AppsJournaling apps playbook

Journaling app marketing that sells the habit and the privacy, not a blank page

Since Apple shipped a free Journal app, a blank page is not enough. People pick the journal that helps them start, keeps their words private and lets them leave. Outpost builds marketing around exactly that.

01 · DISCOVERY

How customers find you

People find journaling apps through store search ('journal app', 'private diary'), prompt and template searches ('journal prompts for anxiety', 'gratitude journal template'), productivity creators on YouTube who show their setups, and comparison searches like 'Day One alternatives'. Apple's own Journal app, launched with iOS 17.2 in December 2023, changed the baseline, and its Journaling Suggestions API lets third-party apps offer the same on-device suggestion picker.

The buying journey

Someone decides to start (or restart) journaling, searches for prompts or an app, tries a free version for a few entries, and pays when sync, templates, media or encryption become important. Before committing years of private writing, careful users check encryption, export and what happens if the company disappears.

What app makers aim for

  • Rank for prompt and template searches that lead to the app
  • Stand out from Apple Journal with a clear, specific reason
  • Make privacy claims specific and verifiable
  • Capture new-year and restart moments

02 · CHANNELS

Channels, ranked by what matters most

Ranked 5 (essential) to 1 (optional) by the research for this industry.

  1. Prompt and template content

    Essential

Prompt searches are frequent and specific, and every good prompt page is a natural lead-in to the app. Hand-written, themed collections beat machine-generated lists, which also risk Google's scaled content abuse policy.

  2. App Store and Google Play optimization

    Essential

Store search drives most installs. Position against the free default with a specific promise (method, privacy, cross-platform, media) rather than 'beautiful journal'.

  3. Apple platform features

    High

Supporting the Journaling Suggestions picker, widgets and reflection notifications makes the app feel native and gives you something concrete for store pages and editorial pitches.

  4. Privacy-forward comparisons

    Medium

'Encrypted journal app' and 'Day One alternatives' searchers care about specifics: end-to-end encryption, local-first storage, export formats. A plain comparison page wins them.

  5. Productivity and journaling creators

    Medium

YouTube creators who show their journaling systems reach people deciding how to journal. A free account and a template they can share work better than scripted ads.

Free with in-app purchases

  • Not allowedSetapp

Setapp does not allow in-app purchases, donations, paid features, advertising, demo or trial versions, or activation and licensing mechanisms inside the Setapp build.

  • Poor fitSetapp

Setapp accepts only mature, well-reputed Mac software that fills category gaps and passes a technical review with the Setapp SDK; any iOS companion must also be on the App Store as a free app with IAP that unlocks everything.

Free with ads

  • WorksApple App Store

Apple rejects apps designed predominantly to display ads, limits display ads to the main app binary, requires interstitials to be labelled as ads with easy close/skip buttons and a way to report inappropriate ads, and bars third-party ads and analytics in Kids Category apps (except limited contextual ads from services that human-review creatives).

  • WorksGoogle Play

Google Play bans unexpected full-screen interstitials, full-screen interstitials that cannot be closed after 15 seconds (opt-in or non-interrupting ones, such as after a score screen, may run longer), ads that mimic app or system UI, and lock-screen monetization (unless the app is a lock screen); rewarded ads the user opts into are exempt.

  • Not allowedSetapp

Setapp does not allow in-app purchases, donations, paid features, advertising, demo or trial versions, or activation and licensing mechanisms inside the Setapp build.

Non-subscription apps on Apple stores may offer a free time-limited trial only through a free (Tier 0) non-consumable IAP named 'XX-day Trial', disclosing its length and later charges before it starts.

  • WorksMac App Store

Mac App Store apps must be sandboxed and self-contained, may not show a license screen, require license keys or use their own copy protection, and must update only through the Mac App Store.

