01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

Deckbuilder players discover games on Steam through genre tags, Steam's themed Deckbuilders Fest (the 2026 edition ran May 4-11) and Next Fest demos, and through streamers and YouTubers who play long runs on camera. Genre giants set expectations: Balatro passed five million copies by January 2025 and Slay the Spire 2 entered Early Access on March 5, 2026, so players constantly ask 'what is like X but different'. Genre subreddits and Discord servers spread demos that have a clear twist.

The buying journey

See a GIF or a streamer run that shows a satisfying combo, open the Steam page, play the demo for a run or two, and wishlist if the twist feels fresh. The purchase often waits for launch week or a fest discount. Players compare the core loop directly with the games they already sank hours into.

What studios aim for

  • Build a Steam page whose first screenshot and trailer seconds show a combo
  • Get a polished demo into Next Fest and the Deckbuilders Fest
  • Get the demo played by creators who stream the genre
  • Grow wishlists steadily ahead of launch

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Steam page, demo and fests

    Essential

The demo is the pitch in this genre. Next Fest needs a public demo and a store page, a game can appear only once in Next Fest, and themed fests like Deckbuilders Fest are opt-in. Time them deliberately.

  2. Streamers and YouTubers who play the genre

    High

Runs are naturally streamable, and genre creators have audiences that buy deckbuilders. Steam Curator Connect and Keymailer let you send keys; a personal note about why your twist suits their style matters more than volume.

  3. GIF-first social and Reddit

    Medium

A five-second clip of a ridiculous combo travels on Reddit, Bluesky and X. Post in genre and indie subreddits that allow it, following each one's self-promotion rules.

  4. Discord community and playtests

    Medium

Deckbuilder players love theorycrafting. A Discord for balance feedback plus Steam Playtest turns early players into advocates and surfaces broken cards before launch.

  5. Press and curators

    Supporting

Smaller outlets and Steam curators cover genre releases; a press kit and IGDB entry make coverage easy. Big outlets follow buzz rather than create it.

BUSINESS MODEL · LIVE

How you make money changes the plan

The same channel can be a strong fit for a paid game and a poor one for a free one. Each line below is a rule or rating from Outpost's knowledge base, with its source; your own plan is built from your answers.

Paid up front (premium)

  • Strong fitSteam Curator Connect

Steam Curator Connect sends up to 5 copies to each of up to 100 curators as licences, which is a lever for paid games; how it applies to free-to-play titles was not verified.

  • Poor fititch.io

HTML5 (browser-played) games on itch.io can only take donations; to sell access the project must be set to Downloadable.

  • Strong fititch.io

itch.io offers three pricing modes per project: no payments, $0-or-donate (a suggested donation that can be skipped), and paid with the set price as a minimum that buyers may exceed.

Free with in-app purchases

  • WorksSteam Next Fest

Free-to-play and Early Access games may enter Steam Next Fest if unreleased, with a public demo, a public store page, and only one Next Fest per title ever.

Free with ads

  • Poor fititch.io

itch.io's quality guidelines tell creators to avoid sponsored installers and ads that block play until the player acts, and itch never puts ads on creator pages.

  • Not allowedSteam

Steam does not accept applications with advertising-based business models, so an ads-funded game must remove ads or monetize differently for its Steam build.

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

Technical eligibility

  • itch.io

Desktop games installed through the itch app need an app manifest if they require redistributables (Visual C++, DirectX, XNA), have multiple launch targets or use the itch.io API; simple single-executable builds work without one.

  • itch.io

itch.io's butler docs say the backend rejects builds above 30GB total uncompressed size; the itch app docs say 'the web limit is 2GB'; a 2020 community thread showed a 1 GB web-upload message, now likely out of date.

  • itch.io

itch.io tags butler uploads by channel name: names containing win/windows, linux, mac/osx or android become Windows, Linux, Mac or Android downloads; architecture cannot be tagged.

  • itch.io

itch.io HTML5 zips should not contain more than 1,000 files after extraction (a default limit; itch.io says to contact them if it doesn't suit the project).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. Pitching only as 'Slay the Spire but...'

Comparison gets the click, but it also invites direct comparison with years of polish. Lead with your twist and let players make the comparison themselves.

  2. Static card screenshots

A card hand on a table does not sell a deckbuilder. Show a turn resolving, numbers climbing, a synergy clicking. Movement and consequence are the hook.

  3. Skipping or under-scoping the demo

Players judge this genre by playing a run. A demo that ends before the first interesting choice wastes the Next Fest slot, which a game can only use once.

  4. Ignoring the release calendar

Launching the same week as a major genre release splits creator and player attention. Check the calendar and Steam fest dates before locking a date.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Rewrites your Steam page copy, tags and screenshot order around what deckbuilder players scan for

  • Tracks Next Fest and themed-fest deadlines with a 'start preparing by' date, drafts the applications and keeps the receipt once you apply

  • Finds genre YouTube creators and drafts personal key offers for you to send through Curator Connect or Keymailer

  • Drafts IGDB and press kit text so creators and press can cover you easily

  • Writes devlogs and 'games like X' articles that point to your demo and logs every post

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is the deckbuilder market too crowded?

It is competitive, and players compare everything to the giants. That is also why a clear twist travels so well: the audience is large and actively looking for 'like X but different'.

Should we do Next Fest or Deckbuilders Fest first?

They do different jobs. Next Fest is a once-per-game demo showcase, so use it when the demo is polished. Themed fests like Deckbuilders Fest are opt-in genre events and can come earlier or later.

How do we get streamers to play it?

Pick creators who already stream the genre, explain in one line why your twist suits them, and send a key with no strings. Curator Connect and Keymailer handle delivery.

Does this cover physical card games?

Outpost v1 focuses on digital games on the web, PC and Mac. Tabletop crowdfunding has different channels, so this page is about digital deckbuilders and card games.

How many wishlists do we need?

There is no magic number, and analysts have noted that wishlists convert less reliably than they used to. Focus on a steady daily trend and on what each fest or creator video moved.

Which plan fits a deckbuilder?

Runway ($49) while the Steam page is Coming Soon; Growth ($149) around fests and launch. All plans work at $0 extra spend.

Should I also launch on the Epic Games Store?

Often yes, as a second store once your Steam page is working, if your game meets Epic's rules: Epic Games Store developers keep 100% of the first US$1M net revenue per product per calendar year (resetting each 1 January from 2026, applied automatically), then 88/12. Epic First Run is an opt-in 6-month Epic-exclusive window paying 100% net revenue; it is open only to new games not previously released on another third-party PC store, and afterwards the standard 100%-of-first-US$1M then 88/12 terms apply. Epic lets games use their own or a third-party payment solution for in-app purchases, keeping up to 100% of that revenue. Epic requires multiplayer games sold on other PC stores to support crossplay with them, and products added to its publishing tools after 9 March 2023 to enable Epic achievements if they offer achievements on other PC stores. Listing on Epic Games Store is paid. $100 per product plus local taxes; not refundable but recouped after $1,000 on EGS. Developer keeps 100% of the first $1M net revenue per product per year (resets every Jan 1 from 2026), then 88/12, applied automatically to Epic-processed payments. A separate opt-in 'Epic First Run' gives 100% for a 6-month exclusive. Free alternative: itch.io or the Microsoft Store PC path (free) Epic First Run is irreversible for its six months, so Outpost asks you to confirm it before planning it.
