01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Sim and management players find games on Steam itself, through tags, Discovery Queue, Next Fest and themed fests, and through YouTubers and streamers who build, optimize and break systems on camera. Chris Zukowski's case study of Parcel Simulator credits its demo, Steam Next Fest, and creators such as Real Civil Engineer and Let's Game It Out for most of its wishlist growth. Genre fests, including the publisher-run SimFest and Steam's own Shop Keeper Fest, give themed visibility.

The buying journey

A player sees a creator video or a fest listing, wishlists, tries the demo if there is one, and buys at launch or when a wishlist discount email arrives. Sim players often watch long playthroughs before buying, so creator coverage that continues over months matters more than one launch-day spike.

What studios aim for

  • Grow wishlists before launch
  • Get a demo into Steam Next Fest
  • Land coverage from creators who play sims
  • Pick up themed fest visibility
  • Launch with enough wishlists for Steam to feature you

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Playable demo plus Steam Next Fest

    Essential

In the Parcel Simulator case study, wishlists went from roughly 11 a day before the demo to over 362 a day after it, and Next Fest added about 10,000 against a benchmark of about 1,500.

  2. YouTubers and streamers who play sims

    Essential

Creators like Real Civil Engineer and Let's Game It Out drove large parts of Parcel Simulator's wishlists. A short, specific email worked better than a long pitch.

  3. Steam themed fests and genre sales

    High

Shop Keeper Fest, Desktop Companion Fest and similar events give sims that fit the theme visibility in front of players who want that theme.

  4. Steam page, tags and capsule art

    High

Sim players filter by tags like 'Management', 'Automation' and 'Building'. Accurate tags and a trailer that opens on gameplay decide whether a Discovery Queue view becomes a wishlist.

  5. Devlogs and genre communities

    Medium

Showing the systems you're building, such as production chains and satisfying loops, on r/IndieGaming and in a Discord server builds a core audience before launch.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Paid up front (premium)

  • Strong fitSteam

Premium games are Steam's core model: discounts of 20% or more can trigger wishlist emails, discounts run 10-95% (launch discount max 40%) with 30-day cooldowns, and seasonal sales are exempt from the between-discount cooldown.

Free with in-app purchases

  • WorksSteam Next Fest

Free-to-play and Early Access games may enter Steam Next Fest if unreleased, with a public demo, a public store page, and only one Next Fest per title ever.

Free with ads

  • Not allowedSteam

Steam does not accept applications with advertising-based business models, so an ads-funded game must remove ads or monetize differently for its Steam build.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

Technical eligibility

  • Steam

Steam enforces a 30-day waiting period between paying the Steam Direct fee and being able to release, and identity, tax and bank paperwork takes 15-30 days.

  • Steam

Steam games are limited to 100 achievements at first (more once the app reaches the Profile Features threshold), and achievements require Steamworks API integration (ISteamUserStats SetAchievement/StoreStats).

  • Steam

Steam build review requires the product to launch on every operating system listed on the store page and to implement every supported feature listed there; SteamPipe needs at least one launch option.

  • Steam

Steam Cloud only works after the developer sets a per-user byte quota and file count; Valve lists 100MB as the current maximum size for one ISteamRemoteStorage::FileWrite or FileWriteStreamWriteChunk call, and says these limits may change over time.

A sample month. Your own plan is built from your audit, stage and goal, and paid options only ever appear as optional boosts.

  1. Week 1 · days 1–7

    Steam page and festival calendar

    • Make sure the trailer opens on gameplay and the most satisfying loop shows in the first seconds
    • Set accurate sim tags, checking them against competitors players already know
    • Map deadlines: Next Fest February 2027 (register by January 10), Shop Keeper Fest and Desktop Companion Fest if they fit, Tiny Teams if your team is five or fewer
    • Decide when the demo can be playtested and shipped, ideally months before the fest you're targeting
  2. Week 2 · days 8–14

    Creator list

    • Build a list of YouTubers and streamers who played comparable sims in the last six months
    • Create a press kit with IMPRESS or presskit() and set up key requests through Keymailer
    • Write a short, bullet-point creator email: what the loop is, why it's fun to break, and when the demo comes out
    • Send the first batch and log responses
  3. Week 3 · days 15–21

