store page, and only one Next Fest per title ever.

Free with ads

  • Poor fititch.io

itch.io's quality guidelines tell creators to avoid sponsored installers and ads that block play until the player acts, and itch never puts ads on creator pages.

  • Not allowedSteam

Steam does not accept applications with advertising-based business models, so an ads-funded game must remove ads or monetize differently for its Steam build.

One-time purchase

  • WorksMac App Store

Non-subscription apps on Apple stores may offer a free time-limited trial only through a free (Tier 0) non-consumable IAP named 'XX-day Trial', disclosing its length and later charges before it starts.

  • WorksMac App Store

Mac App Store apps must be sandboxed and self-contained, may not show a license screen, require license keys or use their own copy protection, and must update only through the Mac App Store.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade games are played by subscribers without ads or in-app purchases, so an ad- or IAP-funded design does not fit Arcade.

  • Mac App Store

On Apple's stores, credits or in-game currency bought through in-app purchase may not expire, and unlocking features, game levels or in-game currency must use in-app purchase, except where Apple's link-out entitlements (3.1.1(a)) apply or on the United States storefront, where buttons and external links to other purchase methods are allowed (Guideline 3.1.1).

  • GOG.com

GOG's release FAQ asks developers to flag online gambling or elements like loot boxes, adult sexual content, realistic violence, in-game links to external stores and blockchain for team review, and says GOG cannot give feedback on early-stage games, recommending submission when a game is final or already released elsewhere.

  • itch.io

itch.io has no general in-game purchase system; its 'sub-products' API sells add-ons through itch's checkout for redemption on the developer's own site or service.

Technical eligibility

  • GOG.com

GOG asks for the release build ideally at least 3-5 days before launch; offline installers are generated automatically from the Master branch (from the QA release candidate for day-one).

  • GOG.com

GOG requires games to be DRM-free and playable offline without the GOG GALAXY client, and single-player must work without any game client (including Steam).

  • GOG.com

GOG builds shouldn't contain any mentions or links to other stores.

  • itch.io

Desktop games installed through the itch app need an app manifest if they require redistributables (Visual C++, DirectX, XNA), have multiple launch targets or use the itch.io API; simple single-executable builds work without one.

03 · YOUR FIRST MONTH

A 30-day campaign that costs $0

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Make the Mac build verifiable

    • Audit the Steam page: macOS ticked only for a shipping, notarized 64-bit build; Mac system requirements naming supported chips and whether it runs natively or through Rosetta
    • Draft a Mac section for the website: supported Macs, which stores sell it, controller support and known issues
    • Write the release notes and Steam update event announcing the Mac version
    • Check whether AppleGamingWiki already has an entry, and correct or create it with accurate native or Rosetta status
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

Seed Mac gaming communities and press

    • Post a developer thread on r/macgaming with real performance notes per chip and an offer to answer questions (follow the sub's rules)
    • Pitch Mac Gamer HQ and Mac-focused writers through their contact pages with a review key, a press kit and chip test results
    • Send keys to a short, hand-picked list of creators who benchmark games on Apple silicon
    • Publish the Steam update event announcing the Mac port to followers and wishlisters
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Extra storefronts and search

    • Upload the Mac build to itch.io and, if accepted, GOG, with macOS correctly flagged
    • If shipping on the Mac App Store: build the sandboxed version separately from the Steam build and file a Featuring Nomination in App Store Connect
    • Publish a 'Does [game] run on Mac?' page and a '[genre] games that run natively on Apple silicon' article that answers the question honestly, not as a sales page
    • Add Game Center achievements or leaderboards if it is the App Store build
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

Measure and plan the next round

    • Compare Mac wishlists and sales with the period before the port, from Steamworks reports
    • Answer every Mac bug report in public and update the compatibility wiki entry when fixes ship
    • Note which threads, articles and creators brought clicks; add the best ones to the Steam page as quotes or curator reviews
    • Line up the next Mac moment: a seasonal sale, the next Next Fest, or Mac hardware launch coverage

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Ticking macOS before the build is ready

Steam says to select macOS only when you're ready to release, and new macOS builds must be 64-bit and notarized. A broken or un-notarized Mac build leads to refunds and bad reviews from the audience you're trying to win.

  2. System requirements that just say 'Mac'

Mac players buy by chip and by whether a game runs natively. Name the supported chips, say native or Rosetta, give minimum RAM and say whether controllers work. Vague requirements send buyers to a wiki or forum to find out, and some never come back.

  3. Shipping the port silently

A Mac version is news to Mac players, Mac press and compatibility wikis. Adding the build without an update event, a community post and a press note wastes your best chance to reach Mac players.

