Strategy players buy what they've already played for hours

Strategy audiences are deep, vocal and driven by demos. Outpost builds the long wishlist runway: Coming Soon page, Playtest, Steam fests, curators, and the subgenre communities where 4X, RTS and tactics players argue about mechanics.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Strategy players find games on Steam through tags, genre fests, Next Fest demos and recommendations. They also watch strategy-focused YouTubers and streamers who play long sessions, and argue mechanics in subgenre communities for 4X, RTS, turn-based tactics and base-building. They read devlogs and patch notes, and care about AI quality, depth, replayability and mod support more than trailers.

The buying journey

Wishlist from a store page or a video, play a demo or Playtest (often for hours), follow updates, then buy at launch or at a discount. Steam emails wishlisters when the game releases and when it's discounted by 20% or more, so the wishlist really is the funnel.

What studios aim for

  • Build wishlists steadily from Coming Soon page to launch
  • Use Steam Next Fest at the right moment (each game gets one)
  • Get feedback on AI and balance through Playtest before launch
  • Get covered by strategy creators and curators
  • Build a community that sticks around for patches and DLC

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Steam store page and wishlists

    Essential

Everything feeds the store page. A Coming Soon page must be public for at least two weeks before release, and you can't release until 21 days after paying the $100 app fee. Strategy pages should show systems (maps, tech trees, battles), not cinematics.

  2. Demo, Playtest and Steam Next Fest

    Essential

Strategy players decide by playing. Steam Playtest is free and gathers sign-ups from your store page. Next Fest needs a public demo, a release date after the fest, and is once per game. For February 2027, registration closes January 10.

  3. Steam genre fests

    High

The Real-Time Strategy Fest (May 10-17, 2027) is the strategy-themed event on Steam's published calendar. Themed fests favor discounted games, but Coming Soon and demo titles can take part.

  4. Subgenre communities and devlogs

    High

4X, RTS, turn-based and base-building communities reward developers who explain design decisions. Regular devlogs about AI, balance and systems build the core audience that seeds reviews.

  5. Strategy creators and Steam curators

    High

Long-form strategy creators show depth in a way trailers can't. Steam Curator Connect lets you send keys to up to 100 curators, five copies each, with a personal pitch to each.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Paid up front (premium)

  • Strong fitSteam Curator Connect

Steam Curator Connect sends up to 5 copies to each of up to 100 curators as licences, which is a lever for paid games; how it applies to free-to-play titles was not verified.

  • Strong fitSteam

Premium games are Steam's core model: discounts of 20% or more can trigger wishlist emails, discounts run 10-95% (launch discount max 40%) with 30-day cooldowns, and seasonal sales are exempt from the between-discount cooldown.

  • Strong fitSteam themed fests and sales

Steam's four seasonal sales are discount events that all games are invited to join with a discount, so they reward priced games; free-to-play titles have no base price to discount and are generally excluded from curated deal spotlights.

Free with in-app purchases

  • WorksSteam Next Fest

Free-to-play and Early Access games may enter Steam Next Fest if unreleased, with a public demo, a public store page, and only one Next Fest per title ever.

Free with ads

  • Not allowedSteam

Steam does not accept applications with advertising-based business models, so an ads-funded game must remove ads or monetize differently for its Steam build.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • GOG.com

GOG's release FAQ asks developers to flag online gambling or elements like loot boxes, adult sexual content, realistic violence, in-game links to external stores and blockchain for team review, and says GOG cannot give feedback on early-stage games, recommending submission when a game is final or already released elsewhere.

  • Steam

Steam does not accept blockchain games that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs.

  • Steam

Free-to-play games on Steam are generally not eligible for curated discount spotlights (Daily Deals, Midweek and Weekend deals), and in-game content discounts are run from the developer's own backend.

  • Steam

Steamworks' onboarding rules, microtransaction, free-to-play and Inventory docs set no specific odds-disclosure rule for paid random items, so Steam loot boxes are governed by regional law, rating boards and the Steam Inventory drop system.

Technical eligibility

  • GOG.com

GOG asks for the release build ideally at least 3-5 days before launch; offline installers are generated automatically from the Master branch (from the QA release candidate for day-one).