    Community and devlog

    • Post a devlog GIF of the core system on r/IndieGaming, following its rules
    • Open or grow a Discord server for playtesters
    • Collect playtest feedback on the first 10 minutes, since early bounce kills demo conversion
    • Pitch GameDiscoverCo or How To Market A Game only if you have a real data story
  4. Week 4 · days 22–30

    Demo launch prep

    • Finalize the demo build and its Steam page
    • Send the second creator wave timed to the demo release
    • Opt into any themed fest that matches, and never tick paid-placement upsells
    • Review wishlists by source and set the next month's targets

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. No demo, or a demo released too late

The Parcel Simulator case study calls demos 'critically important for visibility for most games' and advises releasing one months before Next Fest, once it has been playtested.

  2. Treating creator outreach as a one-day launch event

Zukowski's case study stresses that many creators covering a game over months drives long-term sales more than a launch spike.

  3. A trailer that opens on logos and lore

Sim players want to see the loop. Steam plays the first trailer as a micro-trailer on hover, so open on gameplay.

  4. Using Next Fest too early

A game may appear in Steam Next Fest only once. Spending it on a rough demo with a thin Steam page wastes your best demo moment.

  5. Ticking paid upsells on 'free' festivals

Some third-party Steam festivals upsell paid placement. The free entry is usually enough. Skip the paid boxes.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Builds your festival calendar from Steam's published dates (Next Fest, Shop Keeper Fest, seasonal sales) with each registration deadline and a 'start preparing by' date

  • Finds YouTube creators who recently played comparable sims and drafts short, specific outreach emails for you to send, with a receipt for each send you mark

  • Prepares press-service entries and pitch text so creators can get keys without back-and-forth

  • Prepares devlog updates for communities like r/IndieGaming within their rules, for you to post

  • Publishes guides and 'games like' pages on your site that keep earning search traffic after launch

  • Lines the wishlists you share by source up against tracked clicks, so you can see which creators and fests actually moved the needle

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

When should my sim's demo come out?

Zukowski's advice in the Parcel Simulator case study is months before your target Next Fest, once it's been playtested. That developer launched the demo just before Next Fest, which the article calls risky.

Which Steam fests fit simulation games?

It depends on your theme. For early 2027, Shop Keeper Fest (January 25 to February 1) covers store-management games and Desktop Companion Fest (January 14-18) covers idle desktop games. Next Fest suits nearly any sim with a demo.

How do I get sim YouTubers to play my game?

Target creators who recently played similar games, send a short email that explains the loop and why it's fun to break, and make keys easy to get. Expect most coverage to come over months, not on one day.

Is SimFest a Steam event?

SimFest is a sim-genre sale run by publishers (Mythwright, Stray Fawn Studio and Future Friends Games). It ran on Steam in July 2026 for its fifth year. It's separate from Valve's own themed fests.

How long until wishlists grow?

Without a demo or festival, wishlist growth is often slow. It speeds up around demo releases, fests and creator coverage. Plan in quarters, not weeks.

Does Outpost need an ad budget for this?

No. Steam fests, creator outreach and press kits are free or freemium, and every plan works at $0 extra spend.

Should I also launch on the Epic Games Store?

Often yes, as a second store once your Steam page is working, if your game meets Epic's rules: Epic Games Store developers keep 100% of the first US$1M net revenue per product per calendar year (resetting each 1 January from 2026, applied automatically), then 88/12. Epic First Run is an opt-in 6-month Epic-exclusive window paying 100% net revenue; it is open only to new games not previously released on another third-party PC store, and afterwards the standard 100%-of-first-US$1M then 88/12 terms apply. Epic lets games use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases, keeping up to 100% of that revenue. Epic requires multiplayer games sold on other PC stores to support crossplay with them, and products added to its publishing tools after 9 March 2023 to enable Epic achievements if they offer achievements on other PC stores. Listing on Epic Games Store is paid. $100 per product plus local taxes; not refundable but recouped after $1,000 on EGS. Developer keeps 100% of the first $1M net revenue per product per year (resets every Jan 1 from 2026), then 88/12, applied automatically to Epic-processed payments. A separate opt-in 'Epic First Run' gives 100% for a 6-month exclusive. Free alternative: itch.io or the Microsoft Store PC path (free) Epic First Run is irreversible for its six months, so Outpost asks you to confirm it before planning it.