  4. Reading Steam's OS share as demand

Steam's hardware survey puts macOS at a low single-digit share (1.92% in September 2026). That's a reason to keep Mac marketing focused and cheap, not to skip it. Mac players actively look for games that run, and the communities that serve them are small enough for you to reach directly.

  5. One build for Steam and the Mac App Store

Steam doesn't support the App Sandbox entitlement, and the Mac App Store requires it. Plan two builds, and keep Steam wishlisters and App Store buyers separate in your expectations and analytics.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Rewrites your Steam page copy for Mac-specific gaps (macOS flag, chip-level system requirements, native or Rosetta claims, controller notes), for you to paste in.

  • Plans the Mac port as its own launch: Steam update event, community posts, Mac press pitches and creator keys, each prepared for you to post or send.

  • Writes and publishes compatibility-first pages ('Does [game] run on Mac?', native Apple silicon roundups) built for the searches Mac players run, and tracks them over the months it takes search to compound.

  • Prepares Mac-relevant listings (itch.io, GOG, compatibility wikis) for you to submit and tracks each one, and keeps Apple's featuring lead time on your calendar if you ship on the Mac App Store.

  • Tracks whether AI assistants answer 'what are good native Mac games in [genre]' with your game, and shows the gaps.

  • Works at $0 extra spend: Runway ($49) for a coming-soon page with a waitlist before the port, Growth ($149) for an active Mac launch, Autopilot ($499) for up to three sites in one workspace, each with its own campaign, and daily AI-visibility tracking.

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is a Mac version worth marketing if macOS is a small share of Steam?

Usually yes, if the build is solid. macOS is a low single-digit share in Steam's hardware survey, so don't expect it to match Windows. But Mac players have fewer games to choose from and gather in a few small communities and wikis, so focused, near-free outreach can reach a large part of them. Outpost keeps Mac marketing on that scale and doesn't push paid spend.

Should I sell on Steam, the Mac App Store, or both?

Steam is usually the base for indie games because your Windows audience, wishlists and reviews are there. The Mac App Store reaches Mac owners who don't use Steam and supports Game Center, but it needs the US$99/yr developer program and a sandboxed build that differs from the Steam one. Many studios start on Steam and add the App Store when they have time to maintain two builds.

What do Mac players need to see before they buy?

Proof it runs on their machine: supported chips, native or Rosetta, minimum RAM, controller support and known issues. Put it in your Steam system requirements, on your website and in community compatibility wikis. Honest performance notes build more trust than marketing copy.

Can Outpost get my game featured by Apple?

No one can promise that. Featuring is Apple's editorial decision. Outpost can prepare and time your Featuring Nomination in App Store Connect. Apple asks for at least two weeks' notice and suggests up to three months for wider consideration. Outpost then runs the rest of your campaign so it doesn't depend on Apple.

I already launched on Windows. Can the Mac port still get attention?

Yes. A new platform is a real reason to announce, for Steam followers, Mac press and Mac communities alike. Outpost treats it as a second launch with its own update event, posts and pitches, and doesn't just tick a box.

How fast will search traffic show up?

Slowly. Compatibility pages and Mac roundups usually take months to rank and keep building after that. Community posts, press and the Steam update event bring results in weeks. Search is what keeps people coming after launch.

Do I have to notarize my Mac game?

For Steam, yes. Steam requires new macOS apps to be 64-bit and notarized by Apple, which means joining the Apple Developer Program. Outpost doesn't build or sign your game. It flags the requirement in your launch checklist so you don't announce a build players can't open.

Should I also launch on the Epic Games Store?

Often yes, as a second store once your Steam page is working, if your game meets Epic's rules: Epic Games Store developers keep 100% of the first US$1M net revenue per product per calendar year (resetting each 1 January from 2026, applied automatically), then 88/12. Epic First Run is an opt-in 6-month Epic-exclusive window paying 100% net revenue; it is open only to new games not previously released on another third-party PC store, and afterwards the standard 100%-of-first-US$1M then 88/12 terms apply. Epic lets games use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases, keeping up to 100% of that revenue. Epic requires multiplayer games sold on other PC stores to support crossplay with them, and products added to its publishing tools after 9 March 2023 to enable Epic achievements if they offer achievements on other PC stores. Listing on Epic Games Store is paid. $100 per product plus local taxes; not refundable but recouped after $1,000 on EGS. Developer keeps 100% of the first $1M net revenue per product per year (resets every Jan 1 from 2026), then 88/12, applied automatically to Epic-processed payments. A separate opt-in 'Epic First Run' gives 100% for a 6-month exclusive. Free alternative: itch.io or the Microsoft Store PC path (free) Epic First Run is irreversible for its six months, so Outpost asks you to confirm it before planning it.