  • GOG.com

GOG requires games to be DRM-free and playable offline without the GOG GALAXY client, and single-player must work without any game client (including Steam).

  • GOG.com

GOG builds shouldn't contain any mentions or links to other stores.

  • Steam

Steam enforces a 30-day waiting period between paying the Steam Direct fee and being able to release, and identity, tax and bank paperwork takes 15-30 days.

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Spending Next Fest too early

Steam allows a game in Next Fest only once, and it needs a public demo and a release date after the fest. Entering with a thin demo and a tiny wishlist wastes your best free visibility event.

  2. A cinematic trailer for a systems game

Strategy players want to see the map, the tech tree and a battle resolving. Lead with gameplay and the decision the player makes.

  3. Launching without testing the AI

Weak AI or balance problems become the review headline. Use Steam Playtest to find them while you can still fix them.

  4. Forgetting Steam's lead times

There's a 21-day wait after paying the app fee, a Coming Soon page must be public for at least two weeks, and store and build reviews take 1-5 days each. Late scheduling pushes launch dates.

  5. Screenshot drops in subgenre communities

4X and RTS communities respond to design discussion and devlogs, not bare promo images. Explain a decision and invite critique.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Builds your fest calendar from Steam's official schedule, with deadlines such as the January 10 registration for February 2027 Next Fest.

  • Audits your store page, tags, capsule and trailer opening against what strategy players look for.

  • Drafts devlogs and subgenre community posts for you to post and logs each one with a receipt.

  • Finds YouTube creators who cover strategy games, drafts personal pitches for them and for the curators you add, and tracks every key you mark sent.

  • Tracks wishlist sources through tracked links, and whether AI assistants mention you for prompts like 'best new 4X games'.

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

When should we do Steam Next Fest?

When your demo is strong and your page already has momentum, because each game gets one Next Fest. If you're not ready for February 22 - March 1, 2027 (registration closes January 10), June 14-21, 2027 is the next option.

Is the Real-Time Strategy Fest worth it for a turn-based game?

Steam describes it as games played in real time with high levels of strategic play, so it fits RTS and real-time tactics. Turn-based games should look for other themed fests or seasonal sales instead of forcing it.

Do strategy games really need a demo?

Usually, yes. Strategy players commit to long games and want to test depth and AI first. A demo or Playtest also gives you balance feedback while you can still act on it.

How many curators should we contact?

Curator Connect allows up to 100 curators with up to five copies each. Fewer, well-matched strategy curators with a personal note beat a blast to everyone.

How long before launch should we start marketing?

As early as you have a store page that represents the game. Wishlists build over months, and Steam emails every wishlister at launch. The Coming Soon page must be public for at least two weeks before release, but that's the minimum, not the target.

Does Outpost buy ads or keys?

No. Every plan works at $0 extra spend. Outpost plans and drafts the free channels: Steam events, Playtest, curators, creators and communities. It records each action so you can see exactly what was done.

Should I also launch on the Epic Games Store?

Often yes, as a second store once your Steam page is working, if your game meets Epic's rules: Epic Games Store developers keep 100% of the first US$1M net revenue per product per calendar year (resetting each 1 January from 2026, applied automatically), then 88/12. Epic First Run is an opt-in 6-month Epic-exclusive window paying 100% net revenue; it is open only to new games not previously released on another third-party PC store, and afterwards the standard 100%-of-first-US$1M then 88/12 terms apply. Epic lets games use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases, keeping up to 100% of that revenue. Epic requires multiplayer games sold on other PC stores to support crossplay with them, and products added to its publishing tools after 9 March 2023 to enable Epic achievements if they offer achievements on other PC stores. Listing on Epic Games Store is paid. $100 per product plus local taxes; not refundable but recouped after $1,000 on EGS. Developer keeps 100% of the first $1M net revenue per product per year (resets every Jan 1 from 2026), then 88/12, applied automatically to Epic-processed payments. A separate opt-in 'Epic First Run' gives 100% for a 6-month exclusive. Free alternative: itch.io or the Microsoft Store PC path (free) Epic First Run is irreversible for its six months, so Outpost asks you to confirm it before planning it.