  • Poor fitSetapp

Paid random items (gacha, loot boxes)

  • Apple App Store

  • Apple App StoreSome markets only

Since iOS 26.5 (terms published 18 June 2026), Brazilian iOS apps may use alternative in-app payments or link out to the web: App Store commission is 21% (10% for Small Business Program members and for subscriptions after year one) plus 5% if Apple processes the payment, link-out sales within 7 days carry a 15% (or 10%) store-services commission, and alternative marketplaces carry a 5% Core Technology Commission.

  • Google PlaySome markets only

Google Play user choice billing (an alternative billing system offered alongside Google Play billing, with a 4% service-fee reduction on those transactions) is available in India, and in Indonesia and Brazil under the pilot.

Since Japan's Mobile Software Competition Act took effect in December 2025 (iOS 26.2), iOS apps in Japan can be distributed through Apple-authorised alternative marketplaces and can offer alternative payment processing or web purchase links alongside Apple IAP; App Store commission is 10% or 21% plus 5% for Apple IAP, web-link purchases pay 15% (10% for reduced programs), and apps outside the App Store pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Technical eligibility

  • Apple App Store

Apple moved to a new age-rating system; developers had to answer the updated age-rating questions by 2026-01-31 to avoid an interruption when submitting app updates.

  • Apple App Store

An App Clip's uncompressed, thinned main bundle may be at most 15 MB for iOS 16 and 10 MB below iOS 16; 100 MB is allowed only for iOS 17+, digital-invocation-only clips used where reliable internet is likely.

  • Apple App Store

App privacy details (the 'nutrition label'), including the data practices of third-party SDKs, are required to submit new apps and app updates to the App Store.

  • Apple App Store

App Review requires final builds with working URLs, and demo account details (with the back end switched on) if the app has a login; incomplete bundles and builds that crash are rejected (Guideline 2.1).

06 · AVOID

Common mistakes

  1. 'A beautiful place for your thoughts'

Every journaling app says this, and Apple's free app now covers the basics. Lead with a specific reason: a method, cross-platform sync, encryption, media, or templates.

  2. Vague privacy claims

'Secure' and 'private' mean little. Say whether entries are end-to-end encrypted, stored locally or on your servers, and whether staff can read them.

  3. AI-generated prompt farms

Thousands of auto-generated prompt pages are thin content and fit Google's scaled content abuse description. Fewer, thoughtful collections rank and convert better.

  4. No way out

People are trusting you with years of writing. Without a clean export, cautious users will not start, and reviewers will mention it.

07 · WHAT OUTPOST DOES

How Outpost helps

  • Writes themed prompt-collection articles that link to your app

  • Drafts a page on how entries are stored, encrypted and exported, from the facts you confirm

  • Rewrites store listings around a specific reason to choose you over the default app, for you to paste in

  • Writes new-year and fresh-start articles, which you place on the Calendar early enough to be indexed in time

  • Logs every submission, pitch and post with a receipt and reports article and store-page click trends

Every action Outpost takes gets a receipt: the live URL, a timestamp and what it drove, or “nothing yet”.See how receipts work

08 · QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can a journaling app compete with Apple Journal?

Yes, with a specific reason to switch: cross-platform sync, a guided method, richer templates, encryption you can verify, or Android and web support. Apple's app sets the baseline; it is not the ceiling.

Should we support the Journaling Suggestions API?

If you are on iOS, it is worth considering. It lets your app show the same on-device suggestion picker as Apple Journal, and Apple added reflection notifications and more suggestion types in 2025.

Is prompt content just SEO bait?

Not if it helps. A thoughtful prompt collection is useful on its own and leads naturally to the app. Mass-generated prompt lists are the bait kind, and they tend not to last.

How should we talk about privacy?

Specifically. Explain encryption (end-to-end or at rest), where data lives, what staff can access and how export works. Specific claims are more persuasive and easier to defend.

When is the best time to launch?

Fresh-start moments, especially the new year, bring people back to journaling. Publish prompt content weeks ahead so it is indexed in time.

Which plan fits?

Growth ($149) for most journaling apps; Runway ($49) before launch. All plans work at $0 extra spend.
